Before buying electronics online, verify the exact product and condition, identify the actual seller, read reviews critically, calculate the delivered cost, understand return and warranty terms, and check safety and payment protections. A low price or high star rating alone cannot establish that a listing is the right fit or that a seller is reliable.
1. Confirm the exact product, model, and condition
Start with what you need the device to do, then check that the listing matches those requirements. Verify the model number and essential specifications—not just the product name or a similar-looking photo. Compare the seller’s description with the manufacturer’s information if a detail such as capacity, compatibility, or included accessories matters. The Federal Trade Commission recommends identifying must-have features and comparing products before buying (FTC online-shopping guidance).
Read the condition description carefully. Terms such as “refurbished,” “used,” “as is,” and “close-out” signal that the item may not be new or in top condition; they do not, by themselves, prove it is defective. Check what is included, whether any damage or missing parts are disclosed, and what condition-related limits apply to returns or warranty service. Marketplace guidance also recommends reading the description and inspecting listing photos (FTC advice on buying from an online marketplace).
2. Find out who is actually selling it
On a marketplace, the platform may host the listing while a separate business or individual sells and ships the item. Look for the seller name on the product page and checkout screen, then check its contact information, history, and recent buyer comments. Search the seller or site name alongside terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam,” and look across more than one source.

Do not treat marketplace presence as a guarantee of seller quality. In the United States, the INFORM Consumers Act requires covered marketplaces to collect and disclose certain information for high-volume third-party sellers, subject to the law’s coverage limits. It is not a certification of every seller or listing (FTC overview of the INFORM Consumers Act).
3. Read reviews for evidence, not just a score
Look beyond the average star rating. Read several customer reviews, note when they were posted, and check whether they discuss the exact model and condition you are considering. A reviewer’s history and the context of the review can help you judge how much weight to give it.

Ratings and reviews can be fake or misleading, whether they are positive or negative, so a high score is not proof that a product or seller is dependable. Compare customer experiences with independent expert coverage when it is available. The FTC discusses review risks in its online-shopping advice and marketplace guidance.

Compare the amount you will actually pay, not just the headline price. Add disclosed shipping charges, fees, and optional extras you intend to buy. Check the stated delivery date and save a copy of the seller’s promise, such as the confirmation page or order email.

For U.S. shoppers, the FTC’s Online Shopping guidance says: “The law requires sellers to ship items within 30 days of the sale.” It also explains that if a seller cannot ship on time, it must provide the required opportunity for a remedy. The rule and remedies are U.S.-specific; the applicable requirements elsewhere depend on local law and the circumstances (FTC online-shopping guidance).
A very low price for an expensive branded item can be a warning sign of a counterfeit or stolen product, but price alone does not prove either. Factor in the seller’s identity, the listing details, and the terms before deciding that a deal is worthwhile.

5. Check returns, warranty, and service before checkout
Find the return deadline and determine whether you can get a refund or only an exchange or credit. Check who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies, and how soon you must open a marketplace claim. These terms can differ by seller, item, platform, and jurisdiction; do not assume a marketplace protection covers every purchase or dispute.

Read the manufacturer’s warranty for the exact product and find out who will handle service: the manufacturer, seller, or another provider. Confirm what the warranty covers and any conditions that could affect a claim. Under U.S. federal rules, written warranty terms covered by the law must be available before purchase (FTC Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law). Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office also advises shoppers to check warranty, support, and return or exchange policies (Singapore CPSO guidance on shopping for safe products online).

6. Check safety, payment security, and your records
Verify safety for the destination market
Search for recalls or safety notices for the product and check which rules apply where you will use it. Safety marks are not universal: Singapore’s CPSO says relevant general household electrical, electronic, and gas appliances sold under its rules must carry a valid SAFETY Mark. UK guidance says products covered by applicable marking rules should carry the appropriate mark and the manufacturer’s name and address. These are examples for their respective markets, not a checklist to apply worldwide (Singapore CPSO; UK government consumer product-safety guidance).
Use a safer way to pay and keep proof
Check out through a payment method that offers a dispute process, such as a credit card or a protected online payment service. HTTPS encrypts information sent between your browser and a site, but it does not prove that the seller is honest. As the FTC puts it in its marketplace advice: “The ‘s’ means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site.”
Keep the product description, seller details, receipt, order confirmation, delivery promise, and messages. These records can help if the item differs from the listing, arrives late, or you need to ask for a return or warranty service (FTC marketplace advice; FTC online-shopping guidance).
