For business and social media under $350, a Chromebook is the practical starting point if your work runs in a browser: email, documents, web apps, video calls, and social platforms. If you depend on a particular Windows desktop program, confirm it runs on the laptop’s operating system before buying; the available listings do not establish one Windows model as the best choice for every workload.

One candidate at the budget ceiling is the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (CB514-6H/T). Engadget’s 2026 guide lists a configuration with 8GB of memory, 512GB of storage, and a 14-inch 1920 × 1200 display at $350. Treat that as a guide-reported price, not a guaranteed current offer: check the exact model, seller, stock, and return terms.

What business and social media work can this budget handle?

At this price, think general productivity rather than a laptop for every professional workload. Email, social media in a browser, streaming, documents, and other web-based tasks are the most defensible fit for a Chromebook. Google describes Chromebooks as devices for browser and app-based use, while TechRadar and RTINGS frame low-cost laptops primarily around general productivity and media consumption. Google’s Chromebook overview, TechRadar’s budget-laptop guide, and RTINGS’ under-$300 guide provide that broad context.

“Business” can mean very different things. Before choosing, list the applications and tasks you actually need: browser-based office tools, a specific desktop accounting or design program, frequent video calls, or editing large social-media videos do not impose the same requirements. The cited results do not verify compatibility or performance for any particular business app, social platform, or editing workflow, so check the software maker’s operating-system and hardware requirements.

Which operating system should you choose?

Choose a Chromebook for browser-first work

ChromeOS can be a sensible match when your work is mainly in a browser and your necessary tools support ChromeOS or have suitable web versions. It can cover everyday email, documents, browsing, and social-media management without requiring Windows. Confirm that any essential app, peripheral, or workflow works as needed before purchase; the search results do not test specific software.

Choose Windows only when a required program calls for it

A Windows laptop is the better direction if a required desktop application does not support ChromeOS. But a Windows logo alone does not guarantee a good fit: verify the precise processor, memory, storage, and app requirements on the exact configuration. Retailer search pages show budget listings, not a verified best Windows model or a confirmed offer for a particular laptop. See Best Buy’s under-$350 search and HP’s US store results filtered by price as places to inspect current configurations.

A named option at the $350 ceiling

Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (CB514-6H/T)

Engadget’s 2026 Chromebook guide reports a CB514-6H/T configuration with 8GB of memory, 512GB of storage, a 14-inch 1920 × 1200 display, and a weight of 3.09 lb at a listed price of $350. The same review listing reports 8 hours “as tested” for battery life. That figure is a review result, not a runtime guarantee; actual battery life varies with workload and conditions. The price, specifications, and test result are specific to the reported listing and should not be generalized to every configuration in the Chromebook Plus 514 family. Compare configurations, not just laptop names

Two machines with similar names or prices can differ substantially in memory and local storage. For example, Engadget reports 8GB memory and 512GB storage for its Acer configuration, while HP’s budget-filtered US store results include an entry Chromebook configuration with 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC. HP’s example is not representative of every HP laptop, and the retailer results do not establish a current offer for the Acer. Compare the exact SKU shown on the seller’s product page.

Storage type and capacity matter if you keep files locally; cloud storage may reduce how much space you need on the laptop, but it does not replace every offline or local-storage use. Memory affects how comfortable it is to keep multiple tabs and apps open. TechRadar warns that 4GB memory can constrain multitasking on a low-cost laptop, so consider whether your typical workload involves many browser tabs, calls, and documents at once.

Check these details before paying

  1. Confirm app and operating-system fit. Write down the must-have programs and verify their ChromeOS or Windows support with the software provider. Check requirements for any video-call tool, external device, or editing app you depend on.
  2. Read the full configuration. Confirm memory, storage capacity and type, display size and resolution, and the exact model or SKU. Do not assume specifications from one review apply to every configuration with the same product-family name.
  3. Check the live transaction. Verify current price, stock, seller, and return terms on the actual product page. The Acer’s $350 figure is from Engadget’s 2026 guide, while retailer search results can change and do not guarantee a particular listing.
  4. Match the screen and portability to your routine. A 14-inch 1920 × 1200 display and 3.09 lb weight are reported for the cited Acer configuration only. Decide whether the screen space and carrying weight suit your commute, desk setup, and typical work sessions.

What to expect from laptops below $350

At the lower end of the budget, prioritize a machine that meets your actual application needs and has enough memory for your routine. RTINGS characterizes the sub-$300 segment as mainly suitable for general productivity and media consumption, and TechRadar flags 4GB memory as a multitasking limitation on low-cost models. These are broad budget cautions, not results for every laptop under $350; check the exact device rather than assuming all low-cost systems perform alike.
