What Burry reportedly changed
The October 11 community repost attributes this statement to Burry: “I have purchased several series of preferred, and sold out of my Freddie and Fannie common stock”. Because the original post was not located, the quote and the reported position change have not been authenticated against a primary source. The repost does not identify the preferred series, purchase prices, or the size of the positions.
The reported shift is from common shares to preferred shares in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It does not, on its own, establish that Burry exited every related investment or reveal his full portfolio.

Why Treasury’s position could affect common shares
Senior preferred stock and liquidation preference
Under the Senior Preferred Stock Purchase Agreements, Treasury holds senior preferred stock with a liquidation preference. In a liquidation or other event governed by the capital structure, preferred stock has priority over common stock for the rights established by its terms. The preference is therefore relevant to what may remain for common shareholders, though it does not by itself determine a company’s eventual value or the outcome of any future restructuring.

Fannie Mae reported an aggregate senior preferred stock liquidation preference of $234.2 billion as of June 30, 2026. That figure is for Fannie Mae only, not a combined total for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Fannie also reported that no dividends were payable to Treasury for the second or third quarter of 2026 under the senior preferred terms. Treasury warrants and possible dilution
The Federal Housing Finance Agency says the agreements give Treasury warrants representing 79.9% of each Enterprise’s common stock on a diluted basis. If exercised, warrants could increase the number of common shares and reduce existing common holders’ proportional ownership. FHFA’s description appears on its Senior Preferred Stock Purchase Agreements page, last updated October 17, 2022.

Warrant exercise is not established as a completed event or a decided policy outcome. The 79.9% figure describes the warrants’ stated share on a diluted basis; it should not be read as proof that Treasury has exercised them or that a specific future share count is certain.

In a July 12, 2026 analysis, Burry wrote that the liquidation preference grows largely in line with the Enterprises’ retained earnings. He also said, “I assume exercise of the warrants and ensuing dilution.” That is Burry’s stated assumption in his analysis, not confirmation that warrant exercise will occur. His discussion connects the senior preferred structure and potential dilution to the distinction between common and preferred shares.

The underlying agreements and their policy context matter too. In September 2020, Treasury and FHFA said an amendment to the agreements was intended to move Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac toward capitalization levels consistent with their size, risk, and importance to the U.S. economy. That statement describes the amendment’s intent, not the ultimate treatment of Treasury’s senior preferred stock. See the Treasury and FHFA announcement of September 14, 2020.
Why the reported move does not prove preferred stock is safer
“Preferred stock” covers securities with specific terms, and those terms matter. The available information does not identify which preferred series Burry reportedly bought, so it cannot establish their dividend rights, seniority relative to other preferred shares, conversion provisions, or valuation. Nor does it show how those securities would fare under different policy outcomes.

Common and preferred securities can respond differently to a change in Treasury’s senior preferred treatment, but neither category has a guaranteed outcome. Assessing an individual preferred series requires its governing terms; the general fact that it is preferred does not establish that it is protected from losses or more attractive than common stock.
