Burn With Me launched on Steam on October 12, 2026. Developed by Nozomu Games and published by Inner Pocket, it is a single-player, story-driven deckbuilder built around a dangerous rule: as rituals become harder and force more draws, a random card in your hand can be permanently burned—including cards you have only just added.
What is Burn With Me?
Burn With Me combines occult mystery, character-focused storytelling and tactical deck construction. Steam describes it as a “story-centric deckbuilder filled with cozy dread and occultic mysteries.” You play through an occult university story in which students discover ancient rites and invocations with help from a passionate Teacher. Each character confronts personal trials, summons personal demons and advances through chapters whose mechanics reflect their fears and obsessions.
The game is single-player and currently available on Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux through Steam. The full release contains six chapters and six characters, with almost 100 cards. Cards also have alternative secret visuals created by invited artists, giving the collection an art-discovery layer beyond their battle functions.
How the draw-and-burn mechanic works
Most deckbuilders reward drawing more cards: a larger hand gives you more options and helps assemble combinations. Burn With Me turns that expectation into a risk calculation.

- Rituals add cards. As you progress, rituals expand the cards available to your deck and hand.
- Difficulty increases the pressure to draw. Harder rituals require more frequent draws, so seeing more cards is not automatically beneficial.
- A draw can permanently burn a card. Launch coverage describes a random card in your hand being removed forever when the burn condition triggers.
- New cards are not protected. A card added moments earlier can be selected and sacrificed, so every reward also introduces a possible future loss.
Because burning is permanent rather than a temporary discard, deck management becomes part of the story’s tension. You must weigh a powerful immediate effect against the possibility that the card—or another key card in your hand—will disappear during a later draw. The Deutscher Computerspielpreis jury characterized the design as a reworking of deckbuilding with “a healthy dose of mathematics,” an apt description of a system that makes hand size, probability and timing central decisions.
Position matters alongside card selection
Burn With Me is not limited to sequencing cards from a hand. Its systems include position-based synergies and creature summoning, so where units or effects are placed can affect how well a combination works. That creates a second tactical layer: a card may be valuable because of its text, its relationship to neighboring positions, or the way it supports a summoned creature.

This layout focus also fits the narrative premise. Each chapter’s mechanics are designed around a character’s fears and obsessions, rather than presenting an unrelated set of repeatable encounters. Expect the game to ask both “Which card should I play?” and “Where should this effect or creature go before the next dangerous draw?”

The campaign follows university students investigating ancient rites and invocations. The Teacher helps guide their studies, while personal demons and trials shape the progression of individual characters. The six-chapter structure gives the game a defined narrative arc instead of presenting only an endless succession of randomized runs.

That distinction matters if you are choosing between a story-first deckbuilder and a roguelike built primarily for repeatable attempts. The available information establishes an authored chapter campaign, but it does not establish that every run, encounter or card pool is procedurally generated in the manner of a traditional roguelike.

The free demo is a useful way to test the draw-and-burn loop before buying. Daniel Mullins, the author of Inscryption, wrote of the demo: “Enjoyed it a lot!” That comment is an endorsement of the demo, not evidence that the two games share the same mechanics or structure.

The defining difference is not simply that cards can be removed. The removal is forced by the pressure to draw, random within your hand and permanent. That combination makes every increase in ritual difficulty a strategic and emotional threat.

If you prefer a deckbuilder where your collection steadily grows and discarded cards are routinely recoverable, the permanent burn rule may feel unusually severe. The demo lets you find out whether that pressure is compelling before committing to the full campaign.
