Burn With Me is a story-centric occult deckbuilder in which every ritual is also a spatial puzzle. You draw cards, place exactly five on a five-point pentagram, and try to push the total blood value above an escalating threshold. Position effects, permanent card burning, growing card values, creature synergies, and a reusable sanity vessel determine whether a powerful hand helps now or damages the deck you need later.
What Burn With Me is
Burn With Me is an occult narrative deckbuilder from Nozomu Games, published by Inner Pocket. The official Steam listing gives it an October 12, 2026 release date, six chapters, and almost 100 cards. Its story follows university students who learn rituals, summon creatures, and confront personal demons. The Steam description calls it “a story-centric deckbuilder filled with cozy dread and occultic mysteries.”
The game is not a conventional deckbuilder in which you simply maximize a numerical attack total. Each encounter asks you to solve a board-position problem under a card limit. A card may be valuable because of its blood score, because of what it does beside another card, or because it can be sacrificed safely. The strongest deck is therefore the one whose conditions you can satisfy consistently, not necessarily the one with the highest printed numbers.

Every ritual uses a five-point pentagram board. Thinky Games’ hands-on account describes a success condition based on filling all five points so the combined score exceeds an escalating threshold, while “playing always and exactly five cards.” That rule changes the way you evaluate a hand: you cannot stop after three excellent cards or add a sixth weak card to rescue the total.

- Read the current threshold. The target rises as encounters progress, so a total that was safe in an earlier ritual may be insufficient later.
- Inspect all available cards. Note each card’s base blood value, placement text, adjacency requirements, and any instruction that can make it burn.
- Choose a five-card arrangement. Decide which card occupies each pentagram point before committing. The order and neighbors matter, not just the five-card sum.
- Resolve placement effects. Effects can check adjacent cards, reward even or odd neighbors, become stronger when isolated, or burn a card when it is played in the wrong sequence.
- Check the final total and aftermath. A successful ritual may still leave you with a thinner deck, a newly added demon card, changed sanity, or a card that has grown in base points.
Because the board has only five positions, every placement is a trade-off. Putting a high-value card in one point may prevent an adjacency bonus elsewhere. Conversely, a lower-value card can be correct if it unlocks two neighboring effects or preserves a valuable card from an automatic burn.
Blood value versus position reliability
Evaluate a build on two separate axes:

For example, an even-neighbor bonus is attractive only when you can reliably place an even-valued neighbor beside it. An isolation bonus may compete with adjacency effects because the same card cannot be both surrounded and isolated. Plan the complete five-card pattern rather than judging each card in isolation.
What burning a card does
Burning is permanent removal. Once a card burns, it leaves the deck and cannot appear in later hands. The official listing presents permanent burning as one of the game’s main mechanics. A burn can save a ritual, remove a liability, or activate a powerful effect, but it also removes future blood, future placement text, and any growth invested in that card.

Treat every burn as an economy decision. The immediate question is whether the burn secures a win or prevents a worse failure; the longer-term question is whether the remaining deck can still produce five workable cards. Burning several weak cards can improve draw quality, but burning too aggressively can leave too few cards or remove the setup pieces that make your best effects function.

When a burn is usually defensible
- The card is required to burn by an effect you deliberately activated and the resulting score clears the threshold.
- The card is a persistent liability whose text repeatedly conflicts with your normal positions or sequence.
- Removing it prevents a future hand from being clogged by a card that contributes little blood and no useful synergy.
- The ritual would otherwise fail and the permanent cost is lower than losing the run’s momentum.
When to preserve the card
- The card supplies a rare adjacency, parity, isolation, creature, or sanity interaction that other cards do not provide.
- Its base points have grown substantially, making the replacement cost high.
- Your deck is already close to the point where it cannot produce a complete five-card hand.
- You are pursuing a no-burn challenge or trying to learn the deck before making irreversible changes.
The achievement Firefighter tracks completing a chapter without burning a card, while Empty-handed records losing too many cards to continue the ritual. Those two outcomes frame the mechanic’s risk: avoiding all burns is a meaningful constraint, but uncontrolled burning can end the ritual entirely.
Deck growth, demons, and creature synergies
Cards can grow in base points. The achievement They grow fast requires growing one card to 50 base points, confirming that improvement is not limited to acquiring new cards. A card that begins as a setup piece can become a major scoring anchor if you protect it and continue meeting the conditions that increase its value.
Growth creates another burn decision. A low-value card may be safe to sacrifice early, but once its base points have increased, burning it destroys more of your future scoring capacity. Keep track of which cards are gaining value and avoid placing them in patterns that trigger accidental burns.

The official description also presents creature summoning and creature synergies as intended build goals. Creatures are therefore more than decorative story elements: they can determine which cards belong together and which pentagram positions are worth reserving. Build around a repeatable creature pattern rather than adding every creature-related card you encounter. A synergy that requires several specific neighbors can be powerful when assembled and unreliable when drawn piecemeal.

Winning an encounter can also add a demon card that makes the deck less desirable, according to Thinky Games’ account. A reward is not automatically an upgrade. Before accepting a new card, consider whether its blood value, effect, and burn risk improve the five-card patterns you can actually draw. A larger deck can contain more power while also increasing the chance of an awkward hand.
How the sanity vessel works
Sanity is a fillable and spendable vessel, not a one-time meter that only moves downward. The achievement Rollercoaster requires gaining 10 sanity, spending it all, and filling the vessel again in one turn. That requirement confirms a deliberate cycle: generate sanity, spend it for an effect, then refill it before the turn ends.
When assessing a card, ask where it fits in that cycle. A card that generates sanity may be stronger in a deck with reliable spending outlets, while a spending effect is less useful if you cannot refill the vessel. Track the order of effects during the ritual so that you do not spend the resource before a later card needs it or finish with an empty vessel when a refill opportunity was available.
The available documentation does not establish a complete list of individual sanity values. Exact per-card numbers should therefore be checked in the current game build rather than treated as fixed universal values.

What the challenge achievements reveal
Three achievement conditions identify play styles the game deliberately supports:

Together, these objectives show that Burn With Me is not solely about producing the largest possible number. You may deliberately accept a non-perfect turn, refuse an extra draw, or solve a ritual without sacrificing cards. The game rewards control over your deck and board, not just explosive combinations.

It is both, with the two layers affecting each other. The deckbuilding layer determines which cards, growth paths, creatures, demons, and sanity interactions can appear in future hands. The puzzle layer determines how five drawn cards fit onto the pentagram right now. A strong deck cannot rescue every poor placement, and a clever placement cannot compensate forever for a deck that has been over-burned or diluted with unsuitable cards.

A practical beginner routine
- Start with the threshold, not the flashiest card. Identify the minimum total needed and reserve a margin for effects that may not resolve as expected.
- Mark forced-burn risks. Before placing a card, check whether its sequence or neighbor condition can make it burn automatically.
- Build the board pattern first. Place cards to satisfy adjacency, parity, and isolation requirements, then compare the resulting blood total.
- Protect growth pieces. Avoid sacrificing a card that has become a high-point anchor unless the ritual or deck state genuinely requires it.
- Plan sanity in order. Arrange generation and spending so the vessel can be used and, when possible, refilled during the same turn.
- Review the deck after the ritual. A new demon, a burned card, or a growth increase changes the next hand’s probabilities. Reconsider your usual five-card pattern rather than repeating it automatically.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Chasing the largest printed total
A high blood value does not guarantee success if it breaks the board’s positional conditions. Rebuild around a pattern that resolves reliably, even if its theoretical ceiling is lower.
Burning to fix every bad hand
Use a burn to secure a meaningful outcome, not merely to remove discomfort. If several cards have already left the deck, prioritize preserving a complete five-card pool and the effects that make it coherent.
Accepting every new card
After an encounter, judge a reward by the hands it enables. A demon card that adds a small amount of blood but disrupts your common positions may reduce consistency.
Spending sanity without a refill plan
Because sanity can be regenerated, sequence the turn around the full cycle. Spending first may be correct when it unlocks a generator, but spending with no route to refill wastes the resource’s central advantage.
What is and is not confirmed about the launch build
Current documentation confirms the October 12, 2026 release date, six chapters, almost 100 cards, permanent burning, card growth, creature-focused builds, and the reusable sanity-vessel behavior described above. The official Steam page reported 229 user reviews with 90% positive at the captured time in 2026; that reception figure, along with price and sale status, can change.
Exact card names, individual burn costs, and per-card sanity values are not fully documented. The mechanics guide notes that those details are still being verified, so a complete authoritative card table cannot be supplied from the confirmed information. Treat values shown in your installed build as the current authority, especially after patches.
Bottom line
Burn With Me’s identity comes from the interaction of three decisions: where five cards sit on the pentagram, which cards you are willing to remove forever, and how you cycle growth, creatures, and sanity into the next ritual. Winning consistently means building patterns you can reproduce, preserving enough cards to keep drawing five, and accepting that a smaller reliable score can be better than a spectacular combination that works only once.
