Yes. Bun 1.1 brought Bun’s runtime, test runner, package manager, and bundler to Windows 10 and later. Bytes issue #276, published April 1, 2024, called the launch “Bundows”; the nickname framed a real release, not a separate product. The announcement and its figures are historical: they describe Bun’s claims at launch, not current benchmarks or a guarantee that every Node.js project will work unchanged.
What “Bundows” refers to
“Bundows” was the playful headline of Bytes issue #276, published April 1, 2024. Its central story was Bun 1.1’s Windows release. Bun described itself as an all-in-one toolkit for running, building, testing, and debugging JavaScript and TypeScript, and said the 1.1 release included more than 1,700 commits and fixes for over 1,000 bugs since Bun 1.0. Those counts are Bun’s own release-post statements.
The April Fools’ Day timing and joking headline did not make the Windows launch a joke. Bun’s official Bun 1.1 announcement, also dated April 1, 2024, documents the release.

Which parts of Bun 1.1 worked on Windows?
Bun said version 1.1 ran on Windows 10 and later, with its four core components available there:
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Runtime: runs JavaScript and TypeScript.
- Test runner: runs tests using Bun’s built-in runner.
- Package manager: installs project dependencies with
bun install. - Bundler: builds and bundles applications.
Bun reported that its Windows build passed 98% of the macOS and Linux test suite it used. That is a result reported by Bun for its own suite, not an independent assessment of Windows compatibility or proof that every application behaves identically across operating systems.
What Bun claimed about Windows performance
Bun’s release announcement published the following Windows comparisons. They are vendor-reported launch-era figures, not independent measurements, and should not be treated as results for current versions or as predictions for every project.
Rank #2
- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
| Task | Bun’s reported comparison | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Dependency installation | bun install was 18× faster than Yarn and 30× faster than npm. |
Bun’s Windows comparison installing a Vite React app; the app’s scripts were configured with --ignore-scripts. |
| Running package scripts | bun run was 11× faster than npm run. |
Bun’s Windows release-era claim. |
| Running package executables | bunx was 11× faster than npx. |
Bun’s Windows release-era claim. |
The figures answer what Bun advertised in 2024, not which tool will be faster for a particular project. The announcement does not establish independent replication or that the same ratios apply to different apps, machines, dependency trees, or later releases. For a real migration decision, compare the same project and task on the actual machine and tool versions you plan to use.

What else arrived with Bun 1.1?
Bun Shell
Bun introduced Bun Shell as a cross-platform, shell-like tool callable from JavaScript and TypeScript through Bun.$. It uses familiar shell syntax and provides built-in utilities, with the goal of making shell tasks usable across operating systems from application code.

Executable launching on Windows
Bun described a .bunx cross-filesystem symlink format for launching scripts or executables with Bun or Node.js. The release post said it addressed Windows differences involving symlinks and shebangs, and avoided needing separate .cmd, .sh, and .ps1 variants for each executable.
Glob, Semver, and server APIs
The release added built-in Glob and Semver APIs. It also listed APIs including server.url, server.requestIP(), and import.meta.env. These additions were part of the broader 1.1 release rather than Windows-only features.

Node.js compatibility work

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Bun’s stated goal was to be a “drop-in replacement for Node.js,” as the 1.1 announcement put it. That is Bun’s aim, not an independent finding that every Node.js API or dependency is compatible. Compatibility still depends on the APIs a project uses and how its dependencies behave.

Bun 1.1 answers the historical question of when Bun’s core toolkit arrived on Windows: Bun announced support for Windows 10 and later on April 1, 2024. It does not establish the current Bun version, present-day compatibility, or current performance. Bun’s blog index records releases after 1.1, so consult newer release materials for present-day claims.
If you are evaluating Bun for a project, check the current release notes for the version you intend to install, then verify the project’s Node.js APIs and dependencies and test its install, scripts, tests, and build. The 1.1 launch figures are useful context about what Bun claimed then, not a substitute for a project-specific comparison.
