To type the bullet character •, use the method supported by your operating system and app: Word on Windows can convert 2022 with Alt+X, GNOME/GTK Linux desktops accept Ctrl+Shift+U followed by 2022, and macOS offers Character Viewer. There is no single shortcut that works on every keyboard and in every app. If you need a properly formatted list rather than one symbol, use the app’s bulleted-list control.
First, choose between a bullet character and a bulleted list
The character • is ordinary text that you can place anywhere, such as between words or at the start of a line. A bulleted list is formatting: the editor manages list items, indentation, and continuation, and may let you change the bullet style. In Word, for example, typing an asterisk (*) at the start of a new line and pressing Space starts a formatted list; it does not simply insert a standalone bullet character. Microsoft’s Word shortcut reference describes that list workflow.
If you want one literal symbol, copy this one: •. Otherwise, use the platform-specific option below or the target app’s symbol insertion feature.

How to type a bullet point on Windows
In Microsoft Word and some other supporting apps
Type 2022, then press Alt+X. In a supporting app, the code converts to • (Unicode U+2022). Unicode identifies Word and Outlook as examples of apps that support hexadecimal entry with Alt+X; Microsoft documents the method for Word and notes that its shortcuts refer to a US keyboard layout. With Character Map
When the app does not support Alt+X, open Windows Character Map, find and select the bullet character, copy it, then paste it into the destination. Unicode lists Character Map as a Windows character-selection option: Unicode’s guidance on character selection.
What about Alt+0149?
Some secondary guides report entering Alt+0149 with a numeric keypad and Num Lock enabled. It depends on the application and keyboard setup; it is not established as a universal Windows code for this symbol. Character Map or an app-supported Unicode method is a more dependable fallback.

How to type a bullet point on macOS
Use Character Viewer
Open Character Viewer from Edit > Emoji & Symbols or from the Input menu, find the bullet, and insert it. This is useful when a shortcut is unknown or your keyboard layout differs. Unicode documents Character Viewer as a character-selection option: Unicode’s guidance for macOS.

Option+8 on a US keyboard layout
A secondary guide reports that Option+8 types • on a US keyboard layout. Keyboard layout matters, so use Character Viewer if this combination produces another character or does nothing. Unicode’s cited macOS guidance documents Character Viewer and a configurable Unicode hexadecimal-input method, but not this quick shortcut.

Configure hexadecimal input
For direct Unicode entry, add Unicode Hex Input in Keyboard settings, switch to that input source, hold Option, and type the character’s hexadecimal code, 2022. Unicode describes this configurable route along with Character Viewer: Unicode’s macOS instructions.
How to type a bullet point on Linux
GNOME and other GTK desktops
- Press Ctrl+Shift+U, then release the keys.
- Type
2022. - Press Space or Enter to insert •.
This documented Unicode-entry sequence applies to GNOME and other GTK environments, not every Linux desktop. See Unicode’s Linux instructions.

KDE and other Qt environments
Unicode’s guidance says KDE and other Qt environments do not have an equivalent built-in sequence. For character selection, it identifies KCharSelect on KDE and GNOME Character Map on GNOME. Availability may depend on the desktop installation. Consult Unicode’s character-selection guidance.

Unicode reports no official hexadecimal input method on iOS or Android and no built-in character-selection app equivalent to the desktop tools it describes. Third-party keyboards with hexadecimal functionality exist, but the available options vary. For a standalone •, copy the symbol above or use a symbol feature in the app if it provides one. For a formatted list in a document app, use that app’s list formatting controls; mobile keyboard shortcuts and symbol access differ by keyboard, app, and version. Why the shortcut may not work
- The application may not support it. Windows Alt+X is documented for particular apps, not for every text field.
- The keyboard layout may differ. The reported macOS Option+8 combination applies to a US layout.
- The desktop environment matters. Linux’s Ctrl+Shift+U method is documented for GNOME and GTK environments, not all Linux desktops.
- You may need list formatting instead. If you want indented items and continuation behavior, use the editor’s bulleted-list feature rather than inserting a text glyph.
