Choose a turntable with built-in speakers if you want the fewest boxes, the quickest setup and a self-contained record player. Choose separate speakers if you want to select speaker models, position them independently or replace components over time. Neither configuration is automatically better sounding: the result depends on the actual turntable, speaker, amplifier, phono stage, connections and room.

Before buying, map the complete signal chain. Every record player needs a phono stage somewhere, and passive speakers additionally need an amplifier or receiver. A built-in-speaker model may include some or all of those functions, but “built-in speakers” alone does not tell you whether it has a phono preamp, Bluetooth, an auxiliary input or an output for future upgrades.

What the two configurations actually are

Turntables with built-in speakers

This is an all-in-one product: the record-playing mechanism and small loudspeakers share one enclosure. You place the unit, connect power, put on a record and use its controls. The internal speakers remove the need to choose a separate amplifier and speaker pair, which is useful in a bedroom, office, dormitory or other small listening area.

Features vary widely. One model may contain a phono preamp and Bluetooth transmitter; another may offer only an analog input and a headphone jack. Some provide a line-level output that can feed larger speakers later, while others are intended to remain closed systems. Read the current specification sheet and manual for the exact model rather than assuming that a feature is present because another all-in-one turntable has it.

Turntables with separate speakers

“Separate speakers” describes a system in which the loudspeakers are external to the turntable. There are two practical versions:

  • Powered speakers: each speaker pair contains its own power amplifier. You still need a suitable line-level signal from the turntable or from an external phono stage.
  • Passive speakers: the speakers contain no power amplifier. A separate stereo amplifier or receiver drives them, and a phono stage must appear somewhere before that amplifier.

Separating the components lets you choose speaker size, input options, amplifier power and placement independently. It also introduces more cables and more opportunities for an input, output or phono-stage mismatch.

The phono stage: the requirement people miss

A phono cartridge produces a low-level signal that requires both amplification and equalization before a normal line input can use it. That job is performed by a phono stage, also called a phono preamp. Cambridge Audio explains that a phono stage can be built into the turntable, built into an amplifier through a dedicated PHONO input, or supplied by a separate box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every workable system has one of these arrangements:

  • Turntable preamp: the turntable converts its cartridge output to line level. Its LINE output can feed a powered speaker, an AUX/LINE input on an amplifier, or a receiver input that is not labeled PHONO.
  • Amplifier or receiver PHONO input: the turntable sends an unamplified PHONO signal, and the amplifier performs the phono-stage function. Connect that output only to the matching PHONO input.
  • External phono preamp: the turntable’s PHONO output goes to the external stage, then its line-level output goes to powered speakers or an amplifier’s AUX/LINE input.

Do not connect a PHONO-level output directly to an ordinary AUX, CD or LINE input and expect normal volume or correct tonal balance. Conversely, do not send a turntable’s already-amplified LINE output into a PHONO input unless the manual specifically permits it; the signal can be excessively strong and incorrectly equalized.

How each separate-speaker setup is wired

Powered-speaker chain

The simplest powered arrangement is:

Turntable with phono preamp (LINE) → powered speakers

If the turntable lacks a preamp, use:

Turntable (PHONO) → external phono preamp → powered speakers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fluance describes powered speakers as containing the speaker amplification. They do not, however, automatically provide a phono stage. Check whether the speakers accept RCA, a 3.5 mm analog input or another connection, and make sure the turntable’s output level matches that input. Some powered speakers include a PHONO input, but that is a model-specific feature, not a general property of powered speakers.

Passive-speaker chain

A conventional passive system is:

Turntable → phono stage → stereo amplifier or receiver → passive speakers

The phono stage may be inside the turntable, inside the amplifier or receiver, or in a separate preamp. A receiver can accept a turntable directly only when it has a suitable PHONO input or when the turntable is already providing line-level output. Passive speakers cannot be connected directly to a turntable’s RCA output; they need the amplifier between them.

Built-in versus separate speakers at a glance

Decision factor Built-in speakers Separate speakers
Basic convenience One integrated unit and fewer components to select. Requires speaker selection and connection; passive systems also require an amplifier or receiver.
Space Compact footprint; the speaker location is fixed by the enclosure. Needs room for speakers and, in a passive system, an amplifier or receiver. Speakers can be placed apart from the turntable.
Phono-stage responsibility May be included, but verify the specification. Must be in the turntable, amplifier/receiver or a separate phono preamp.
Amplification Internal speaker amplifier is part of the product. Powered speakers include amplification; passive speakers require an external amplifier or receiver.
Connections Inputs and outputs are model-specific and may be limited. Choose the connections across the turntable, phono stage, amplifier and speakers.
Placement Left and right drivers remain close together and attached to the turntable. Independent placement can create a wider stereo arrangement, subject to the room and speaker design.
Upgrading Usually means replacing or supplementing the whole unit unless an output is provided. Individual speakers, amplifier or phono stage can be changed independently when connections remain compatible.
Sound-quality certainty Depends on the particular all-in-one design and its placement. More choice of components, but no universal guarantee of better sound.

When built-in speakers are the better choice

You want a system that works immediately

An all-in-one turntable minimizes decisions about speaker sensitivity, amplifier matching and cable types. It is appropriate when your priority is playing records rather than assembling a system. Confirm that the package includes the phono stage you need and that the control layout suits you before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You have limited space

A single enclosure can fit on a shelf or small desk where two speakers and an amplifier would not. Leave enough clearance for the tonearm, record handling and ventilation. Because the drivers are close to the turntable, you cannot create a conventional wide left-right speaker triangle without adding external speakers.

You accept the integrated sound and feature set

Built-in speakers are a sensible fit when their volume, bass response and available inputs meet your expectations. Listen to credible product-specific evaluations or, where possible, use a return policy; the category label alone does not predict performance.

When separate speakers are the better choice

You want to select the sound and placement

External speakers let you choose a compact bookshelf pair for a desk, larger cabinets for a living room or a model with a particular tonal balance. Positioning the speakers apart from the turntable can improve stereo separation and reduces the temptation to place the turntable directly between vibrating cabinets. Fluance’s passive-speaker setup illustration shows the speakers placed away from the turntable; treat that as a useful starting arrangement, not a universal acoustic rule.

You expect to upgrade in stages

With separate components, you can replace the speakers without replacing the turntable, add a better phono preamp later or move from powered speakers to a passive amplifier-based system. This flexibility is valuable only when the existing outputs and inputs remain compatible, so keep the manuals and note whether each connection is PHONO-level or line-level.

You need more inputs or room-filling output

Powered speakers and receivers commonly offer additional analog inputs, and a receiver may add a radio, digital inputs or a subwoofer connection. These are model-specific capabilities. Compare the complete feature lists rather than assuming that every external-speaker system includes them.

Use this decision process before buying

  1. Define the room and listening position. Measure the shelf or cabinet, identify where the listener will sit and decide whether two independently placed speakers can fit.
  2. List every source. Include records, a phone, a television, a computer or headphones. Verify that the chosen turntable, powered speakers or receiver provide the required inputs.
  3. Locate the phono stage. Look for a turntable PHONO/LINE switch, a built-in preamp specification or a receiver input explicitly labeled PHONO. If none is present, budget space and connections for an external phono preamp.
  4. Decide between powered and passive speakers. Powered speakers reduce the component count. Passive speakers give you a separate amplifier choice but require that extra device.
  5. Check the output and input types. Match RCA, 3.5 mm or other analog connectors and confirm whether the signal is PHONO-level or line-level. An adapter can change a plug shape, but it does not create a missing phono stage or amplifier.
  6. Plan the upgrade route. If you may add larger speakers, a subwoofer or a receiver, choose a turntable with an appropriate line output and avoid an all-in-one model with no useful output.
  7. Compare the complete cost and footprint. Count the turntable, phono preamp if needed, powered speakers or amplifier, passive speakers, cables and stands. A low-priced turntable can become a larger system once missing stages and amplification are added.

Step-by-step setup instructions

Setting up a built-in-speaker turntable

  1. Place the unit on a stable, level surface with room to operate the tonearm and open any dust cover.
  2. Install the platter, belt, cartridge guard and counterweight exactly as the manual specifies.
  3. Check whether the turntable has a PHONO/LINE selector. Select LINE when feeding an ordinary line input or when the internal speakers require the preamp; select PHONO only when the manual says an external or amplifier-integrated phono stage will be used.
  4. Connect the power supply, select the correct speed and start playback at low volume.
  5. If you plan to use external speakers later, verify that the output is genuinely line-level and that the manual permits that connection.

Setting up powered speakers

  1. Determine whether the turntable output is LINE or PHONO.
  2. If it is PHONO, connect it to an external phono preamp or to a powered speaker input explicitly designed for PHONO.
  3. Connect the line-level output to the powered speakers’ matching analog input. Do not power on until the signal path is complete.
  4. Place the left and right speakers on stable surfaces, at approximately equal distances from the listening position, with the tweeters near ear height when practical.
  5. Start with the speaker volume low, select the correct input and raise the level gradually.

Setting up passive speakers and an amplifier

  1. Confirm that the amplifier or receiver can drive the chosen passive speakers and that its speaker terminals accept the required cable.
  2. Find the phono stage. Use the turntable’s LINE output into an AUX/LINE input, or use its PHONO output into the amplifier’s PHONO input, or insert an external phono preamp before a line input.
  3. Connect the amplifier’s left and right speaker outputs to the corresponding passive speakers, observing polarity markings.
  4. Keep speaker wires from touching each other or an adjacent terminal. Switch the amplifier on with its volume at minimum.
  5. Select the correct source, play a record and increase volume slowly. If one channel is missing, stop and check both cable ends and the balance control.

Understanding the PHONO and LINE switch

The switch is not standardized in its physical location or labeling, so follow the individual manual. In a Cambridge Audio Bluetooth FAQ revised 9 October 2025, PHONO bypasses the turntable’s built-in phono preamp for use with an external stage or an amplifier’s integrated phono stage, while LINE enables Bluetooth on the specific turntable addressed by that FAQ. That behavior should not be generalized to every brand or model.

Before changing the switch, lower the volume and stop playback. Write down the original position if you are troubleshooting, then verify the receiving input after the change. Bluetooth operation, analog output behavior and simultaneous wired/Bluetooth use can differ by model.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Placement and vibration considerations

Built-in speakers place the drivers and turntable mechanism in the same cabinet. Keep the unit on a rigid surface and avoid placing it directly against a vibrating wall or on an unstable stand. If feedback occurs at higher volume, lower the level, move the unit or use external speakers if the model supports them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With separate speakers, avoid placing the turntable on the same lightweight surface that carries a high-output speaker. Start with the speakers facing the listening position and separated by a distance similar to their distance from you. Adjust placement for the room, bass buildup and reflected sound; the diagram in a setup guide is a starting point rather than a guarantee for every room.

Common problems and precise fixes

Very quiet sound from a separate system

  • The turntable may be set to PHONO while connected to an AUX/LINE input. Engage the turntable’s preamp or add an external phono stage.
  • The receiver may be set to the wrong source or its volume may be near minimum.
  • A cable may be connected to an output that is not active in the selected mode. Check the manual.

Loud, harsh or distorted sound

  • A LINE output may be connected to a PHONO input. Move it to AUX/LINE or switch the turntable to the documented PHONO mode only if an external stage is being used.
  • The amplifier or powered speaker may be clipping at excessive volume. Reduce the level and check gain controls.
  • Confirm that the cartridge, stylus and tracking setup follow the turntable manual.

No sound from passive speakers

  • Check that an amplifier or receiver is present; passive speakers cannot run directly from a turntable.
  • Verify that the amplifier is powered, the correct input is selected and both speaker terminals are firmly connected.
  • Check for a missing phono stage if the turntable is sending PHONO-level output to a line input.

Bluetooth works but the wired output does not

Some models change behavior when the PHONO/LINE switch changes. On the Cambridge Audio model covered by the 9 October 2025 FAQ, LINE is the setting used to enable Bluetooth. Consult your model’s manual for whether Bluetooth, analog output and internal speakers can operate simultaneously.

Hum or buzz

  • Separate signal cables from power adapters and avoid tightly coiling them around power supplies.
  • If the turntable has a ground wire, connect it to the amplifier or phono preamp ground terminal as directed.
  • Test one input and one cable at a time to identify whether the noise follows a component.

How to judge sound without assuming a winner

Do not treat “separate speakers” as a guaranteed sound-quality rating. Fluance states that a separate-speaker system will provide audio quality superior to a system with built-in speakers, but that is a manufacturer’s claim rather than a controlled, universal comparison. Different all-in-one turntables and separate systems use different cartridges, amplifiers, drivers and cabinets.

For a fair personal comparison, keep the record, listening position and volume similar. Check whether the system produces balanced vocals, clean cymbals, controlled bass and a stable center image at the level you actually use. Also consider surface noise, hum and handling convenience. A system that is technically more configurable may be less enjoyable if it is difficult to operate or placed poorly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget and component planning

Compare complete systems, not just turntable prices. An all-in-one purchase may include the speaker amplifier and phono stage. A separate setup may require powered speakers or, for passive speakers, both an amplifier and speaker cable; a missing phono stage adds another component. The appropriate total depends on the room, desired volume, inputs and upgrade plans, so a single universal “best budget” figure would be misleading.

If you choose powered bookshelf speakers, look for RCA or AUX input and verify that the turntable supplies line-level output or that a phono preamp is included upstream. If you choose passive speakers, reserve space and funds for a compatible stereo amplifier or receiver. Select a phono preamp when neither the turntable nor amplifier provides the required stage.

A practical choice for common situations

Your situation Most practical starting point Check before purchase
Bedroom or office with little furniture Built-in-speaker turntable Internal phono stage, volume capability, headphone or line output and physical clearance.
Desk system with a phone or computer as another source Turntable with line output plus powered speakers Analog input count, output level and whether source switching is convenient.
Living-room listening with future upgrades Turntable plus powered or passive external speakers Upgrade outputs, speaker placement, amplifier requirements and room size.
Existing stereo receiver with a PHONO input Turntable set to PHONO plus passive speakers already driven by the receiver Receiver’s PHONO input, cartridge compatibility and speaker impedance requirements in the manuals.
Existing amplifier with only AUX/LINE inputs Turntable with a built-in preamp set to LINE, or an external phono preamp Correct switch position and available analog input.

What to verify in the product manual

  • Whether the turntable includes a switchable phono preamp.
  • What PHONO and LINE mean on that particular model.
  • Whether Bluetooth is available and which mode enables it.
  • Which outputs remain active when internal speakers or Bluetooth are used.
  • Whether an external amplifier or powered speakers may be connected.
  • Whether the speakers are powered or passive and what amplifier load they require.
  • Which cables, ground wires and power supplies are included.

Manufacturers can revise specifications and manuals, and regional versions can differ. Check the current documentation for the exact model and market before ordering.

The decision in one sentence

Buy built-in speakers for a compact, low-complexity record player whose included features meet your needs; buy separate speakers when independent placement, component choice and future upgrades matter more than having one self-contained box. In either case, trace the signal from cartridge to speaker and confirm that the phono stage, amplification and input level are present exactly once in the chain.
