Building NICHLYST: How to Code a Survival Engine When You Are Failing to Survive is Eugene Kozlovsky’s first-person account of building a narrative survival game while living through the war in Kyiv and facing serious personal distress. The August 29, 2026 DEV Community post is a build-in-public devlog, not a neutral tutorial or clinical report: its technical details are the author’s descriptions of his own project, not independently tested results. [Read the post]
What the NICHLYST post is about
Kozlovsky connects software development decisions to a central tension: building a game about survival while struggling with survival in real life. He describes the difficulty of measuring his own state alongside the familiar developer impulse to measure defects in a build or codebase. His line, “You cannot fix what you do not measure — not a failing build, not a leaking color, and not developer burnout,” frames that connection as a personal reflection, not a general prescription for managing mental health.
The post’s setting matters. It situates the project in wartime Kyiv and describes the author’s distress without making the game’s development a substitute for clinical care or turning his experience into evidence about mental health more broadly.

How the game’s presentation changed
From brief choices to four daily phases
The exact-title post describes a shift away from terse choice prompts toward a more literary structure. Each day is divided into four phases: Awakening, Approach, Encounter, and Dilemma. Instead of presenting every event as a short decision, the game gives scenes room to unfold through multiple paragraphs, scrolling, fade-ins, and drop-cap styling. The interface is part of the pacing: the player reads through a moment rather than simply receiving a prompt and selecting an option.
#1 Best Overall
- From the creator of the fun card games Loaded Questions and Awkward Family Photos Greatest Hits.
- The ALL NEW Worst-Case Scenario Card Game is different from trivia games with 0% trivia and 100% humorous fun
- This game for adults and kids is based on the The New York Times bestselling Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook.
- An easy-to-learn card game that is perfect for family game night. (Ages 10-Adult / 3-6 Players)
- In this family card game for kids and adults, match how players rank five worst-case scenarios from 1 (Bad) to 5 (The Worst). Match correctly and score points. Score the most points...and win
A September 6 follow-up says the narrative covers Days 1–15 and describes sentence rhythm as a way to reflect changing circumstances: fragmented prose during a raid, followed by longer, more meditative sentences in its aftermath. That is the author’s account of an artistic choice, not a measured finding about how players respond. [Read the follow-up]
A deliberately constrained palette
Kozlovsky says NICHLYST uses five colors: #232626 (Pitch Dark), #3E403F (Slate), #736758 (Sepia), #A69B8D (Ash), and #BFB3A4 (Bone). To catch colors outside that set, he describes a shell pre-commit hook that checks staged files for hexadecimal color values that do not match the palette and rejects them.

- The Official Survivor card game is here: Collect advantages, find hidden Immunity Idols, form secret alliances, and vote out other players to become the sole survivor.
- Designed by Jeff Probst: From the 67 Action Cards and 12 Survivor Character Cards to the Voting Box and Survival Guide– each one underwent rigorous testing by the King of Survivor.
- Perfect For Survivor Fans And Newbies Alike: It’s easy to learn and quick to play for adults, teens, and kids aged 8 and up.
- This party game brings all the thrills and drama of the island to family game nights or Survivor watch parties. Plus, it’s a great gift for the Survivor fan in your life.
- From The People Who Brought You Exploding Kittens: The Kickstarter famous, viral card game that started it all!
This is a project-specific consistency check. It can flag a particular kind of accidental change in staged files; the post does not establish that it guarantees visual consistency, catches every color format, or provides a security measure.

The follow-up describes an aria-live="polite" subtitle region intended to make atmospheric audio legible to screen-reader users. Instead of literal sound labels such as “wind blows,” the author says the subtitles convey the emotional character of a sound. The post also describes visual behavior that changes with game state.
Rank #3
- Semi Coop game where many can win, but killing the alien may endanger crew members as well.
- Death comes quickly in this game and ten minutes later, you are all jumping back in to play again
- Simple rules make for a perfect party game. Play two cards and see who's dead.
These are design intentions and implementation details as reported by Kozlovsky. They do not establish that NICHLYST passed accessibility testing or that the experience works equally well for all assistive-technology users.
How the project handles a large content file
The September 6 follow-up reports that the original game_data.json held 40 days, 31 endings, and 116 persistent flags across more than 4,000 lines. Kozlovsky says he split the content into modules and added a manifest loader that falls back to a bundled monolithic file if the modules fail to load.
Rank #4
- EXCITING SURVIVAL GAMEPLAY: Navigate a sinking island to escape with the most treasures, dodging new terrifying monsters and rival players who might thwart your plans.
- INCLUDES NEW MONSTER CHALLENGE: Enhance your game with the inclusion of a brand-new monster, adding unpredictability and thrilling challenges to every round.
- EXPANDED PLAYER OPTIONS: Now accommodating up to 5 players, this version allows more friends and family to join in the suspenseful escape from the treacherous island.
- STRATEGIC GAME OF RISK AND REWARD: Players must balance the pursuit of treasure with their survival instincts, making strategic decisions that could either aid their escape or doom them to the island’s fate.
- PERFECT FOR FAMILY GAME NIGHT: Designed for players aged 10 and up, this game is an ideal choice for family gatherings, offering a blend of strategy, excitement, and competitive fun.
The choice addresses a practical concern in the project: a large file can become a single point of failure, while modular content is easier to separate. Keeping a bundled fallback is the author’s described resilience strategy. These figures and the loader behavior are project-reported, not independently verified reliability results.
How monetization appears in the story
The follow-up reports a premium unlock priced at $4.99 in the described flow, presented after Day 3 through RevenueCat and framed in-world as an Archive threshold. That is a dated description of the project’s approach, not confirmation of current pricing, availability, or launch status.

What to take from the build-in-public account
- Technical mechanisms can reinforce design choices. The palette hook turns a visual constraint into a repository check, while chapter phases and transitions make reading pace part of the game’s narrative presentation.
- Accessibility can be treated as a voice and content decision. The author’s semantic subtitle approach aims to preserve atmosphere while conveying sound, though its effectiveness still requires testing with users and assistive technologies.
- Content architecture changes as a project grows. The reported move from one large JSON file to modules plus a fallback shows how the developer responded to a growing body of branching narrative data.
- Personal context is central to this particular devlog. The post is valuable as a record of one developer’s work and circumstances; it should not be read as a general mental-health guide, validated engineering benchmark, or proof that the game is available today.
