Rayfin is Microsoft’s open-source, code-first SDK for building fully managed applications on Microsoft Fabric. You define TypeScript data models and application code; Fabric Apps (currently in preview) generates APIs, authentication, hosting, and integration with Fabric services. A typical project can be scaffolded with the Rayfin CLI, developed in VS Code, and deployed to a Fabric-capacity workspace without maintaining separate database or API infrastructure.
What Microsoft Rayfin does
Rayfin is the development layer behind Fabric Apps. Instead of assembling a web server, database, identity integration, and deployment pipeline separately, you describe the application in TypeScript and let the managed Fabric service provide those capabilities.
Rayfin analyzes model decorators such as @entity, @text, @uuid, @boolean, and @date. From that metadata it can generate database tables, GraphQL endpoints, row-level authorization rules, and typed client methods. The result is a code-owned backend rather than a collection of portal-edited resources.

Prerequisites and tenant setup
Before creating an app, confirm all of the following:
- Access to Microsoft Fabric.
- A workspace assigned to Fabric capacity.
- Workspace permissions that allow you to create and deploy the app.
- Node.js 20 or later and npm, as required by Microsoft’s quickstart.
- A Fabric tenant administrator who has enabled the Fabric Apps (preview) workload.
Workspace capacity and permissions are separate concerns: having a Fabric account does not by itself grant the ability to create or deploy an app in every workspace.

npm run devThe scaffold creates the project files, provisions or updates the services described by the project, and starts the development workflow. The CLI can target a workspace during scaffolding or deployment; use the workspace selected by the prompts or the generated project configuration.
Use the Fabric portal and VS Code
- In the Fabric portal, select New item → App (preview).
- Choose a workspace that has Fabric capacity.
- Open the app item in VS Code.
- Work on the generated TypeScript project and use Rayfin CLI commands for local development, deployment, and schema changes.
This is a supported VS Code-to-Fabric workflow: VS Code is the editing environment, while the Rayfin CLI performs the deployment and service operations.

Use --dry-run before a significant schema or service change, then verify the result with npx rayfin up status or its JSON form. Database and static-content commands are useful when you need to release only one part of the application.

Because the schema and deployment settings are code-owned, make changes through Rayfin commands and project files. Direct edits to a portal database can diverge from the source model and are not the normal change path.
What a deployed app contains
A deployed Fabric App is a managed Fabric item with child services. Microsoft documents managed SQL, brokered authentication, static-content hosting, and app networking. Rayfin’s deployment model also supports optional server-side functions and connector routes.
The generated GraphQL API and typed clients provide a consistent way for the frontend to access model data. Authorization rules generated from the model are intended to enforce row-level access, while the surrounding Fabric item remains subject to Fabric’s governance, security, and compliance foundations.

Identity, permissions, and governance
Deployed applications use Fabric single sign-on through Microsoft Entra ID. Access is controlled at the Fabric item as well as the workspace level. The documented item permissions are:
- Run and interact: use the deployed application.
- Edit (Write): change the item.
- Reshare: share the item with other users.
Workspace roles do not automatically substitute for these item-level permissions. Plan both layers when an app is shared with colleagues or embedded in an internal process.
Where Rayfin fits well
- Rapid prototypes: move from a TypeScript model to a working Fabric-hosted app quickly.
- Authenticated internal tools and dashboards: use Fabric SSO and existing workspace governance.
- Data exploration and visualization: build interfaces directly around Fabric-managed data.
- AI or agent applications: combine application logic with data and services already governed in Fabric.
These scenarios benefit most when the application’s data, identity, and governance already belong in the Fabric estate.

When Rayfin may be a poor fit
- Complex multi-step transactions: verify that the generated data and API model can express the required transactional behavior before committing to the architecture.
- Stored-procedure-heavy designs: a code-first model may not align with a system whose business logic primarily lives in extensive stored procedures.
- Non-Fabric identity providers: the documented deployment path centers on Fabric SSO; providers beyond Fabric SSO and local email/password are cautioned scenarios.
- Production-critical dependencies on preview behavior: evaluate regional availability, feature maturity, and change risk before making a preview service a hard dependency.
How to compare Rayfin with other application platforms
Compare the underlying operating model rather than only the user interface:

Questions to settle before production use
- Has the tenant administrator enabled Fabric Apps (preview) in the target tenant?
- Does the target workspace have Fabric capacity and the required permissions?
- Can the application’s identity model work with Fabric SSO?
- Are schema changes managed in source control and applied with Rayfin commands?
- Has a dry-run deployment been reviewed, followed by a status check?
- Does the team accept the operational and regional uncertainty associated with a preview feature?
Microsoft has not published an independent performance benchmark, adoption figure, market-size estimate, or standard Rayfin cost figure in the material describing this feature. Capacity and tenant arrangements therefore need to be evaluated in the context of the organization’s existing Fabric setup rather than inferred from a universal price or throughput promise.
Why Microsoft is promoting the model
The appeal is a shorter path from application code to a governed deployment. Amjad Masad, CEO of Replit, described the model this way: “Rayfin unlocks a new development model for our users. Agents write the code. Fabric ships it quickly and safely. Together, we’re giving developers something they’ve never had before: a path from idea to enterprise-grade production that’s measured in hours, not months.” That is a positioning statement, not an independent performance measurement; teams should validate deployment time, controls, and application behavior against their own requirements.
For teams already invested in Fabric, Rayfin is best understood as a managed, TypeScript-first application layer. It can make internal tools, dashboards, data experiences, and AI-oriented apps faster to build, provided the preview status, Fabric SSO model, workspace administration, and code-owned schema workflow fit the project.
