The ASUS ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi7 Neo is an ATX AM5 motherboard with four M.2 sockets, 5 GbE, Wi-Fi 7 and convenient build features—but its near-$320 review price puts it in territory where some buyers should consider X870 boards. It makes the strongest case for an all-M.2 build that benefits from fast wired networking and plentiful rear USB. Two SATA ports, Wi-Fi 7 limited to 160 MHz and no onboard USB4 are meaningful trade-offs.
What the B850-F Gaming WiFi7 Neo is—and who it suits
This is an AMD AM5 motherboard built around the B850 chipset in an ATX layout. ASUS’s comparison document also classifies the model as AM5, B850 and ATX (ASUS product page; ASUS comparison document).
It is aimed at builders who want multiple fast NVMe drives, 5-gigabit Ethernet, a broad rear USB selection and hardware that makes assembly and basic diagnostics easier. It is less compelling if your build depends on several SATA drives, onboard USB4 or the broadest possible Wi-Fi bandwidth. At this price, the question is not just whether its feature list is long, but whether you will use the features that distinguish it.

The board has four M.2 sockets: two support PCIe 5.0 x4 and two support PCIe 4.0 x4. The primary graphics slot is PCIe 5.0 x16, and a secondary full-length slot runs at PCIe 4.0 x4. The trade-off is a total of just two SATA ports, which can be restrictive if you are reusing multiple older drives or adding several SATA devices.

Tom’s Hardware noted that the primary M.2 heatsink made only light contact with the drive controller during its inspection. That observation is relevant if you expect sustained transfers from a hot PCIe 5.0 SSD: drive temperatures depend on the specific drive, workload and airflow, so check temperatures in your own system rather than assuming the heatsink will keep every drive cool under heavy sustained load.
Connectivity: fast wired networking, with limits to note
Tom’s Hardware lists Realtek 5 GbE wired networking, MediaTek Wi-Fi 7 operating at 160 MHz on 6 GHz, and Bluetooth 5.4. The 160 MHz specification matters: this is not a 320 MHz Wi-Fi 7 implementation. Real-world wireless speeds also depend on the router or access point, client device, signal conditions and local radio environment.

The rear panel has 12 USB ports, including two Type-C ports rated at 10 Gbps and another Type-C port rated at 5 Gbps. The board also has a front-panel USB Type-C header rated at 20 Gbps and three internal USB 2.0 headers. It includes a Thunderbolt/USB4 header for a compatible add-in card, but no onboard USB4 port. If USB4 devices are central to your setup, distinguish the expansion header from built-in USB4 connectivity before buying.

Tom’s Hardware’s specification table lists a 20-phase power design, including 16 80 A DrMOS devices for Vcore. The reviewer judged the VRM capacity ample for high-end Ryzen processors; that is the reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee of a particular overclock or operating temperature in every case.

There are four DDR5 DIMM slots. The review lists support up to DDR5-8400+ with memory overclocking and DDR5-9200 with an APU. Those figures describe supported configurations, not a promise that any CPU and memory kit will reach them. In a short test, the reviewer found a DDR5-8000 kit that was absent from the memory support list unstable and advised checking the memory QVL. Confirm the current QVL and BIOS support for your CPU and kit, and treat memory overclocking as configuration-dependent.
A BCLK clock generator is among the board’s tuning features. It may appeal to enthusiasts who want additional clock-adjustment options, but its presence alone does not establish a performance gain; results depend on the processor, settings, cooling and stability.

Build conveniences and onboard audio
The board includes tool-free M.2 heatsink and latch mechanisms, a push-button PCIe Q-Release, BIOS Flashback and Q-LED status lights. These features can simplify drive or graphics-card installation and help with basic troubleshooting; they do not make the system faster. The review also lists Realtek ALC4080 audio with a Savitech amplifier, which the reviewer considered a strong audio implementation for this class.
How it performed in Tom’s Hardware’s review
Tom’s Hardware characterized most synthetic and timed-application results as average to above average, with gaming performance as expected. That supports a view of the Neo as a well-equipped platform rather than a board shown to deliver a distinct gaming-frame-rate advantage over alternatives.

In the review’s DDR5-7200 stress-test configuration, the board recorded 73 W at idle and 253 W at peak. The reviewer described those results as among the more efficient B850/X870 boards in that test set. These are measurements from that particular test setup, not universal power figures for systems built with this motherboard.
Price and how to judge its value
Joe Shields’s Tom’s Hardware review, published 25 August 2026, described the board as nearly $320 and noted that X870 boards enter the comparison above $300. The review page also displayed retailer offers of $289.99 and $319.99, plus a separate Amazon offer at $402.38. These are conflicting, time-sensitive listing snapshots—not a single stable price, MSRP or guarantee of current availability.
Compare the live total price of this board with the X870 alternatives you would actually use, then weigh the features that affect your build:

- M.2 capacity and generation: Will you use more than two M.2 drives, and do you need two PCIe 5.0 x4 sockets?
- USB4: Do you need an onboard USB4 port, or would an add-in card connected to the board’s header suit your setup?
- Networking: Would 5 GbE be useful on your wired network? For Wi-Fi, check that your router and clients support the bandwidth you expect; this board’s Wi-Fi 7 operates at 160 MHz.
- Drive reuse: Can your build work with two SATA connections?
- Build and tuning features: Are the quick-release hardware, BIOS Flashback, Q-LEDs and BCLK clock generator worth paying for in your use case?
If those capabilities solve concrete needs and the current price is competitive with the alternatives you are considering, the Neo’s dense feature set can make sense. If several of its differentiators would go unused, its B850 label does not by itself make it a value buy.
