For a new native Windows desktop app, start by assessing WinUI 3 with the Windows App SDK: Microsoft recommends it for new Windows desktop applications. That recommendation is a useful default, not a rule for every project. WPF and Windows Forms remain documented .NET desktop options, and existing apps can adopt supported Windows App SDK capabilities without an automatic rewrite.
Which C# desktop framework should you choose?
Choose based on whether you are starting fresh or maintaining an existing application, which Windows versions and UI capabilities you need, and what your team can support. Microsoft does not publish a universal scorecard that makes one framework the right choice for every app.
| Situation | Reasonable starting point | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| New native Windows app with a modern Windows UI | WinUI 3 with the Windows App SDK | Microsoft calls WinUI 3 its recommended native UI framework for new Windows desktop apps. It uses C# and XAML; the documented OS baseline is Windows 10 version 1809 (build 17763) and later, including Windows 11. Microsoft’s Windows app getting-started guidance and WinUI 3 documentation provide the details. |
| Existing WPF, Windows Forms, or Win32 app | Keep the current framework if it meets the app’s needs; consider adding Windows App SDK capabilities where supported | The Windows App SDK supports WinUI 3 and can also be used with existing WPF, Windows Forms, and Win32 apps. An incremental modernization path may be more appropriate than rewriting a working application. Microsoft’s Windows App SDK overview describes supported app types. |
| Learning WPF or building a WPF app | Use the current WPF Application template targeting modern .NET | Microsoft’s tutorial walks through creating, running, and debugging a WPF app. For its modern .NET route, it says not to select the .NET Framework template. Microsoft’s WPF tutorial gives the steps. |
| Windows Forms project | Consider Windows Forms if it suits the app and team’s needs | It remains a documented .NET desktop UI technology. The setup steps below focus on Microsoft’s WinUI quickstart and WPF tutorial; do not assume their project templates or instructions apply to Windows Forms. Microsoft’s .NET desktop guide covers the desktop technologies. |
The WinUI 3 baseline is not a promise that every Windows API, third-party library, or package works identically on every supported system. Check the particular API and SDK version you plan to use before committing to more specific compatibility requirements.

Microsoft’s current WinUI quickstart lists .NET SDK 10 or later and Developer Mode as requirements. For the Visual Studio route, it identifies Visual Studio 2026 with the WinUI application development workload. For its command-line route, it specifies winapp CLI 0.6 or later; that CLI is in public preview, so check the quickstart for current labels and instructions before using it. Read Microsoft’s WinUI quickstart.

Microsoft describes stable Windows App SDK releases as intended for production apps. Preview and experimental channels offer earlier access, but APIs can change or be removed. For a first production app, prefer stable components unless you have a specific reason to accept that risk. See the stable release channel guidance.
Create and run your first WinUI app
- Enable Developer Mode. Follow the current Windows instructions linked from Microsoft’s WinUI quickstart. The exact Settings path can vary by Windows version.
- Install the development tools. Install .NET SDK 10 or later and, if using Visual Studio, Visual Studio 2026 with the WinUI application development workload. Confirm the current prerequisites on Microsoft’s quickstart page.
- Create a blank C# WinUI project. Use the project-creation route in the quickstart. Microsoft’s documented alternative is the winapp CLI workflow, which requires winapp CLI 0.6 or later and is marked public preview.
- Run the app. In Visual Studio, press F5 to build and launch the project. If the build or launch fails, check the installed workload, SDK version, and Developer Mode against the current quickstart.
- Make one visible change. Add a XAML
TextBlockto the app layout, then run the project again. This small change confirms that you can edit the interface, rebuild, and see the result.
For a WPF project instead, use Microsoft’s WPF Visual Studio tutorial. Its listed prerequisites are Visual Studio 2026, the .NET desktop development workload, and the .NET 10 component. Choose the WPF Application template targeting .NET 10 (LTS), not “WPF Application (.NET Framework),” for the modern .NET path described there.

What to learn after the window appears
A running blank window proves the project builds; it does not yet make a useful program. Grow the app in small steps, adding one behavior at a time:
- Controls and layout: arrange buttons, text fields, menus, and other controls so the interface remains understandable as the window changes size.
- Events or commands: connect user actions to app behavior while keeping the interface code manageable.
- Data binding: use it where it makes displaying and updating application data clearer.
- Input validation and error handling: explain invalid input and recover from expected failures instead of leaving users with a silent or confusing result.
- Local data: decide what the app needs to save, where it belongs, and how users can recover or update it.
- Accessibility and debugging: make controls usable beyond mouse-only interaction, then use the debugger to trace unexpected behavior.
These are sensible next learning topics, not claims that the quickstart teaches them all. Keep the first app small enough that you can understand the flow from user action to visible result.

Creating an app is not the same as shipping it
Once the app works locally, plan packaging and distribution as separate tasks. Microsoft documents MSIX packaging, Windows App SDK deployment options, choosing a distribution path, and publishing through Microsoft Store. These are alternatives and later release decisions, not requirements that every app use MSIX or the Store. Review Microsoft’s packaging and deployment guidance for the route that fits your app. Version-specific packaging, signing, runtime, and Store requirements should be checked there when preparing a release.
