To create an AI coding agent, build more than a prompt: you need a model interaction loop, a small set of tools, a workspace where code can be inspected or changed, and controls for reviewing and recovering work. Start with one bounded repository task, then add capabilities only when that task needs them.
What a coding agent needs
A coding agent takes a task, decides what to do, uses tools to inspect or change code, observes the results, and continues or stops. Its answer should reflect what its tools actually did—not what the model intended to do.
- Instructions and a task contract: define the job, permitted files and commands, expected result, and when a person must review the work.
- A model interaction loop: send the task and instructions to a model, handle any requested tool calls, return their results, and continue until the agent responds or the run is stopped.
- Tools: expose only the operations the task needs, such as reading files, searching a repository, applying an edit, or running an allowed command.
- An execution context: give repository tasks an appropriately isolated workspace in which the agent can read and, if authorized, modify files and run commands.
- Control and run state: keep approval decisions, credentials, audit records, and recovery information under application control so a run can be reviewed or resumed.
Choose who runs the agent harness
Decide whether your application should own the loop and its operational responsibilities, or whether a managed harness better fits the task. These are different architectural choices, not a universal ranking.
- Code-first SDK: OpenAI describes its Agents SDK as an option when the developer’s server should own deployment, tool implementations, state, and approvals while the SDK runs the agent loop. This provides application control, with corresponding responsibility for those application concerns.
- Managed API and hosted execution: OpenAI’s Agents API quickstart demonstrates a hosted harness and sandbox for a coding assistant. This can suit a product that wants a managed execution path; confirm that its controls and execution model fit your deployment.
- Computer-like tools: Anthropic’s Claude Agent SDK article describes an agent working through computer-like tools. Its September 29, 2025 article states: “The key design principle behind the Claude Agent SDK is to give your agents a computer, allowing them to work like humans do.” That is Anthropic’s description of the design principle, not a performance claim.
Before choosing, check who owns the loop, where code executes, how tools and any MCP connections are integrated, where run state is stored, how approvals and guardrails work, whether runs can be traced and resumed, provider flexibility, operational burden, and current pricing and limits. The available descriptions establish these as relevant comparison dimensions, but do not establish a neutral winner on performance or cost.

Define a small, testable first job
Pick a task with a clear boundary, such as “inspect this repository and explain the failing test” or “make one small change, run the relevant test, and summarize the diff.” Write the contract before adding tools:
- What files may the agent read or edit?
- Which commands may it run, and which are prohibited?
- What output must it return—for example, an explanation, a diff summary, test results, or a combination?
- Which actions require human approval, and what conditions stop the run?
A narrow contract makes it easier to limit access and tell whether a run succeeded. Avoid starting with unrestricted access to the host simply because it is convenient.

Implement the tool-use loop
At a conceptual level, the loop is: ask the model what to do next; if it requests a tool, validate the request, run the permitted operation, and send the actual result back; repeat until the model returns a final answer or the application stops the run.

Include the task contract and relevant context; do not rely on an open-ended prompt to enforce application policy.
- Inspect the model response. Distinguish a final response from a request to use a tool.
- Validate each requested operation. Check that the tool exists, its inputs are valid, and the requested action is within the contract. Route actions requiring review through an approval step.
- Run the tool and capture its result. Return output such as file contents, command output, or an error to the model. Do not replace observed results with a success assumption.
- Continue or stop deliberately. Repeat the cycle while the run is permitted to continue; stop on a final answer, a policy violation, a failed condition, or a need for human review.
Keep tool inputs and outputs explicit. A small initial surface might include file reading, file listing or search, a constrained edit operation, and a command runner restricted to approved commands. Add tools only when the chosen task requires them. Anthropic’s description of coding agents covers an iterative pattern of finding files, editing, linting, running, debugging, and repeating; your tools should support the parts of that workflow your agent is actually allowed to perform.

Give repository work a safe workspace
If the agent must change code, run commands, install dependencies, or create artifacts, it needs a writable execution context. A sandbox can provide that context, particularly for multi-file work or tasks that need dependencies or resumable execution. It does not replace the application’s responsibility for policy, approvals, orchestration, and state.
- Limit workspace mounts to the repository or task files the agent needs.
- Constrain available environment variables, network access, and commands according to the deployment’s requirements.
- Keep API credentials outside the sandbox. OpenAI’s Agents API quickstart explicitly says to keep the API key outside it.
- Keep trusted control functions—such as billing, audit records, human review, and recovery state—separate from model-directed code execution where practical.
Sandbox providers and deployments differ, so verify the actual permissions and isolation in the environment where the agent will run rather than assuming that the word “sandbox” guarantees a particular boundary.

Make review and recovery part of the workflow
For consequential changes, pause for a person to inspect the proposed work before allowing it to continue. Preserve enough run state to resume after that pause, and enough trace information to understand which tools were called and what they returned. Guardrails, human review, result and state handling, and observability are capabilities to add as the workflow grows—not substitutes for a clearly bounded first task.

Evaluate it on real repository tasks
Create a small set of representative tasks and record what happened on each run. Check whether the agent:
- edited only the intended files;
- used only permitted commands and tools;
- ran the relevant checks and reported their observed outcomes accurately;
- stopped for review when the contract required it; and
- left enough information to inspect or recover the run.
There is no named, publisher-attributed performance figure or independent comparative benchmark established for this guide. Treat any success rate or other score as your own measured result only when you have run and documented the evaluation.
Expand only when the first workflow demands it
Once the narrow agent works reliably, use observed failures and new requirements to decide what to add. A second task might justify persistent state, handoffs between specialized agents, more detailed guardrails, or richer observability. Add each deliberately: define what it is allowed to do, how its behavior will be reviewed, and how a failed run will be diagnosed or resumed before granting it a larger role.
