You can build small TypeScript demonstrations of a BPE tokenizer, cosine-similarity search, and self-attention to see how text becomes token IDs, vectors are compared, and tokens combine context. These are inspectable learning primitives—not a production-compatible tokenizer, trained embedding model, retrieval-augmented generation system, or complete language model.
What the three primitives do
The stages answer different questions. Tokenization turns text into discrete IDs. A vector lookup gives those IDs numerical representations that can be compared. Attention uses token representations to compute context-dependent combinations. Building them separately makes their inputs and outputs easier to inspect than treating an LLM as one opaque operation.
- Tokenizer: maps text into subword token IDs using byte-pair encoding (BPE).
- Vector comparison: represents IDs as fixed-dimension numeric arrays and compares them with cosine similarity.
- Self-attention: scores relationships between token representations and uses the scores to weight value vectors.
The SitePoint tutorial describes its implementation as three inspectable primitives used in LLM-related workflows, not an LLM. Its code is a CPU-based learning sandbox: it does not establish production compatibility, model quality, or performance.

BPE represents text as subword units rather than requiring a separate token for every possible word. A tokenizer applies its vocabulary and merge rules to text, then returns token IDs. Those IDs are the interface to later model operations; they are not, by themselves, meaningful vector representations.
#1 Best Overall
The tutorial demonstrates BPE mechanics, but does not claim that its vocabulary, merge rules, or output match GPT-2 or any other production model tokenizer. Tokenizer compatibility depends on the specific model’s vocabulary and preprocessing conventions, not merely on using the BPE name. Treat this implementation as a way to study the mapping from text to IDs, not as a drop-in replacement for a model’s tokenizer.
Compare vectors with cosine similarity
After tokenization, the demonstration uses a toy lookup that maps token IDs to fixed-dimension Float64Array values. Cosine similarity compares the angle between two vectors, providing a simple numerical comparison mechanism.

- TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
- TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

These lookup vectors are not trained semantic embeddings. A meaningful similarity score in a toy implementation should not be interpreted as evidence that the vectors capture language meaning or behave like a learned embedding space. A training-capable system would need to learn its representations; a lookup alone only supplies values for the demonstration.
Use self-attention to combine token context
Self-attention lets each token assign scores to other tokens. It computes query-key dot products, normalizes the scores with softmax, and uses the resulting weights to combine value vectors. The output for a position therefore depends on the representations it attends to, rather than being only that position’s original vector.
For clarity, the tutorial uses the embeddings directly as queries, keys, and values: Q = K = V = embeddings. This removes learned projection layers from the example. A Transformer ordinarily applies trainable projections to produce separate query, key, and value representations before calculating attention. The simplified operation is useful for exposing the mechanics, but it is not a complete Transformer attention block.
How the demonstration differs from Transformer attention
| Dimension | Learning demonstration | More complete Transformer mechanism |
|---|---|---|
| Queries, keys, and values | Uses embeddings directly as Q, K, and V. | Uses learned projections to produce Q, K, and V. |
| Context access | Basic self-attention can compare positions without restricting access to later positions. | Causal masking blocks future positions when generating autoregressively, so a position can use only itself and earlier positions. |
| Representation space | Shows one attention operation. | Multi-head attention runs attention in parallel across multiple representational subspaces. |
| Surrounding architecture | Isolates tokenization, vector comparison, and attention. | A Transformer also uses positional information, normalization, feed-forward layers, and assembled blocks. |
This progression matters because attention is not a synonym for the whole model. Even a more complete attention mechanism is one component among several that enable a Transformer to process sequences and generate text.

TypeScript annotations help describe expected inputs, but they do not validate matrix dimensions at runtime. When a function expects compatible vector or matrix shapes, check those shapes explicitly and report a useful error instead of relying on the type system to catch malformed numeric data.
The tutorial frames its setup around Node 24.12+ and TypeScript 7.x, but those version references are time-sensitive and were not independently verified against official release documentation. Check the official Node.js and TypeScript documentation before adopting them as requirements for a new project.

What to build next
To move from a weight-free attention example toward an autoregressive Transformer, add trainable Q/K/V projections, scaling and causal masking, then implement multiple heads. Continue by adding positional information, normalization, feed-forward layers, and Transformer blocks. Each addition addresses a capability absent from the three-primitive sandbox; none alone turns the toy implementation into a trained or competitive language model.
For a deeper treatment of attention mechanisms, Manning’s Build a Large Language Model (From Scratch) develops the progression from basic self-attention through projections, causal attention, and multi-head attention, with source code and learning resources on the publisher page.
