A reliable mobile subscription system puts the access decision on your backend: the app starts a purchase through the platform’s billing flow, sends the resulting transaction data to your authenticated service, and the service verifies it with the store before granting access. Store notifications then prompt your backend to update its records, while reconciliation catches missed or delayed changes. Treating a successful client callback or a single notification as proof of ongoing access leaves the system vulnerable to stale or incorrect entitlements.
What belongs in a subscription system
Think of subscriptions as a flow of verified purchase data into a durable account and entitlement service, not as a button in the app that sets is_subscribed to true. Apple describes a server-side entitlement engine, while Google recommends managing purchase status on a secure backend. The specific database, queue, and service topology are implementation choices. Apple’s architecture session and Google’s backend guidance provide the platform context.
- App client: Fetches product details, presents the store’s purchase flow, receives transaction or purchase-token data, and sends it to your authenticated backend.
- Billing adapters: Encapsulate each store’s product identifiers, verification and query APIs, notification format, acknowledgement rules, and lifecycle semantics.
- Purchase ledger: Stores durable transaction records, provider identifiers, account associations, and status changes so decisions can be audited and reconciled.
- Notification ingress: Validates incoming store messages, records them durably, deduplicates them, and triggers current-state checks when appropriate.
- Entitlement service: Translates verified store state and your product rules into a consistent answer for apps and other services.
- Support and operations: Provides restore and account-management paths, processing visibility, and tools to investigate and replay failures.
The app should not receive a store callback and unlock premium access on that basis alone. It should submit the transaction data to the backend; the backend verifies the purchase and associates it with an app account before granting access.

1. Establish an account link
Authenticate the app account before purchase and create or retrieve a stable, opaque value for linking a store transaction to that account. Apple supports an appAccountToken UUID that can be returned in transaction information. Google supports obfuscated account identifiers for purchase association. Keep the mapping on your server; do not use an email address or other directly identifying account data as the purchase identifier. The platforms describe these mechanisms in their documentation: Apple’s appAccountToken reference and Google’s subscription lifecycle guide. Your privacy and retention policy still depends on your app’s design and jurisdiction.

2. Start the store purchase flow
Use the platform’s billing integration to fetch the product and initiate the purchase. The client sends the resulting transaction or purchase token to an authenticated backend endpoint. A client response is useful input, but it is not the final entitlement decision.
3. Verify with the relevant store
The backend checks signed transaction data or queries the store, confirms the app, product, environment, and transaction identity, and only then records a verified purchase. Apple’s App Store Server API provides signed transaction and renewal information and supports status and history queries. For Google Play, use a secure backend and the Google Play Developer API; after relevant subscription notifications, the current resource returned by purchases.subscriptionsv2.get is the state to reconcile against. Google’s backend integration guidance and lifecycle documentation describe those responsibilities.
4. Record the result before granting access
Persist the verified transaction, its store identifiers, account link, environment, product, and relevant time bounds. Then compute and return the app account’s entitlements. This order gives support staff an audit trail and gives retries a durable record to work from.
Model subscriptions as time-bounded state
A subscription changes over time. Store the verified billing period and current provider state rather than reducing the record to a boolean or the auto-renew setting. Renewal preference, payment recovery, grace, cancellation, expiration, and plan changes are distinct lifecycle facts; Apple’s billing guidance and Google’s lifecycle guide document the different states.

Keep the store’s state separate from your product policy. The store reports purchase lifecycle facts; your service decides which capabilities those facts currently permit. For example, an entitlement response can be expressed as:
{
"feature": "premium_export",
"active_from": "verified period start",
"active_until": "verified period end"
}
The example describes a shape, not a platform field or a required schema. A product can grant several capabilities, and a shared entitlement service can answer consistently across devices or app services without embedding store-specific state handling in every feature.
Handle notifications as signals, then reconcile state
Store notifications tell your system that something may have changed. They are not a substitute for durable processing or, when needed, a fresh query to the store. Use an inbox table or equivalent durable queue so a message can be recorded before processing; validate it, deduplicate it, and update the purchase ledger and entitlement decision idempotently.
Apple: use Server Notifications V2
Implement App Store Server Notifications V2. Its payload uses signed JWS data, and Apple marks V1 notifications as deprecated. Validate the signed information, persist the event and transaction data, and use the App Store Server API’s status, history, and notification-history capabilities to reconcile state or recover missed notifications within the API’s documented retention windows. See Apple’s notification receiving documentation and the App Store Server API reference.

Google Play: deduplicate RTDN and query current state
Google Real-time Developer Notifications (RTDN) are commonly delivered through Google Cloud Pub/Sub. Deduplicate messages by their messageId; after relevant state-changing notifications, call purchases.subscriptionsv2.get and reconcile against the returned subscription resource rather than treating the notification payload as a complete state snapshot. Google describes this flow in its backend integration and subscription lifecycle documentation.
Make event handling resilient
Design processing to tolerate duplicate delivery, out-of-order events, delayed work, and temporary store API failures. Persist provider identifiers, environment, and raw or normalized event data so staff can explain a decision and safely replay processing. Queue technology and retry timing are engineering choices; the important property is that a failed or repeated event does not silently corrupt access state.
Cancellation, payment recovery, and expiry are different
Cancellation generally changes renewal intent, not necessarily current access. Google says a canceled user retains access through the current billing cycle; use the subscription’s expiry time to determine when that access ends. Apple likewise distinguishes renewal behavior from the end of a paid period. Google’s lifecycle guide and Apple’s billing guidance explain the relevant transitions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Grace or billing retry: Apply your policy to the provider’s current recovery state. Apple documents retry and optional grace behavior; Google also has grace-period behavior.
- Account hold: Google says to block access during account hold and restore it after payment recovery.
- Recovery: Re-evaluate access when a payment problem is resolved; a prior grace or hold state may transition back to active.
- Expiry: Remove access when the verified paid period has ended and the provider confirms there is no active entitlement.
- Refund or revocation: Apply the current provider state and your terms rather than inferring access from the original purchase alone.
Do not equate autoRenewEnabled = false with immediate expiry. Similarly, do not treat every payment interruption as permanent loss of access: current provider state and your documented policy determine the outcome.

Keep account identity separate from store identity
A store transaction belongs to a store-side purchase identity; it is not automatically the same thing as an account in your app. Use the account-linking value submitted at purchase to associate records where available, and define how restore, account changes, family sharing, and conflicting claims should work. Apple’s appAccountToken and Google’s obfuscated account identifiers help with association, but your service still needs explicit ownership and conflict rules. Apple’s reference and Google’s lifecycle guide document the platform mechanisms.
Restore purchases and reconcile account access
Provide a restore or refresh path from app launch and account settings so a signed-in user can recover access after reinstalling or changing devices. Restoration should reconcile the app account against verified store records rather than relying on local purchase history. Apple’s server API works independently of installation status and exposes transaction history and status; Google documents recovery through the billing library and backend notifications. Apple’s API documentation and Google’s lifecycle guide cover these recovery paths.
Do not silently reassign an existing purchase whenever a different app account presents it. Define what happens when a transaction is already linked elsewhere, whether account transfer is allowed, and how users resolve a conflict. Those policies should be enforced by the backend so restore behavior cannot bypass account ownership rules.

Operate the system with an audit trail
Give support staff a way to look up a transaction and understand why an account currently has or lacks access. Record decision inputs and status transitions, limit access to sensitive fields to staff who need them, and provide retry or replay controls for failed processing. Monitor the operational signals that reveal drift between store state and app access:
- Notification delivery and processing lag.
- Store API query failures and repeated retries.
- Duplicate events and acknowledgement failures for Google purchases that require acknowledgement.
- Account-linking conflicts and restore attempts that cannot be resolved automatically.
- Entitlements that remain active after their verified expiry time.
Google documents backend purchase management, acknowledgement, and voided-purchase tools in its backend integration guidance. Apple’s Server API includes notification-history and test-notification facilities that can support reconciliation and operations.
Implementation checklist
- Define each store product’s mapping to app capabilities and the access rules for active, grace, hold, canceled, expired, revoked, paused, and pending states.
- Authenticate the app account and create an opaque association value before purchase.
- Build separate Apple and Google adapters for purchase verification, current-state queries, event validation, and acknowledgement requirements.
- Persist verified purchases and provider events with durable identifiers, account links, environment, and status history.
- Process notifications idempotently and query current store state when the event requires reconciliation.
- Calculate access from verified state and billing time bounds, not a client callback or renewal preference alone.
- Implement restore, account conflict handling, support lookup, retries, and reconciliation for missed or delayed events.
- Track processing failures and verify current API versions, notification schemas, and storefront requirements before release.
These platform-specific mechanisms and lifecycle rules are documented in Apple’s subscription billing guidance, notification documentation, and Google’s backend integration and subscription lifecycle guides.
