Use Claude Code to make focused changes in an iOS project, then use Xcode to build and inspect them. The practical loop is: understand the existing code, define one bounded outcome, review the proposed changes, build and fix issues, and iterate in Simulator. Validate hardware-dependent behavior on a physical device. Xcode’s documented MCP bridge can give Claude Code access to Xcode tools, but it is optional for ordinary file-based edits.

What you need before starting

This workflow assumes you have a Mac with Xcode and Claude Code installed and authenticated. Anthropic’s setup guide lists macOS as supported and describes installing Claude Code, authenticating, moving into the project directory, and starting it there. Installation routes and requirements can change, so consult the current Claude Code setup guide for the latest steps.

Xcode is Apple’s integrated development environment for building, testing, optimizing, and submitting apps for Apple platforms. You do not need to connect Claude Code to Xcode’s tools for every code edit: the connection is useful when you want the agent to access Xcode capabilities as part of the workflow.

Start by giving Claude Code project context

Open a terminal in the project directory and launch Claude Code there. Begin by asking it to map the relevant files and explain how the existing feature works; hold off on requesting a rewrite until you have checked that its understanding matches the project.

#1 Best Overall

For an implementation request, describe the outcome and constraints rather than asking vaguely for an improvement. Include:

  • The screen or feature to change and the behavior you expect.
  • The app target or platform context that matters.
  • Acceptance checks, such as a user action and the expected visible result.
  • Files, APIs, or architectural boundaries it should preserve or avoid.
  • Whether you want a plan first or a direct, bounded change.

For example: “Trace how the settings screen is built, then add a confirmation state when the user turns off notifications. Keep the existing navigation and persistence approach. First list the files you expect to change; do not edit until I approve the plan.” Once you have reviewed the plan, request the implementation as a separate step. Optional project guidance files such as AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md can provide continuing context, but they are not required for this workflow.

Connect Claude Code to Xcode when you need Xcode tools

Apple documents an integration path in which an external agent connects to Xcode through the Xcode-provided MCP bridge. To use that path, enable Xcode’s external-agent access, add the bridge to Claude Code, and open the project in Xcode before prompting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Allow access in Xcode. In Xcode’s Intelligence settings, enable Allow external agents to use Xcode tools.
  2. Add the Xcode MCP server in a terminal. Run Apple’s example command: claude mcp add --transport stdio xcode -- xcrun mcpbridge.
  3. Open the project in Xcode. With the project open, begin prompting Claude Code. Xcode alerts you when an external agent connects and when it is active.

See Apple’s instructions for connecting an external agent to a project for the documented steps. MCP is an integration choice, not a prerequisite for asking Claude Code to work with project files; use it when Xcode tool access is relevant to the task.

Use short implementation and review cycles

Keep the work small enough that you can understand and assess each change before moving on. A useful cycle is:

  1. Ask for a plan or file map and confirm the scope.
  2. Have Claude Code implement one bounded feature or fix.
  3. Inspect the diff for unintended edits, mismatched assumptions, or changes outside the agreed boundary.
  4. Build in Xcode and address compiler errors or test failures with focused follow-up requests.
  5. Run the app and check the behavior against your acceptance criteria before starting another change.

A successful build is not proof that the feature behaves correctly. Review the code and observe the app yourself; treat any claim that the agent built or checked something as something to verify in Xcode. Apple’s integration documents external agents’ access to Xcode capabilities, not a guarantee that generated code is correct or that every action succeeds.

Iterate in Simulator, then check device-dependent behavior on hardware

Xcode can run an app on simulated or physical devices. Simulator is useful for repeated layout and interaction checks across available device configurations. It is not a complete substitute for testing on hardware: Apple cautions that simulators “don’t replicate the performance or features of a physical device.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test on a physical device when the feature depends on hardware, when real-device performance matters, or when a capability is unavailable in Simulator. Apple notes that relevant frameworks expose APIs for detecting when a feature is unavailable in a simulator; use the appropriate framework checks when your app needs to handle that distinction.

Use Apple’s guidance on running an app on simulated or physical devices to choose the right validation environment. Simulator helps you iterate; it cannot establish how a device-only capability or real-hardware performance will behave.
