For a feature that acts when someone arrives at or leaves a place, use the phone’s geofencing API rather than repeatedly collecting location samples. Android and Apple can monitor registered regions and deliver enter-or-exit events without an app maintaining a persistent location-update loop. That can reduce unnecessary collection and power use, but it does not make geofencing instantaneous, permission-free, or guaranteed.
Geofencing and continuous tracking solve different problems
A geofence is a geographic region with a condition such as entering or leaving it. With system-managed monitoring, the app registers the region and the transition it cares about; the operating system watches for a change and delivers an event. Android’s Geofencing API sends the event through a PendingIntent, which can reach a receiver that starts background work or notifies the user. Apple’s condition monitoring likewise has iOS monitor regions and wake an app when a monitored condition changes. Apple’s region-monitoring documentation and Android’s Geofencing API guide describe these event-driven approaches.
Continuous background location updates have a different purpose: they provide successive location samples, useful when a feature needs a route, frequent position updates, or a timely response to movement between places. If the requirement is only “do something when the user arrives or leaves,” a continuing sampling loop may collect more location data and consume more power than the task requires. That is an architectural inference from platform guidance, not a measured result for a particular app.
What to choose for an arrival or departure feature
| Need | Better fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger an action on entering or leaving a defined area | System-managed geofence or region monitoring | Event delivery is controlled by the OS and can be delayed. |
| Show a route or react repeatedly as someone moves | Location updates at a frequency and accuracy suited to the feature | More frequent, more accurate, lower-latency computation generally uses more power. |
| Coordinate geofence collections or server-side geospatial workflows | Consider a managed geospatial service, such as Amazon Location Service | This is an infrastructure choice, not a substitute for deciding what the mobile app collects or what users are told. AWS documents geofences and trackers, but does not establish that a managed service is best for every app. AWS geofencing documentation. |
Android says power use depends on the requested accuracy, how frequently location is computed, and how quickly results must be delivered. Its guidance recommends using the least demanding settings that still serve the feature; when immediate response is unnecessary, accepting a longer response window can help. Android’s battery-optimization guidance explains these trade-offs. Its statement that some background-location changes can improve battery performance “up to 10 times better on some devices” is a platform-published, device-qualified claim—not a benchmark for a specific geofencing engine or a guarantee for an app.

How delayed can geofence events be?
Geofencing is not a real-time delivery contract. Android’s current guidance says background geofence transitions on Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later may be delivered every couple of minutes. Its broader timing guidance describes typical latency under two minutes, around two to three minutes under background limits, and potentially as long as six minutes after a device has been stationary for a significant period. These are documented expectations, not a guaranteed maximum or service-level agreement. Android’s Geofencing API guide.
Android also notes that event timing depends on system conditions. Accuracy may worsen when network location is unavailable, and connectivity problems can prevent alerts. If the product depends on a response that must happen within seconds, validate whether the platform’s event behavior meets that requirement; do not promise exact arrival timing based on a geofence alone.

Ordinary background location updates behave differently on Apple platforms. Apple says most apps are suspended shortly after entering the background and do not receive location updates while suspended, whereas region monitoring lets iOS monitor registered conditions and wake the app when a condition changes. See Apple’s region-monitoring documentation and its background location updates guidance. Android and iOS differ in setup, permission flows, execution, and delivery; do not promise identical timing or behavior across platforms.

- Define the product event. Specify whether the action happens on entry, exit, or both, and how quickly it must occur. If the feature needs a continuous path or frequent position changes, geofencing alone is not a replacement for location updates.
- Choose the platform mechanism. On Android, use the Geofencing API and handle the delivered event, commonly through a
PendingIntentreceiver. On Apple platforms, use Core Location region monitoring for geographic-condition changes. Follow the current platform documentation for the app’s deployment target and API details. - Request only the access the feature needs. Explain the location use before presenting a system prompt. Prefer foreground access when it can deliver the feature; if monitoring must continue while the app is not visible, explain that behavior and request the appropriate background access for the platform.
- Handle delayed or absent delivery gracefully. Treat geofence notifications as OS-managed events, not a precise timer. Design the user experience so a delayed alert does not create a safety-critical or misleading promise.
- Stop monitoring when it is no longer useful. Remove regions when a user disables the feature or the relevant task ends. Android specifically notes that stopping geofence monitoring can save battery power and CPU cycles. Android’s Geofencing API guide.
Permissions and disclosure are part of the design
A geofence operating while the app is not visible still uses location in the background. Android advises that this access should support core functionality, provide clear user benefit, and be obvious to users. Its guidance says to request only permission critical to a user-facing feature and to disclose the use. Android’s location-permission guide.

Google Play separately reviews apps that request background location. Its policy says background access should be required for core functionality and provide significant benefit; foreground access is preferred if it can provide the feature. The review process includes a permissions declaration and asks for a demonstration, prominent in-app disclosure, and a privacy policy. Requests solely for advertising will be denied. Policies can change, so check the live Google Play background-location policy before release.
Apple documents region monitoring among the services available with When In Use authorization and notes its better privacy and battery implications compared with broader access. Authorization behavior and requirements can evolve, so confirm the current flow for the app’s deployment target in Apple’s location authorization documentation.

Why not keep a location loop running?
For arrival-and-departure behavior, persistent background sampling solves a broader problem than necessary: it repeatedly asks for positions even when the app only needs to know whether a region condition changed. System-managed monitoring aligns collection more closely with that event and leaves scheduling and delivery to the platform. It is not “free” or perfectly reliable: permissions still matter, and event timing and accuracy depend on device and system conditions. Use continuous updates when the feature genuinely needs them, not as the default implementation for a geofence.
