Start by defining the task and what a successful answer must contain. Then give the model only the relevant information, organized by role, and use retrieval or tools when the task needs changing external knowledge or an action. Test each revision on representative cases rather than assuming that more context—or a shorter prompt—will work better.

What context engineering means in practice

Context engineering is a way to design the information surrounding a model request: what the model is asked to do, what source material or current state it receives, what constraints apply, and what output is expected. It is not a formal OpenAI definition or a guarantee of better results. The useful question is whether each piece of information helps the model complete this particular task.

A Product Hunt discussion by Ashok Nayak frames the challenge as organizing the surrounding information rather than focusing only on the prompt. Participants recommend trimming duplication, filtering irrelevant material, structuring what remains, and breaking complex work into subtasks. Those are practitioner heuristics, not findings from a controlled study; validate them in your own workflow. Read the discussion on Product Hunt.

How to decide what belongs in the context

1. Define the task and success criteria

Write down what the user needs, what the response should look like, and any constraints such as required sources, format, or prohibited actions. Make success observable: for example, whether the answer identifies the requested fields, follows a required structure, or uses only supplied source material.

2. Gather candidate information, then filter it

Keep information that could change the answer, help resolve ambiguity, or enforce a necessary constraint. Remove unrelated background, repeated instructions, and details the model can safely infer. Do not discard information just because it is long: a lengthy source document may be essential, while a short irrelevant note is still noise.

For each candidate item, ask: if this were removed, could the answer become less correct, less complete, or less compliant? If not, it may not need to be in the request. This is a practical screening question, not a universal rule.

3. Make each retained item’s role clear

Separate instructions from source material, current state, and output requirements. Use labels or sections so the model can distinguish what it must follow from what it should analyze. Avoid conflicting or duplicated directions; if sources disagree, state which source takes precedence or ask the model to report the conflict.

4. Split work when one request combines distinct jobs

If a workflow requires several different tasks—such as extracting facts, checking them against a policy, and formatting a final response—consider separate steps with explicit inputs and outputs. Keep a step together when its subparts depend on one another. Splitting is an option to test, not a guaranteed improvement.

When to use direct context, retrieval, or tools

OpenAI’s developer quickstart shows that requests can include text, images, and files, and can be extended with built-in tools or custom integrations. The right choice depends on the application; the available documentation does not establish one approach as universally better. See the OpenAI developer quickstart.

Provide information directly when it is bounded and already available

Direct context is a straightforward choice when the relevant material is known, manageable, and stable for the request. Include the parts needed to answer, and identify their source or status when that matters. If the material is too large to include reliably, or varies from one request to another, consider retrieval instead.

Use retrieval or file search for larger or changing knowledge

Retrieval can select material relevant to an individual task from a larger collection. It is worth considering when the application needs information that changes or cannot reasonably be placed in every request. Its usefulness depends on whether the system finds the right material; test retrieval relevance and the final answer together rather than assuming that adding search solves omissions.

Use tools when the workflow needs external information or an action

OpenAI documents built-in options such as web search and file search, as well as integrations including function calling and remote MCP. A tool may be appropriate when the model needs information from an external source or must invoke an application function. A tool call adds an integration and may introduce additional processing or round trips, so compare it against the needs of the task. Review the current quickstart for supported examples.

Compare approaches against the application’s constraints

  • Freshness: Does the answer depend on information that changes?
  • Relevance: Can the system reliably select the right source material for each request?
  • Latency and cost: What processing or extra tool round trips does the approach add?
  • Maintenance: What indexing, integration, updating, and monitoring will it require?
  • Privacy: What data is sent to the model or another service, and how is it handled?

These are decision criteria, not measured trade-offs or a product ranking. The answer will depend on the workflow and its constraints.

How to test whether a context change helps

Prepare representative inputs before changing the workflow. Include ordinary cases and difficult ones, such as ambiguous requests, missing information, conflicting source material, or content that should be excluded. Keep the inputs and success criteria fixed while comparing versions so a change can be judged against the same tasks.

  1. Record the current context and the outputs it produces on the test cases.
  2. Change one meaningful element at a time, such as removing duplicated instructions, reorganizing sections, or changing how material is retrieved.
  3. Compare outputs against the criteria that matter for the application: task completion, factual accuracy, completeness, or constraint-following.
  4. Inspect failures as well as successes. Identify whether the cause was missing context, poor retrieval, unclear instructions, or another part of the workflow.
  5. Keep a change only when it improves the results that matter without creating unacceptable regressions.

OpenAI provides an Evals API surface, but the cited reference does not prescribe a complete evaluation method for context engineering. The evaluation criteria and test cases should reflect the application. OpenAI Evals API reference.

Check model limits and data handling before deployment

Model capabilities, supported tools, and context limits vary by model and can change. Consult the current OpenAI models documentation when selecting a model or designing request size; do not rely on an old limit copied from an earlier implementation.

Data handling also depends on the endpoint, configuration, and features in use. OpenAI’s data-controls documentation says Responses API state may be retained for at least 30 days when the relevant storage behavior applies; approved Zero Data Retention settings alter some behavior. Background mode, prompt caching, and third-party MCP services can have separate considerations. Check the current documentation and the account configuration for the specific deployment before sending sensitive information. Review OpenAI data controls.
