Use Android geofences as low-power entry and exit triggers, not as a promise of instant boundary detection or a continuous GPS tracker. Register only places relevant to the user; when a transition arrives, request more precise fused-location updates only if the feature needs them, and stop those updates when they are no longer useful.

Design geofencing as a staged background service

Android’s Geofencing API is built on the Fused Location Provider and is optimized for battery performance. That makes it a better fit for questions such as “Has the user arrived near this place?” than a loop that repeatedly requests high-accuracy GPS fixes while the app is in the background. The API reports region transitions; it does not continuously observe a device crossing an exact line. Android’s background-location and battery guidance explains the API’s battery-oriented design.

  1. Keep a desired set of regions. Track the places the app currently intends to monitor independently of the platform registrations. Register only relevant places and reconcile the platform set with that desired state when the app’s data or lifecycle changes.
  2. Use transitions to trigger work. On entry, notify or update the feature. If the user experience needs finer location detail than a region transition provides, start fused-location updates for that active window rather than keeping them running continuously.
  3. Stop precise updates when they are no longer needed. On exit, or when the feature’s active window ends, remove the updates. Choose a sensible request duration so an interrupted flow does not leave high-cost work active indefinitely.
  4. Make event handling resilient to delay. Treat a transition as a delayed signal that a region state may have changed, not as a timestamped record of the exact moment the boundary was crossed. Design notifications and state changes so that a late event remains useful.

This staged pattern separates broad, low-power place awareness from precise location work. It is useful for “near home,” “near work,” or nearby-store features, but the product should not describe it as continuous tracking or guarantee that an alert appears at the boundary.

What Android’s timing and scale guidance means

Background limits affect how quickly a geofence can be detected. Android’s figures are platform guidance, not measurements of a particular app or a guarantee for an individual phone. The cited guidance pages do not state publication dates, so verify the current documentation when making release decisions.

Decision or constraint Android guidance What to design for
Background update cadence Since Android 8.0 (API 26), background location updates are limited to a few times per hour. Android describes geofence responsiveness as approximately two minutes in its battery guidance, and about two to three minutes on average under background limits; after significant stationary time, latency can reach six minutes. Battery guidance and Background Location Limits. Allow minutes of delay. Do not promise that a short responsiveness setting produces an alert within that number of seconds.
Geofence radius Android recommends a minimum radius of about 100–150 meters for best results. With Wi-Fi, typical location accuracy is described as 20–50 meters; without it, accuracy can degrade to hundreds of meters or several kilometers in some conditions. Create and monitor geofences. Match the radius to the user’s meaningful arrival area and real positioning conditions; a very small region is not automatically more useful.
Registered regions An app can register up to 100 geofences. Create and monitor geofences. For a larger catalog, stage registrations: monitor a broader region, then load nearby smaller regions as they become relevant.
Responsiveness versus power Android recommends a geofence responsiveness setting of five minutes or greater to preserve power. Some scenario guidance suggests around ten minutes where additional delay is acceptable. Battery guidance and Real-world location scenarios. Choose the longest delay the feature can tolerate. Use an urgent experience only when its user value justifies the added power and permission cost.

These constraints make geofencing a poor substitute for real-time safety monitoring or any feature that must detect a crossing immediately. Network availability, Wi-Fi settings, device differences, region size, and how long a device has been stationary can all affect delivery. Android notes that geofence service relies on the network location provider, so an alert may be less reliable when connectivity or Wi-Fi-assisted positioning is unavailable.

Choose accuracy, sampling, and batching deliberately

Location power use depends on requested accuracy, how often fixes are requested, and how quickly results must be delivered. Start with balanced or low-power settings when they meet the feature requirement. Sustained high-accuracy updates cost more; keep them limited to periods when the user’s action genuinely needs that precision. See Android’s guidance on accessing location in the background.

  • 📍 Accurate & Reliable Location – Powered by Apple Find My Network This tracker uses Google's Find Hub network for location tracking, leveraging a global network of hundreds of millions of Apple devices to deliver fast and precise location updates. Whether you're tracking a vehicle, valuable items, or ensuring the safety of loved ones, you can rely on its stability and accuracy within the Apple ecosystem.

For non-foreground location updates, request the largest workable interval and allow batching by setting a maximum update delay to a multiple of that interval. Android gives an illustrative example of computing roughly every ten minutes and delivering a batch around every hour. Those values describe an API example, not a guaranteed schedule or a benchmark for your app. Batching is appropriate when the product can act on delayed grouped results; it is not appropriate when each fix must prompt an immediate response.

Make the place catalog fit the 100-region limit

When the user has more saved places than can be registered at once, do not attempt to register the whole catalog. Keep a durable list of intended regions in app state and choose a relevant subset for platform registration. For a broad geographic footprint, a larger outer geofence can act as a discovery trigger: when entered, register smaller geofences for nearby targets; when exited, retire those local registrations. Android describes this staged approach in its location-use scenarios.

This arrangement trades some discovery delay for fewer active regions and less unnecessary monitoring. Select the outer region and local targets according to how the product defines “nearby”; Android’s limit does not determine the correct geography for an individual app.

Request background permission only when the feature needs it

For Android 10 (API 29) and later, background geofencing requires background location permission. If the feature must work while the app is not in use, explain why location is core to that behavior and what the user gets from allowing background access. Make background behavior visible in the product experience rather than asking for broad access without context. Android’s geofencing guidance covers permission considerations.

Clean up and recover registrations

Remove location updates after their active window, and give geofences sensible expiration behavior rather than leaving obsolete registrations in place. Keep the desired region set so the app can rebuild registrations if they are lost. Android says some Play services upgrades and system-managed restarts restore registrations automatically, but re-registration is needed after events such as reboot, reinstall, app-data clearing, Play services data clearing, or a GEOFENCE_NOT_AVAILABLE error. Consult Android’s geofence documentation when implementing registration and recovery.

On recovery, reconcile the stored desired set with the registrations the app can rely on instead of assuming every prior registration remains active. This makes registration a recoverable state-management task, not a one-time setup call.

Validate the product trade-offs on real devices

Before committing to a design, decide what delay users will tolerate, what radius is meaningful, how many places and how dense a place catalog will be, and how much permission friction the feature can justify. Then test representative devices and location settings, including Wi-Fi availability and periods when a device remains stationary. Platform documentation provides useful expectations, but it does not establish battery drain or accuracy for your app; do not turn its figures into app-specific promises without testing.
