To inventory Configuration Manager servers with Distribution Point (DP), Management Point (MP), and Software Update Point (SUP) roles, start with the documented site-database views: use v_R_System for discovered server identity and v_RA_System_SystemRoles for role associations, joined by ResourceID. Microsoft documents those sources and the join key, but not one universal query with stable role labels and columns for every release. Validate the target site’s schema before treating a query as production-ready.
Choose what the report should answer
A server-and-roles inventory is not the same as a report on role configuration, content distribution, or update health. Decide the scope before building the dataset.
| Report scope | What it shows | Useful data source |
|---|---|---|
| Role membership | Which discovered servers are associated with site system roles | v_R_System and v_RA_System_SystemRoles, joined on ResourceID. Microsoft Learn: Discovery views in Configuration Manager |
| DP-specific inventory | Distribution point information, including host server and site code | v_ContentDistributionReport. Check the target database for its available columns. Microsoft Learn: Content management views in Configuration Manager |
| SUP membership | Whether a server has the software update point role | Role association data. A SUP integrates with WSUS to provide software updates to Configuration Manager clients. Microsoft Learn: Plan site system roles in Configuration Manager |
| Update information or status | Update metadata, deployments, or client status, depending on the question | Software updates views, such as v_UpdateCIs and v_UpdateInfo, commonly related by CI_ID; live status may require additional status views. Microsoft Learn: Software updates views in Configuration Manager |
For a compact infrastructure inventory, use one row per server with separate role columns. For troubleshooting or role-by-role filtering, one row per server-role association may be more useful. Those are layout choices, not a prescribed Microsoft report format.

Understand the view and join logic
Start with discovered system identity
v_R_System contains discovered system information. Microsoft documents joining it to other system-related views through ResourceID. Choose the identity fields needed by the audience, and confirm their names and availability in the site’s database rather than assuming a particular query projection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect role associations to servers
v_RA_System_SystemRoles associates resources with site system roles and is also joined using ResourceID. A resource with multiple roles can produce multiple role-association records. If the report requires one row per server, aggregate or pivot role values intentionally; otherwise, duplicates may be legitimate server-role rows rather than duplicate machines.
Validate role values and view columns locally
Microsoft’s documentation establishes the role-association view and join key, but does not define a universal production query or guarantee that role-value labels are identical for every installed release. Use the Configuration Manager schema-view documentation and inspect the target database’s view definitions and columns before writing filters or presenting a runnable dataset. - What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Do not infer private table structure when documented views are available. A schema check should confirm the needed identity columns, role representation, and any DP-specific fields for the deployment being reported.
Add detail without confusing inventory with health
Distribution point details
v_ContentDistributionReport is documented as providing distribution point information, including the host server and site code. Use it when those DP-specific details are needed, and validate its columns in the target environment. A report that shows a DP role exists does not, by itself, describe content distribution status; add the relevant operational data only when that is an explicit requirement.

Software update point and update data
A SUP is a site system role that integrates with WSUS for update delivery. Its presence on a server does not establish whether clients are compliant or whether deployments are healthy. For update metadata, Microsoft describes the software updates view family, including v_UpdateCIs and v_UpdateInfo; these are commonly joined using CI_ID. Reporting current or live status can require additional status views and a different report design.
Operating system enrichment
If the inventory needs operating system details, Microsoft’s report-model example uses v_R_System with v_GS_OPERATING_SYSTEM, joined on ResourceID. Confirm the fields and their presence in the target database before adding them to a SQL dataset. Build and publish the report
Choose SQL-based or model-based authoring
A SQL-based report uses a SQL statement to retrieve the requested data. A model-based report lets the author select fields from a report model. Prefer the approach that fits the maintained dataset and the team’s reporting workflow; the available documentation does not prescribe one format for every server-role inventory. Configuration Manager reporting uses SQL Server Reporting Services through a reporting services point, with reporting support at primary sites and the central administration site. Confirm platform support and reporting services point configuration for the target environment. Microsoft Learn: Operations and maintenance for reporting in Configuration Manager Microsoft Learn: Plan for reporting in Configuration Manager
Check permissions and test as the audience
- Confirm the reporting setup: verify that the target site has a configured reporting services point and that the selected site and platform are supported.
- Validate the dataset: inspect documented views and columns in the target site database, confirm joins, then check whether multi-role servers render as intended.
- Authorize report creation: the author needs Site Modify permission and Modify Report permission for the destination folder.
- Test with the intended audience’s access: Configuration Manager applies role-based filtering to report data, so an administrator’s output may differ from a report user’s output.
- Protect custom work: if changing predefined reports, keep a backup of custom reports before installing a site update.

Practical design checklist
- State whether the output is role membership, DP details, update metadata, or operational status.
- Decide whether each row represents a server or a server-role association.
- Use documented views and join on
ResourceIDfor system identity and role associations. - Inspect the actual site’s schema for column names and role-value labels before finalizing SQL.
- Keep role presence separate from content distribution and software update health.
- Check permissions and report results using the access context of the people who will run it.
