Look up WordNet definitions, parts of speech, synonyms, spelling suggestions, and a local search history from a terminal without needing a browser during normal use. The key condition is setup: install the Python interpreter, packages, and NLTK’s WordNet data while you have network access, then verify the lookup with the network disabled. This creates a WordNet-backed lexical lookup tool—not a complete general-purpose dictionary.
What this terminal dictionary can—and cannot—do
NLTK provides access to lexical resources such as WordNet, along with tools for working with human-language data. Its documentation describes NLTK as “a leading platform for building Python programs to work with human language data.” WordNet is the source of the lexical entries and relations in this project; it should not be presented as a comprehensive dictionary, an authority on usage, or proof that every English word will be covered.
The proposed application can show definitions, parts of speech, synonyms, and spelling suggestions, and can save searches locally. Those are design goals, not independently measured performance or completeness claims. For broader headword coverage or usage information, you would need to add and license a suitable dictionary corpus.
Prepare the project before going offline
uv’s project workflow manages dependencies in pyproject.toml, supports project creation, and runs project commands with uv run. Its Python tools may download an interpreter if the required version is not installed. Separately, NLTK needs its data resources available locally. Therefore, “offline” describes lookup after provisioning; a clean first-time installation may need internet access.

- Create a uv project. Choose a Python version compatible with your selected NLTK release, declare the dependencies in
pyproject.toml, and keep the project lockfile where appropriate. Useuv runto execute commands in the managed environment. - Install the runtime and packages while connected. If the Python interpreter or packages are not already cached, setup may require downloads. Do not assume uv makes a fresh project install offline.
- Acquire NLTK data deliberately. The tutorial’s example calls
nltk.downloadfor WordNet resources at startup. Instead, make data installation an explicit setup step or clearly documented first-run action, rather than silently ignoring a download failure. Consult the NLTK data installation guide for the resources your code uses and how to place them in a local data directory. - Verify a real lookup without network access. After installing the interpreter, packages, and data, disconnect from the network and run a representative lookup. This catches missing corpora that a connected startup might otherwise download automatically.
The NLTK installation guidance lists Python 3.9 through 3.13. Compatibility guidance can change, so check that page when choosing a version rather than treating the listed range as permanent.
Design the lookup and history data
Keep the responsibilities separate: query WordNet for lexical results, format those results for the terminal, and persist the lookup and its returned entries in SQLite. SQLite suits a compact local history database, but its declared column types alone do not enforce strict typing. Define keys and constraints intentionally, and validate application inputs as well.

Use separate rows for searches and results
A normalized schema can store one search record and zero or more result records for it. Useful search fields include the entered text, normalized lookup text, timestamp, and found/not-found status. Result rows can hold the part of speech, definition, and a source identifier such as the WordNet synset identifier, with separate lemma rows if you need to preserve individual synonyms. This is more useful than placing multiple synonyms in one comma-joined field.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse primary keys, foreign keys, and NOT NULL constraints where they match the model. SQLite supports these constraints; they help preserve relationships and prevent required fields from being omitted. For a search with several results, an explicit transaction can group the history and result writes so they succeed or fail together. SQLite also begins transactions automatically for database commands when needed.

Bind every user-supplied value
Pass lookup text and other user input as SQL parameters. Never build a query by inserting the input into SQL text. Parameter binding separates values from SQL syntax and avoids treating a search string as executable SQL. See the Python sqlite3 documentation on placeholders.
Present results and handle misses
Format each WordNet entry so the reader can distinguish its definition, part of speech, and related lemmas. A word may have multiple senses, so avoid presenting a single result as the definitive meaning without context. Record a not-found lookup as a valid history event rather than confusing it with a database or corpus error.

For spelling suggestions, Python’s difflib can provide a local candidate aid based on available words. Treat suggestions as hints, not proof that a term is misspelled or that the closest candidate is correct. Rich can optionally improve terminal presentation; neither Rich nor difflib is required for WordNet lookup, and no speed or usability benchmark is established for this design.

Check the offline boundary and common failures
- A lookup works online but fails offline: the program may be trying to download missing NLTK data during startup. Install the required resources into a local data path before disconnecting, then repeat the lookup offline.
- The interpreter or dependency install requires a connection: prepare the Python interpreter and packages before travel or deployment to a disconnected machine. uv can download a missing interpreter, and package installation may also need access to package sources.
- A word returns no result: distinguish “no matching WordNet entry” from a missing corpus or other runtime error. The former is a lexical-data outcome; the latter indicates setup or execution needs attention.
- History rows or result records are inconsistent: use foreign keys and appropriate constraints, and group related multi-row writes in a transaction.
- Terminal output is hard to scan: separate senses and parts of speech clearly; keep a plain-text path available if you add optional rich formatting.
Do not describe the application as “100% offline” without qualification: its runtime can operate offline after the interpreter, dependencies, and WordNet data are provisioned, but a clean setup may involve downloads. The source tutorial proposes the feature set, but its displayed excerpt includes a startup download and an incomplete-looking, misindented code section; treat it as an idea source rather than copy-ready implementation code.
