A 100% offline hostel-slang translator for Infosys Mysore is a plausible Android project, not a verified Infosys app or approved campus tool. Android documents on-device text recognition, language identification and translation, but those capabilities do not automatically understand local slang. A credible prototype would prepare its models before going offline, keep slang interpretation separate from ordinary translation, and prove every promised feature works with connectivity disabled.
What this project would—and would not—do
The idea is to help a trainee understand an unfamiliar phrase without sending the conversation to a cloud service. “Offline” needs a precise definition: the app may need to download language or AI models during setup, but its supported functions should work afterward without network access. A strict offline design must not quietly switch to a remote service when a local model is missing or fails.
This is a proposed project for a training-campus context. No campus-specific slang model, official slang lexicon, or deployed Infosys translator is established here. The word “Infosys” in the project title describes the setting, not sponsorship, endorsement, or authorization.
Infosys’s official video listing describes Mysore as a large training facility and its indexed description says it can train 16,000 people at once; the listing’s year is not stated, and the page could not be opened during research. That figure should not be read as current occupancy. An official Infosys story describes trainees making friends and adapting to life at the campus, but its account of COVID-era evacuation and virtual training is historical, not a guide to current operations.

Questions in trainee discussions about hostels, weekend activities, restrictions, and security can help identify what newcomers want to understand. They are user-generated discussions, not official policy. The translator should not label a phrase or user post as a campus rule; users should confirm current rules through official channels.
Why translating slang is harder than translating a sentence
Ordinary translation handles language, not local meaning
A translation engine can map words and phrases between supported languages. Language identification can help determine what language a text resembles. Neither step establishes that the system knows a term’s meaning in a particular hostel, batch, friend group, or moment. A phrase may be literal in one context, joking in another, or carry a meaning that is not obvious from its individual words.
Android’s ML Kit and CameraX codelab demonstrates a camera-to-text workflow that combines on-device text recognition, language identification, and translation. It also shows translation models being obtained through downloadModelIfNeeded() before translation proceeds. The codelab was last updated June 17, 2020, so it demonstrates the general workflow rather than current dependency versions or a campus slang solution.
Local slang needs its own evidence
A slang layer needs definitions and examples grounded in how people actually use a phrase. A generic translation API cannot be treated as proof of campus coverage. Nor should one person’s wording be presented as representative of all trainees, or of Indian English, Kannada, Hindi, or another language community.
For an initial version, a small, curated glossary is easier to inspect and correct than an open-ended model. Each entry can offer a likely meaning, the context in which it was contributed, and a confidence or ambiguity note. If the available examples do not support a reliable interpretation, the app should say that it is uncertain rather than inventing a confident answer.

Choose a narrow first version
Start by deciding exactly what users can submit and what the app promises to return. Keeping the first release narrow makes it possible to evaluate both offline behavior and interpretation quality.
- Input: Choose text entry, camera text capture, or both. Camera recognition adds an optical-text step and should be evaluated separately from translation.
- Language pairs: Name the source and target languages the prototype will support. Do not imply broad multilingual coverage before testing those pairs on the intended devices.
- Output: Separate a literal translation from a possible slang explanation. Include an “uncertain” result when the phrase has multiple plausible meanings or is absent from the glossary.
- Scope: Treat hostel slang as a community-language aid, not a rulebook, security guide, or authoritative source of campus information.
Build the on-device pipeline
- Define the user flow and language pairs. Decide whether the first build accepts typed text, camera-captured text, or both. Write down the supported language pairs and what a result should look like, including how the app handles unrecognized phrases.
- Implement ordinary recognition and translation locally. Android’s documented ML Kit and CameraX example provides a reference for on-device text recognition, language identification, and translation. Its translation model may need to be downloaded before use; prepare required models while the device has connectivity and provide a clear setup state if one is unavailable.
- Add slang interpretation as a distinct layer. Begin with an opt-in, locally stored glossary if the project’s contributors can curate appropriate entries. For a custom model, Android’s LiteRT documentation describes a route for deploying custom machine-learning features in Android apps, including hardware acceleration options. That makes it a path to investigate, not evidence that a suitable slang model exists or will perform well.
- Decide whether any generative feature is genuinely needed. Android documents Gemini Nano for some network-free generative AI on supported devices. Availability depends on device and feature support. A hybrid inference setup can be configured for on-device-only execution; for a strict offline promise, do not permit cloud fallback.
- Make setup and model state visible. Tell users which language and slang resources are installed, which functions are available offline, and what to do if a required model is missing. Do not present a feature as offline-ready merely because the app itself has launched without a connection before.
Compare implementation choices before committing
These are design options, not measured results. The best fit depends on the target phones, language pairs, available contributors, and how much interpretation the project needs.
| Approach | Offline completeness | Slang coverage | Device and maintenance considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-device translation plus curated glossary | Can work offline after the required translation models and glossary are available locally; verify cold starts and missing-model behavior. | Limited to entries that contributors have reviewed; ambiguous or new phrases need an uncertainty path. | Requires storage for local resources and a process for correcting and updating entries. Actual language support and performance depend on the chosen implementation and devices. |
| Custom local model deployed with LiteRT | Can be designed for local inference, but model availability and every supported flow still need offline testing. | Depends on the quality, scope, and evaluation of its training or reference data; no Mysore-specific model is established. | Android documents LiteRT deployment and hardware acceleration options. Device compatibility, latency, battery use, model size, and update method need evaluation on the intended phones. |
| Gemini Nano or hybrid inference constrained to the device | Android documents network-free generative features on supported devices and a hybrid mode configurable for on-device-only execution; availability is device- and feature-dependent. | Generative output is not evidence of accurate campus slang. Test it against reviewed examples and allow it to abstain. | Support varies by device and feature. Enforce on-device-only behavior where required and confirm it does not fall back to a network service. |
Test what “100% offline” means
An offline claim should apply to a defined set of features, languages, and supported devices—not to every Android phone or every phrase. Test a release candidate on each intended device after setup, with Wi-Fi and mobile data disabled. Include first launch without connectivity, not just a repeat run after the models have already been loaded.
- Model readiness: Confirm the required language models and local slang data are installed. Check the app’s behavior when a model was never downloaded, has been removed, or is unavailable.
- Cold start: Force-stop or restart the app, keep the device offline, and test each advertised flow. Verify that a previous online session is not masking a missing local dependency.
- Input coverage: Test typed text and camera capture separately if both are supported, including cases where language identification is uncertain or recognition produces incomplete text.
- Network fallback: Confirm that translation or generative inference cannot send text to a cloud service. A failed local request should produce a clear local error or uncertainty message, not an undisclosed remote request.
- Data handling: Check whether entered text, camera results, corrections, and glossary contributions persist. Verify the deletion controls and what happens when a user clears local data.
- Device limits: Record the tested device and feature combination, then assess storage, responsiveness, battery impact, and update behavior. Documentation that a feature exists does not establish support on every handset.
No accuracy, latency, battery, or compatibility results are established for this proposed translator. Those claims should be made only after testing the actual build on named devices with defined examples and conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect conversations and contributors
Slang examples can expose personal relationships, health concerns, attendance, workplace matters, or other sensitive details even when a contributor does not intend to share them. A demo should not be populated with real trainee conversations without informed consent and appropriate authorization. Prefer fictional examples or carefully reviewed, consented contributions that do not identify people.

Infosys’s FY2025–26 ESG privacy report says the company applies privacy-by-design practices and conducts privacy impact assessments for generative AI deployments involving personal data. It states: “We believe that privacy should be integrated at the design stage of any process or application that handles personal data.” This is context for cautious design, not approval of this project.

Infosys’s privacy statement lists employee information categories that can include personal, work, digital-access, health-and-safety, and attendance information, and says a detailed employee privacy notice is provided at onboarding. A responsible prototype should therefore:
- avoid collecting identifying conversations by default and explain plainly what the app stores;
- keep examples on the device unless a separately authorized, consented contribution process is deliberately designed;
- let users inspect and delete entries they have added;
- avoid using personal or workplace conversations as training data without clear consent and appropriate authorization; and
- separate language interpretation from claims about official campus rules.
What a credible project deliverable looks like
A useful demonstration is not just a screen that returns a plausible translation. It should show the selected language pairs, the difference between literal translation and slang explanation, the local resources needed, and how it behaves when a phrase is unknown. Its documentation should state the tested devices and the exact functions that worked with connectivity off.
For a campus-focused version, contributors who understand the relevant usage should review glossary meanings and examples, with consent and a way to correct or remove entries. A prototype can then be evaluated on a reviewed set of phrases without claiming that a small set represents every trainee or every hostel community. Until that work is done, the project is best described as an offline-capable translation experiment with a locally curated slang layer—not a reliable decoder of all Infosys Mysore hostel language.
