Build a small, dependable HTTP status reference by bundling a dated data snapshot from the IANA registry, explaining each entry using RFC 9110, and precaching the app shell and data with a service worker. That lets people search without making a network request for every lookup—and, after the app has loaded and its resources are cached, consult the reference offline. The trade-off is freshness: offline data is a snapshot, not a live registry.
Start with authoritative sources and a dated snapshot
Use the IANA HTTP Status Code Registry to determine which numbers are registered, how entries are labeled, and which references apply. Use RFC 9110 for the normative semantics of HTTP responses. MDN’s status reference is useful for accessible explanations and examples, but it is not the registry or the specification.
Store the records in a local structured file, such as JSON. For each entry, include the numeric code, short description, class, registry status, applicable standards reference, a concise explanation, and a link to the IANA entry or relevant RFC. Add a “last checked” date to the dataset and show it in the interface. Keep registry status distinct from semantics: an entry can be registered, temporary, unassigned, or marked otherwise, and those labels should not be collapsed into a generic “valid” or “invalid.”

The IANA page consulted for this article reported a last update of 2025-09-15; that is a snapshot date, not a guarantee that every entry remains unchanged. Refresh the registry and dataset before publishing a new release. For example, that snapshot listed code 104, “Upload Resumption Supported,” as temporary, registered on 2024-11-13 and expiring on 2026-11-13. Do not label it permanent or assume its status after the displayed expiry without checking the current registry.

Model the five classes without implying every number is assigned
HTTP status codes are three-digit values from 100 through 599. Their first digit identifies the class:
| Class | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1xx | Informational |
| 2xx | Successful |
| 3xx | Redirection |
| 4xx | Client error |
| 5xx | Server error |
These class labels are a useful first answer, not a complete account of what a response means. RFC 9110 explains that a status code describes the result of a request and response semantics, including whether the request succeeded and what content is enclosed. Link each record to the applicable specification rather than relying on the short reason phrase alone.
Do not generate 500 records and present them all as standard codes. IANA marks unassigned gaps, and the registry distinguishes entries with other statuses. The snapshot consulted marked 306 unused, 418 unused in the registry/RFC context, and 510 obsoleted. Recheck these mutable details against IANA when you refresh the dataset. A server-specific or unregistered code should not be presented as an IANA standard entry.
Design the lookup around the questions people actually ask
A useful first version needs no elaborate platform. Keep the data local and make the most common lookup paths obvious:
- Exact-code search: put a prominent field at the top of the page so a reader can enter a code such as 404 directly.
- Class filters: provide filters for 1xx through 5xx to browse related entries.
- Browsable list: show registered entries with their codes and short descriptions, while clearly distinguishing unassigned and specially marked records.
- Detail view: display the explanation, registry status, snapshot date, and links to the relevant IANA entry or RFC.
- Clear input handling: explain when input is incomplete or outside the 100–599 range instead of returning a misleading match.
Give unfamiliar but syntactically valid codes a useful fallback. RFC 9110 says a client must understand the class of an unknown valid status code and treat it as equivalent to the x00 code of that class. Your tool can show the class-level meaning and point to the specification, while making clear that it has no registered entry for that exact number. That prevents a guessed description from looking authoritative.
Keep the interface lightweight: make keyboard focus visible, support keyboard use, and avoid dependencies that do not serve the lookup. Bundling this finite reference dataset avoids a network request for every search. That is a design choice, not a measured claim that the app is faster by a particular percentage.

Make the app shell and data available offline
A service worker can cache the application’s resources during installation and return cached responses when the browser later requests them. For a small reference tool, precache the HTML shell, CSS, JavaScript, icons, and bundled status-code data. Service workers require a secure context, such as HTTPS. See MDN’s service-worker guide for the install, cache, and fetch lifecycle.

- During installation, cache the app shell and data. Include the files needed to render the interface and perform local searches, not only the page markup.
- On fetch, serve cached app resources. The bundled data should be available to the lookup code without a live registry connection.
- Version the cache. When app assets or data change, use a new cache version and remove obsolete versions during service-worker activation.
- Expose the data date. Show the snapshot date in the app so users can judge whether an offline result may need verification.
Offline availability begins only after the app has been loaded and its resources have been cached successfully. It does not mean a first-time visitor with no connection can fetch the tool, and it does not mean the registry has been synchronized recently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Explain differences that a short phrase can hide
Use examples to show why a code reference needs more than a phrase-to-number list. MDN’s explanations distinguish 401, which indicates that authentication is required, from 403, where the server refuses access. They also distinguish 302 from 307: a 307 redirect preserves the request method. Link readers to RFC 9110 for normative wording and to the relevant reference entry for a concise explanation.
Keep explanations brief, but do not overstate what a code alone tells a developer. The status code describes response semantics; understanding a specific failure may also require the response headers, body, request context, and applicable protocol rules. A reference tool should clarify the code and provide paths to authoritative material, not imply it diagnoses an entire exchange.
Choose between a fixed snapshot and live updates
For a static reference, a bundled dataset plus cached app shell is the clearest starting point: lookup works from local resources once cached, while the displayed date tells users how old the dataset may be. If you later add live refresh, keep updating separate from lookup. Serve the current local data immediately, then refresh when online and show when that data was checked. This avoids making the basic lookup depend on a successful registry request while acknowledging that a snapshot can age.

There is no measured speed ranking established between these architectures. Evaluate the design by whether it works without a connection after initial caching, how clearly it communicates data freshness, how updates and failures are handled, and whether it distinguishes unknown, unassigned, and temporary entries without overstating their status.
