To build an HTTP server from scratch using TCP, open a TCP listener, then implement HTTP/1.1 parsing, message framing, response serialization, and connection handling above it. TCP delivers a reliable stream of bytes—not complete HTTP requests—so a socket read is never proof that a full request has arrived. This is a useful learning project, but a small custom implementation should not be treated as a production server without a separate security and conformance review.

What TCP gives you—and what HTTP adds

TCP provides the transport connection and reliable byte stream. HTTP/1.1 defines how those bytes form requests and responses, including message syntax, framing, and connection behavior. The relevant standards are RFC 9293, Transmission Control Protocol (August 2022) and RFC 9112, HTTP/1.1 (June 2022).

A request is not delivered as a ready-made object by TCP. The application must recognize its start-line, header fields, the blank line that ends the headers, and any body boundary. Data can arrive in pieces, and a read can contain only part of a request—or more bytes than one request. Your code must buffer and interpret the stream according to HTTP framing.

What a minimal server must do

Keep the core responsibilities separate. Each is a useful milestone and a distinct source of errors:

  • CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
  • Accept a TCP connection and read incoming bytes into a buffer.
  • Parse the request-line and header fields, then determine where the message ends.
  • Choose a response based on the parsed request.
  • Serialize a valid HTTP response with appropriate framing.
  • Manage the connection, including whether it remains open or closes.

These are learning milestones, not evidence that a minimal server implements all of HTTP/1.1. The Build Your Own HTTP Semantics and Syntax guide also points to RFC 9112 for HTTP semantics and syntax.

Parse requests from bytes, not assumptions

Read the start-line and headers

An HTTP/1.1 request begins with a request-line containing a method, request-target, and HTTP version. Header fields follow; an empty line marks the end of the headers. Parse the protocol as octets rather than assuming arbitrary text chunks align with lines or messages. RFC 9112 describes message syntax and parsing requirements.

Determine whether there is a body and where it ends

Request bodies are framed using Content-Length or Transfer-Encoding. Your parser must use the applicable framing rules to determine the message boundary; it cannot safely infer that the bytes currently available are the whole request. A socket read returning successfully only means bytes were read, not that a complete HTTP message was received.

Define and reject unsupported cases

For an educational implementation, it is reasonable to support a clearly limited subset. State what it accepts and reject malformed or unsupported framing instead of silently interpreting it another way. Lenient parsing can become a security issue when different recipients interpret the same message differently. RFC 9112 warns: “However, lenient parsing can result in request smuggling security vulnerabilities if there are multiple recipients of the message and each has its own unique interpretation of robustness (see Section 11.2).”

Serialize a response and manage the connection

A response needs a valid status line, headers, a blank line, and any response body. Its framing and connection behavior depend on factors including the request method, response status, and chosen framing. Follow RFC 9112 rather than treating a successful socket write as proof that the response is valid: writing bytes does not establish that they were serialized or framed correctly.

For a first exercise, return a small fixed response and make the connection behavior explicit. Add persistent connections only after the server can reliably parse message boundaries and determine when a request or response is complete. Persistence changes how multiple messages are handled on one connection; it is not equivalent to simply leaving a socket open.

Build the project in bounded stages

  1. Accept a connection. Create a TCP listener and accept a client connection.
  2. Inspect received bytes. Observe what arrives without assuming each read corresponds to a complete request.
  3. Parse one request. Recognize the request-line, headers, header terminator, and supported body framing.
  4. Return a fixed response. Serialize a status line, headers, blank line, and body with valid framing.
  5. Add buffering and robust framing. Handle incomplete reads and determine message boundaries according to the subset you support.
  6. Add routing. Select responses based on the parsed request.
  7. Optionally serve static files. Treat this as a separate feature with its own path and content-handling concerns.
  8. Study extensions separately. Persistence, chunked transfer coding, and TLS each add requirements beyond the initial exercise.

This sequence is pedagogical, not a claim of full HTTP/1.1 coverage. Document which features are implemented and which inputs the server rejects.

Raw TCP or a built-in HTTP server?

Approach What it supplies Best fit
Raw TCP sockets You implement HTTP parsing, framing, response serialization, and connection behavior. Learning how HTTP/1.1 operates over a byte stream.
Node.js HTTP API Node.js documents its HTTP API as extending net.Server and providing HTTP parsing and stream handling. Building an application server using Node.js’s HTTP layer.
Python http.server Python’s standard-library HTTP server module includes HTTP/1.1 behaviors such as handling Expect: 100-continue. Serving HTTP with Python’s existing server layer.

Node.js’s HTTP API documentation is a version-sensitive latest-documentation page. Python’s http.server documentation describes Python 3.14. Both are useful for comparison, but using either API delegates HTTP parsing rather than implementing it directly over raw TCP.

Know when the exercise stops being a safe shortcut

A hand-written parser is appropriate for understanding protocol mechanics. Do not put it in front of untrusted traffic as a production server without an independent security and conformance review. In particular, inconsistent parsing of message framing can create request-smuggling risk. State the implemented subset and its limits, and use a maintained HTTP implementation when the goal is to serve real traffic rather than learn how the protocol works.
