For a new Astro project, add Svelte with Astro’s integration, choose the Tailwind setup that matches your Tailwind major version, deploy a static site to Vercel without an adapter unless you need request-time rendering, and configure Prettier and explicit type checks separately. The steps below use the current Astro documentation paths; check the linked guides if package versions or commands have changed since their October 7, 2026 review.

1. Create an Astro project and add Svelte

Create a new Astro project using the current starter instructions in Astro’s installation guide. From the project directory, add the official Svelte integration:

npx astro add svelte

Astro’s setup command installs the integration and updates the project configuration. The integration supports rendering Svelte components and hydrating them on the client when needed. The documented route targets Svelte 5; projects that must use Svelte 3 or 4 should follow the integration guide’s separate compatibility instructions for @astrojs/svelte@5. See Astro’s Svelte integration guide.

Use Svelte for interactive islands rather than assuming every page needs client-side JavaScript. A Svelte component can be rendered by an Astro page; add a client directive to the component when it needs to become interactive in the browser.

2. Select the Tailwind installation path that matches your version

Tailwind 4 and Tailwind 3 use different Astro integrations. Choose one path based on the version your project needs; do not combine their installation steps.

Choice Astro requirement and setup When it fits
Tailwind 4 Astro 5.2.0 or later; run npx astro add tailwind. This sets up Tailwind’s Vite plugin. Use for a new project or one intentionally using Tailwind 4.
Tailwind 3 Use tailwindcss@3 with @astrojs/tailwind, plus Tailwind 3’s configuration and content globs. Use when maintaining a project on Tailwind 3 or when its existing configuration requires that major version.

For Tailwind 4, create or use a stylesheet such as src/styles/global.css and add:

@import "tailwindcss";

Import that stylesheet from a page or shared layout so its styles are included. Tailwind 3’s configuration approach is different; follow the matching instructions in Astro’s styling guide instead of applying the Tailwind 4 Vite-plugin steps to it.

3. Decide whether the Vercel adapter is necessary

An Astro project can be deployed to Vercel as a static site without adding an adapter. Add the Vercel adapter only if the project needs on-demand rendering or a documented Vercel feature that depends on it. Astro’s deployment guide covers deploying Astro to Vercel; its rendering guide explains on-demand rendering and adapters.

Rendering choice Use it when Vercel setup
Static, generated at build time Pages can be generated during the build and do not require fresh, personalized output for each request. Deploy the Astro project without an Astro Vercel adapter.
On-demand, rendered per request A route needs request-time data or personalization, or a required Vercel feature depends on the adapter. Run npx astro add vercel to install and configure the adapter.

Choosing the adapter is a rendering decision, not a prerequisite for selecting Vercel as the deployment platform. Avoid adding server-rendering complexity when build-time output meets the site’s needs.

4. Configure Prettier to format Astro files

For command-line formatting of .astro files, install prettier and prettier-plugin-astro, then register the plugin and Astro parser in your Prettier configuration. Astro’s editor guide provides the recommended configuration: Editor setup and formatting.

If you also want Prettier to sort Tailwind classes, install prettier-plugin-tailwindcss and put it last in the Prettier plugin array. This plugin order matters; keep the Astro plugin configuration and Tailwind sorter together in the same project config.

5. Make type checking an explicit project script

Astro supports TypeScript in .ts and .tsx files, Astro component frontmatter, and TypeScript configuration files. Starter projects include tsconfig.json. However, the development server and astro build transpile TypeScript without checking its types. Add a separate check to the project scripts so type errors can fail CI or a build workflow. Astro’s guide documents the options in TypeScript in Astro.

For example, a package script can run astro check before the build:

{
  "scripts": {
    "check": "astro check",
    "build": "npm run check && astro build"
  }
}

Use the package manager and script conventions already in the project if they differ from this npm example. Svelte component files may also need svelte-check for their own type checking; Astro’s check alone should not be treated as a substitute for that tool where Svelte-specific checks are required.

6. Verify the project before deployment

Once the integrations and scripts are in place, run the project’s type-check and build scripts. Confirm that the stylesheet is imported, Astro pages render, and any Svelte components that need browser interaction have the appropriate client directive. Then deploy the static output to Vercel, or use the adapter if the project deliberately uses on-demand rendering.
