You can build a useful WordPad-like desktop editor in Python with Tkinter by starting with a multiline text area, then adding file menus, New/Open/Save/Save As, and a clear way to track unsaved changes. The first version described here edits plain text; it does not preserve WordPad-style rich formatting. Python’s Tkinter documentation identifies Tkinter as Python’s standard interface to Tcl/Tk and documents the Text widget used for the editing area.

Decide what your editor will create

“WordPad” can mean a word processor with formatting, but a manageable first project is a single-document plain-text editor. It can open and save text files, but bold, font choices, and other styling cannot be retained in a plain-text file. If rich text is a requirement, plan for a document format and editing model that can represent formatting rather than treating the file as ordinary text.

For a starter application, keep the first milestone focused:

  • One document open at a time.
  • A multiline editing area with scrolling.
  • New, Open, Save, and Save As commands.
  • A prompt before discarding unsaved changes.
  • Useful feedback about the current filename and whether the document has changed.

Check that Python includes Tkinter

Tkinter is available with many Python installations, but it is an optional component in some CPython distributions. Confirm it is present in the Python environment you intend to use before building the interface. The official documentation for Python 3.14.8 describes Tkinter’s platform availability, including most Unix platforms, macOS, and Windows; availability still depends on the particular installation.

The central editing surface is Tkinter’s Text widget. It supports multiline text entry, tags, embedded items, and undo/redo. Tags can help with future formatting or syntax-coloring features, but using them does not make a plain-text save operation preserve rich formatting.

Build the window and editing surface

Create a root window, give it a descriptive title, and place a Text widget in the main area. Add a vertical scrollbar and connect it to the widget so long documents remain navigable. A status bar can display the active filename, a modified indicator, or the cursor position; it is useful feedback, not a substitute for tracking changes in application state.

Keep interface construction separate from file operations. Named functions for actions such as opening and saving make menu callbacks easier to follow and give you one place to handle errors and unsaved work.

Add menus and file operations

A File menu can contain New, Open, Save, Save As, and Exit. An Edit menu can hold Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, and Paste. Add keyboard shortcuts where appropriate, and make sure each command invokes the same function as its menu item so the two interaction paths behave consistently.

New

Before clearing the editing area, check whether the current document has unsaved changes. If the user chooses to save, complete that operation before replacing the document. If the user cancels, leave the existing text untouched. Once the new document is accepted, clear the text and reset the active filename so a later Save asks for a destination.

Open

Use a file-selection dialog to choose a path, then load the file into the text widget. The dialog may be canceled; do not attempt to open a file unless a path was returned. If the current document is modified, resolve that state before replacing it. Handle file-reading errors visibly rather than silently clearing the editor or claiming the file opened successfully.

Save and Save As

Save writes to the active filename. If there is no active filename yet, route the command through Save As. Save As asks for a destination path and, after a successful write, updates the active filename. This distinction is central to the file workflow: saving an existing document should not unexpectedly prompt for a new path each time.

Python’s file-dialog documentation says filename-returning calls such as askopenfilename and asksaveasfilename return an empty string when canceled. Check that result before reading or writing. Dialogs can also be configured with file filters and a default extension; those options guide selection but do not validate that a file’s contents match its extension.

Track changes and protect the user’s work

Choose an explicit strategy for determining whether the document has changed since its last successful save. Update the state after edits, and clear it only after a successful save or after loading a file. Use that state consistently for the window title, status bar, and prompts on New, Open, or Exit.

A cancellation must preserve the current document. A failed save must not mark the document as saved or change the active path as though the write succeeded. Report errors in terms the user can act on, such as an unavailable destination or a file that could not be read.

Choose the next features by scope

Once file operations and unsaved-change handling work, add features in the order that fits the editor you are building:

  • Editing commands: undo and redo, cut, copy, and paste make the basic editor more practical.
  • Search and replace: useful for longer documents, but define whether matching is case-sensitive and how replacement proceeds.
  • Formatting: Tkinter text tags can support visual styling, but preserving that styling requires a format capable of storing it.
  • Multiple documents or views: adds state-management work beyond the single-document milestone.
  • Syntax highlighting: appropriate for a code editor, not necessary for a general plain-text editor.

The official FLTK 1.4.5 editor tutorial offers another toolkit-specific example, covering a staged editor design that includes menus, loading and saving, changed-file tracking, editing commands, search and replace, multiple views, and C syntax highlighting. These are possible design milestones, not prerequisites for a Tkinter project.

Make file behavior explicit

A small editor still needs deliberate decisions about file encoding, line endings, large files, and error handling. The interface toolkit does not settle these choices for your application. Decide what encodings you support, what happens when a file cannot be decoded, and how the editor communicates problems. If you later add formatted documents, choose a storage format that represents the formatting and make clear when opening or saving would discard unsupported content.

John Elder’s Codemy tutorial, published November 13, 2020, walks through a Tkinter editor with file operations. Elder describes the project as able to edit text, HTML, Python, or other files; treat that as the tutorial author’s description, not a guarantee that an editor will correctly interpret or preserve every format. The tutorial is available at TKinter.com. For current API details, use the official Python documentation linked above.
