A useful AI reply system for an online store needs more than vector search: it needs current source data, a staff review step, and a way to check whether changes improve answers. PostgreSQL with pgvector can retrieve relevant product and policy information for a draft, but it cannot make stale facts current or verify a reply by itself. Treat “self-improving” as a controlled feedback and evaluation loop—not automatic learning from every message a seller sends.

How an AI customer support reply system fits together

A practical design separates source data, retrieval, drafting, and review. Store product descriptions, policies, FAQs, and approved support answers as versioned records. Create embeddings for text that benefits from semantic retrieval, and store each vector alongside its source identifier and metadata in PostgreSQL using pgvector. For each customer question, retrieve relevant records, provide them as context to a language model, and show the resulting draft to a staff member.

  1. Collect and normalize sources. Use canonical product information, current policies, FAQs, and approved past answers. Track source ownership and version or update time so staff can spot outdated context.
  2. Embed suitable text. Divide long material into useful passages, create embeddings, and retain metadata such as product, locale, tenant, source type, and version.
  3. Retrieve for the question. Search for semantically relevant passages, applying the same tenant, locale, product, and policy filters the application requires.
  4. Draft with traceable context. Give the model the question and retrieved material, and retain which sources and versions informed the draft.
  5. Review before sending. Let staff edit, accept, or reject the draft. Record feedback separately from factual corrections to source data.

This is a recommended architecture based on pgvector’s retrieval capabilities and platform guidance on source-grounded replies; it is not a verified account of a particular implementation. Shopify’s documentation likewise describes its suggested replies as generated from store information and says they may not appear when enough relevant information is unavailable: Shopify suggested replies.

Keep live transactional facts out of the vector store of record

Order status, inventory, delivery state, and a customer’s refund eligibility can change quickly. Retrieve these values from the authoritative order, inventory, or account system when needed. Use deterministic business rules for actions such as cancellations or refunds; similarity search does not establish that an action is permitted or current. If a live source is unavailable, the reply flow should say so or route the conversation to a person rather than guess.

Choosing a pgvector search strategy

pgvector performs exact nearest-neighbor search by default. Approximate indexes are optional: they can reduce search cost, but may return different neighbors than exact search. Start with exact search when the workload allows it, establish a relevance baseline, and compare approximate indexes against that baseline before choosing one.

Search option Documented tradeoff What to measure in your application
Exact search Perfect recall without an approximate-index tradeoff. Latency and resource use at your actual corpus size.
HNSW Generally a stronger speed/recall tradeoff than IVFFlat, with longer index builds and greater memory use. Recall against exact results, query latency, build time, memory use, and insert/update behavior.
IVFFlat Builds faster and uses less memory than HNSW, but has lower query performance in the documented comparison; its list and probe choices depend on the data. Recall against exact results, query latency, build time, memory use, and behavior after data changes.

These are qualitative tradeoffs from the pgvector project documentation, not benchmark results for an e-commerce reply system. There is no evidence here for a universally optimal index setting or a measured speedup. Test with the corpus size and update pattern you actually expect.

Account for filters and changing data

With approximate indexes, filtering may happen after the index scan. A query filtered by tenant, product, language, or policy type can therefore return too few matching rows even when the unfiltered search finds neighbors. pgvector documents iterative scans and other filtering approaches; assess them against your real query patterns. Compare filtered results with exact search, not just with unfiltered index results, and repeat the comparison as the corpus changes.

What “self-improving” should mean

Staff feedback is valuable, but an edited or rejected draft does not automatically establish the correct fact. Build separate paths for reply quality, source maintenance, evaluation, and release decisions.

Capture draft outcomes as signals

Record whether staff accepted, edited, or rejected each draft and, where practical, capture a reason. These signals can indicate a style issue, poor retrieval, missing context, or a policy problem. Treat them as diagnostic evidence rather than verified factual corrections.

Correct facts at their source

If a reply contains an incorrect product detail or policy, update the canonical catalog or policy information and then refresh the relevant indexed representation. Shopify distinguishes feedback on a reply from changing the product details, policies, pages, or knowledge base used as sources: Shopify conversation management guidance. A rating alone should not be treated as a source update.

Evaluate changes against reviewed examples

Keep a representative set of customer questions with human-reviewed expected answers or quality labels. Score whether replies are correct, supported by retrieved sources, policy-compliant, and appropriately willing to abstain or request human help. Re-run the same cases when changing prompts, retrieval, embeddings, or models. OpenAI’s guides describe criteria-based evaluations and datasets with human annotations: Working with evals and Getting started with datasets.

As of October 11, 2026, the Evals guide says existing evals become read-only on October 31, 2026, and the platform is scheduled to shut down on November 30, 2026. That schedule is time-sensitive; check the official guide before choosing an evaluation workflow.

Release improvements with review

Review evaluation failures and regressions before promoting a change to broad use. Shopify’s guidance on AI-powered tools recommends providing context and reviewing generated changes: Shopify AI-powered tools. A correction might update retrieval data, examples, prompts, or rules; do not claim that it trains or fine-tunes a model unless the implementation actually does so.

Set boundaries for replies and automation

Not every customer question should produce an automatic answer. The safer starting point is a staff-reviewed draft, especially when source coverage is incomplete, sources conflict, or the reply could create a financial or account consequence. Shopify tells merchants that they remain responsible for the accuracy of customer information even when using automatic text generation. Its suggested-replies feature is documented as a composing aid for staff: replies should be read closely and edited as needed before sending.

  • Draft when: retrieved sources clearly support a low-risk answer and the staff member can review it.
  • Ask for review or abstain when: sources are missing, stale, conflicting, or do not answer the question; a required live system is unavailable; or the question concerns a sensitive policy decision.
  • Require authoritative checks for: live order, inventory, delivery, refund, or account facts.
  • Do not treat retrieval as authorization: a relevant policy passage does not by itself permit the system to issue a refund, cancel an order, or change an account.

What Shopify Inbox’s suggested-reply requirements do—and do not—mean

Shopify’s current Help Center page says its AI-generated suggested replies are English-only and lists a maximum of 200,000 products among the requirements for that Shopify Inbox feature. This is a Shopify feature-eligibility condition, not a pgvector limit, a custom-system capacity benchmark, or evidence that a custom implementation will perform at a particular scale. Feature requirements can change, so consult the official eligibility page for the applicable store and region.

How to tell whether the system is improving

“Self-improving” is meaningful only when a change can be evaluated. Keep a record of the system version, retrieved source versions, staff outcome, and evaluation results so that a better-looking draft is not mistaken for a verified improvement. Compare candidate changes on correctness, source support, policy compliance, abstention behavior, and retrieval quality. For index changes, also measure recall against exact search, latency, build time, memory use, and behavior under your production filters. Promote a change only when it meets the criteria you set and does not introduce unacceptable regressions.
