You can build a static site generator in Python, but a custom tool is a good choice only when your site’s needs are narrow and stable enough to justify maintaining it. For project documentation written in Markdown, start with MkDocs; for a blog or broader content site, consider Pelican. Both produce static files without requiring dynamic server-side rendering for each page.
What a static site generator does
A static site generator turns source content and templates into files such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that a web server can deliver directly. The generation step happens before visitors request pages. Hosting is a separate concern: a provider that serves static files can host the generated output.
The practical question is not whether frameworks are excessive in general. It is whether the features you need are already handled by an existing generator—or whether adopting and maintaining those features would be more work than a small, purpose-built pipeline.

Choose an existing generator when its content model fits
MkDocs for Markdown project documentation
MkDocs is aimed at “Project documentation with Markdown.” Its documented workflow uses Markdown files and a YAML configuration file, with themes, plugins, a local preview server, and static HTML output. It is a natural starting point when you want documentation organized and published without designing your own content pipeline. See the MkDocs documentation.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
Its extension system also has a trust implication: MkDocs warns that installing a plugin installs a Python package and runs code written by its author; plugins are not sandboxed. Treat plugin selection as a software supply-chain decision, not just a theme or feature choice. See MkDocs’ plugin documentation.
Pelican for blogs and broader content sites
Pelican describes itself as “a static site generator, written in Python.” Its documented capabilities cover Markdown and reStructuredText, articles and pages, Jinja2 themes, feeds, multilingual content, imports, caching, and plugins. That makes it a better candidate than a documentation-focused tool when your site has a blog-style editorial model or needs several of those publishing features. See the Pelican documentation.

Compare requirements, not presumed speed
| Option | Best fit | What it provides | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| MkDocs | Project documentation primarily authored in Markdown | Markdown rendering, YAML configuration, themes, plugins, live preview, static HTML | Does the documentation structure fit? Do you need a theme or plugin? How will you deploy it? |
| Pelican | A blog or broader content site | Markdown or reStructuredText; articles and pages; Jinja2 themes; feeds; multilingual publishing; imports, caching, and plugins | Do you need feeds, multiple formats, localization, migration support, or customization? |
| Small custom generator | A site with a short, explicit list of stable requirements | A limited pipeline you define: read content and metadata, render templates, and write static output | Can you own testing, accessibility, links, deployment paths, and future maintenance? |
This is a feature comparison, not a speed or effort ranking. The cited project documentation does not establish controlled benchmarks or comparable development-time measurements.
When writing your own generator makes sense
A small generator is plausible when the site’s structure is simple, its publishing rules are understood, and you are willing to own the code that connects content to output. It is less compelling when you would soon need to recreate a feature set—such as feeds, localization, migrations, or a plugin ecosystem—that an existing tool already documents.

- 【What you Get】You will get 1*Pi 5 8GB Single Board,1*RasTech Case,1*Active Cooler,1*Screwdriver,1*Installation instructions,12-month free warranty, lifetime service, 24-hour prompt and friendly response.
- 【More Connectors】There are two USB 3.0 ports(5Gbps simultaneously) and two USB 2.0 ports, which triple total bandwidth ,support any combination of up to two cameras or displays. Peak SD card performance is doubled through support for the SDR104 high-speed mode. It provides a smooth desktop experience for you. Offer Gigabit Ethernet and a PCIe interface, along with dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0/BLE wireless capability. The RasTech Pi 5 Kit use the new 27W 5.1V 5A USB-C power connector.
- 【 Support Dual 4Kp60 Display 】Each of the two microHDMI sockets can control a 4K display at 60 Hertz, now support HDR, offering super HD video for media streaming projects. RPi 5 is the first RPi model that comes with a PCI Express port (PCIe 2.0 x1 with 500 MB/s) to attach SSDs (requires separate M.2 HAT).
- 【 Excellent Chips And Applications】Pi 5 is a full-size Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Pi 5. Pi 5 is more friendly and convenient in the development of Internet of Things, Web development, machine identification, automatic control and other electronic equipment applications and network.
- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
- Good signs: a limited number of content types, a predictable authoring format, a small set of templates, and requirements unlikely to change often.
- Warning signs: unclear metadata rules, frequent design or content-model changes, several authors needing a polished workflow, or requirements for features you have not planned to implement and maintain.
- Not a shortcut: “small” describes the scope of the generator, not the amount of care needed for accessibility, correct links, safe HTML handling, or dependable deployment.
A practical shape for a minimal Python generator
The following is a design outline, not a tested recipe or a feature claim about MkDocs or Pelican. Keep the first version deliberately narrow and add capabilities only when the site requires them.
- Choose a predictable content directory. Start with Markdown if it suits the writers and the content; keep source files separate from generated output.
- Set a small metadata convention. Define only the fields the site needs, such as title, date, slug, and—if necessary—a template choice. Validate required values and report errors clearly.
- Convert content, then render templates. Turn source text into HTML and place it inside a small, deliberate set of page templates. Handle escaping and metadata consistently.
- Write a clean build directory. Generate output in a known location, copy static assets, and use predictable paths so pages and assets work at the site’s deployment path.
- Add only required publishing features. Navigation, feeds, syntax highlighting, or a local preview command can be added when they solve a real need—not merely because a larger tool offers them.
- Preview and inspect links before publishing. Check generated pages and relative URLs, then deploy the output directory through a static-file hosting workflow. The renderer creates the files; it does not itself provide hosting.
Account for the maintenance you take on
Custom code makes the implementation your responsibility. Rebuild behavior, metadata validation, useful error messages, HTML escaping, accessibility, relative links, and deployment paths can all become important as the site grows. Extensions in an existing tool also carry costs: beyond maintenance, plugin code comes from its authors and must be trusted, as MkDocs’ warning makes explicit.
