For a portable kit that handles common small repairs, start with a compact cordless drill/driver and an impact driver, add a compact worklight, then choose one task-specific tool—such as an oscillating multi-tool—based on the work you expect to do. Menards’ listings offer examples of these roles, but they are product listings, not independent performance tests.
1. Compact cordless drill/driver for holes and everyday fastening
A drill/driver is a practical foundation for a small cordless kit: use it for pilot holes, general drilling, and driving screws. 4. A task-specific tool, such as an oscillating multi-tool
Choose the fourth role around the jobs you actually expect to do and the room you have to carry it. An oscillating multi-tool can broaden a kit beyond drilling and fastening; Menards lists cordless combos that include one. For readers with a wider range of cutting and repair tasks, its SKIL 20V six-tool kit listing includes a drill/driver, impact driver, 6-1/2-inch circular saw, reciprocating saw, oscillating multi-tool, spotlight, two batteries, and charger. That is a broader capability set, but the listing alone does not show that the larger kit is the right choice for travel.

How to choose a kit you will actually carry
- Match tools to tasks: Prioritize drilling and fastening for general repairs; add a multi-tool or other specialty tool only if likely jobs call for it.
- Check the battery platform and included batteries: Compare how many batteries are included and their stated capacities. The Performax listing, for example, specifies 2.0Ah and 4.0Ah batteries, while the SKIL six-tool listing specifies two batteries without stating their capacities in the cited details.
- Confirm the charger and storage: A charger and a carry solution affect how ready the kit is to bring along. The Performax listing specifies a soft storage bag; do not assume every kit includes one.
- Consider total tool count and bulk: A larger combo can cover more tasks, while a shorter essentials kit can be simpler to transport. Pick by the work you need to cover, not by the number of tools in the box.
