You can turn a Raspberry Pi Pico into the controller board for a leverless fightstick with a straightforward build: choose a button layout and enclosure, wire each button to a GPIO input and ground, install the Pico-specific GP2040-CE firmware, then test and configure the controls. The main decisions are physical—where the buttons go and how the case fits the board and wiring—not a special button circuit.
What you need to plan before wiring
A Pico-based leverless controller uses buttons instead of a joystick for directional inputs. Decide how many direction and action buttons you want, their spacing, and the enclosure dimensions before cutting or drilling the case. Leave room for the Pico, wire connections, and an accessible USB port.
There is no universal enclosure or button count specified by GP2040-CE. Treat the layout as a design choice: check that the button bodies fit the case and that the board can be mounted without pinching wires. Choose arcade-style buttons or another momentary switch format that suits your layout; the firmware setup depends on the electrical inputs, not a specific button brand.

For the documented GP2040-CE circuit, pressing a button connects its assigned GPIO input to ground. As the GP2040-CE wiring documentation explains, “GP2040-CE configures the input GPIO pins to be pulled up, expecting the button to short the pin to the ground when pressed.” GP2040-CE wiring documentation

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Connect one terminal of each button to its own assigned GPIO input.
- Connect the other terminal of each button to ground. You can daisy-chain a shared ground connection across buttons.
- Check the pinout for your exact RP2040 board before soldering. Board variants and clones may not map pins identically, even when they resemble a Pico.
Plan and label the GPIO assignments before connecting everything. If a control later appears under the wrong input, the issue may be the assignment or wiring rather than the button itself.
Wire and flash the Pico
- Choose your layout and case, then mark which GPIO input will serve each directional and action button.
- Wire each button between its assigned GPIO and ground, sharing the ground connection where practical. Confirm the board-specific pin mapping in the GP2040-CE wiring guide.
- Download the GP2040-CE UF2 built for the Raspberry Pi Pico from the project’s official repository. Do not assume a firmware image for another RP2040 board is interchangeable.
- Hold the Pico’s BOOTSEL button while connecting it to the computer. The board should appear as the
RPI-RP2drive. - Copy the Pico UF2 file to
RPI-RP2. The Pico reboots automatically after the file is copied. Follow the project’s installation instructions if the drive or reboot behavior differs.
Do not use a flash-nuke procedure casually: it clears custom GPIO mappings and add-ons, so you may need to configure those again.

Test the controls before closing the case
Connect the controller to the intended host and check every directional and action button with a gamepad tester or the host’s controller-test interface. Adafruit’s leverless controller software guide demonstrates a gamepad tester as one way to verify inputs.

- If a button does not register, check its ground connection, GPIO wire, solder joint, and assigned pin.
- If it registers as a different control, compare the physical wire with your GPIO plan and the firmware mapping.
- Repeat the test after correcting wiring or mappings, then close the case only when every input behaves as intended.
Configure input mode and SOCD behavior
GP2040-CE provides configurable input modes, remapping, and several SOCD cleaning options. SOCD means simultaneous opposite cardinal directions—for example, left and right pressed together. The firmware documents Up Priority (also called Stickless), Neutral, and Second Input Priority behavior; supported options can depend on firmware and target platform. Consult the current GP2040-CE usage guide for the available settings and verify the selected behavior in a tester or game before relying on it.

The usage guide currently signals v0.7.12 as an available update. Because firmware, mappings, and settings can change, use the current documentation and the build for your exact board rather than assuming an older walkthrough matches your setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to expect from platform compatibility
The GP2040-CE project lists PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Steam Deck, MiSTer, and Android among its supported platforms. That is project-documented firmware support, not a guarantee that every self-built Pico controller will work on every console without additional setup or authentication. Check current project notes and the target console’s controller requirements before choosing the build for a specific system.
