Yes—a Raspberry Pi can calculate useful NDVI images, but the camera’s raw pixel values are not reflectance measurements. A dual-camera design needs separate red and near-infrared channels, image alignment, controlled exposures, and calibration against known-reflectance references. Even when those steps are done well, NDVI indicates a pattern in vegetation reflectance; it does not diagnose a particular disease or nutrient deficiency.
What does an NDVI camera measure?
The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) compares near-infrared (NIR) and red reflectance:
NDVI = (NIR − red) / (NIR + red)
In this equation, red and NIR should represent reflectance, not simply the digital numbers recorded by a camera. Chlorophyll absorbs much of the red light that reaches a leaf, while leaf structure reflects more NIR. NDVI compresses that contrast into an index from −1 to 1. A positive value means the measured NIR reflectance is greater than the red reflectance; under the interpretation described by the study, healthy vegetation can approach 1.
That value is an indicator, not a diagnosis. A low or changing NDVI can flag a difference worth investigating, but the index alone cannot tell whether the cause is disease, pests, nutrient status, water stress, canopy structure, or another factor. Stamford and colleagues explain the measurement and its limits in their 2023 Plant Methods study.

How does the Raspberry Pi dual-camera design work?
The NDVIpi method pairs an ordinary RGB camera with a NoIR camera, connected to a Raspberry Pi. The RGB camera provides a visible red channel. The NoIR camera has no infrared-blocking filter; an added optical filter reduces red transmission while allowing NIR through. The study’s filter still admitted some red, so the authors corrected for that leakage rather than treating the filtered image as pure NIR.
For their system, the selected channel central wavelengths were about 620 nm for red and 750 nm for NIR. Those choices matter: NDVI values depend partly on which wavelengths a camera measures. Stamford et al. note that “there is no universally agreed-upon standard for the specific red and NIR wavelengths that should be used to determine NDVI.” Results from different cameras therefore should not be assumed interchangeable just because both are called NDVI systems.
Parts and functions
- Compute platform: a Raspberry Pi or compatible compute hardware to capture and process the images.
- Visible channel: an RGB camera whose red channel is used in the index.
- NIR channel: a NoIR camera and an NIR-transmitting filter that suppresses red as far as the chosen filter permits.
- Mount: a stable holder that keeps the camera planes aligned and minimizes relative movement.
- Calibration references: targets with documented reflectance values for the relevant bands.
- Processing workflow: capture, registration, calibration, and pixelwise NDVI calculation.
No one component turns this into a calibrated instrument. Filter transmission, camera response, exposure, mounting, reference targets, and processing all affect the resulting image. The paper validates an architecture and workflow; it does not establish current compatibility or retail prices for particular components.

What has to happen before the image represents NDVI?
A usable result depends on a sequence of optical, geometric, and radiometric steps. The image pipeline matters as much as the index formula.
- Capture red and NIR images. Keep the camera configuration and capture conditions consistent between sessions. Avoid clipping bright pixels: the NDVIpi authors adjusted capture conditions so the brightest reference stayed below digital number 240 on their 0–255 scale. That is their method, not a universal camera limit.
- Correct the NIR channel for red leakage. The filter in the study did not block all red light. Its residual red contribution had to be accounted for before interpreting the channel as NIR.
- Register the two images. Because the cameras have separate lenses and viewpoints, corresponding pixels will not automatically depict the same leaf or patch of ground. The study used feature-based image alignment and a holder that kept the cameras in the same plane.
- Calibrate pixel values to reflectance. Use references with known reflectance to map camera digital numbers to reflectance for the selected bands. Only then calculate the index from the red and NIR values.
- Calculate NDVI pixel by pixel. Apply (NIR − red)/(NIR + red) to the calibrated, aligned channels, and inspect the result for saturated areas, misregistration, or other capture artifacts.
Why alignment is a field issue
Registration is especially difficult when the subject is three-dimensional or uneven and close to the cameras: the two viewpoints see different amounts of parallax. A common camera plane and greater distance from the subject reduce the problem, although greater distance can also change the spatial detail available in an image.
Why raw values are not reflectance
Camera processing can make pixel response non-linear; gamma correction is one example discussed in the 2023 study. A two-point empirical-line calibration assumes a linear response between two references. Stamford et al. used six materials with known reflectance to account for non-linearity and found that approach more precise in their comparison. They also note that two references can still be useful where operational constraints make more impractical.

More reference materials do not rescue clipped measurements: once a sensor channel saturates, the original signal is lost. Calibration is also tied to appropriate known references and capture conditions. A calibration from one setup should not be treated as universally valid under changed lighting, exposure, optics, or camera processing.

In Stamford et al.’s experiments, the NDVIpi system performed strongly against standard spectrometry and produced NDVI performance comparable to a purpose-built multispectral camera. This is evidence that a low-cost build can produce useful measurements under the study’s methods—not proof that every Raspberry Pi camera, filter, or field setup will match a laboratory instrument.
The same study found that systems using different wavelength bands returned different NDVI values. Its chosen bands showed greater sensitivity to chlorophyll changes in that study, along with greater variation. That trade-off makes the values useful for a defined monitoring setup, but cautions against interpreting them as directly equivalent to values from another instrument.

The authors estimated that their complete NDVIpi system, including power source and screen, could be procured for approximately US$400–US$500 at the time of publication in 2023. This is a historical estimate, not a current parts quote. It describes the complete system rather than just a Raspberry Pi or camera.

The choice depends on whether the job needs mapped images, additional spectral bands, or repeated point measurements. These approaches answer related but different monitoring needs.
| Approach | Best fit | Calibration and repeatability | Workflow and cost evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY dual-camera imager | When spatial image maps are useful and a two-camera workflow is manageable. | Requires red/NIR channel characterization, reflectance calibration, saturation control, and image registration. Band choice affects values. | More optical and processing work than a single sensor. The NDVIpi paper’s approximately US$400–US$500 complete-system estimate is from 2023 publication time, not a current price. |
| Purpose-built multispectral camera | When an integrated imaging workflow or bands beyond red and NIR are needed; confirm the actual bands and supported indices for the specific system. | Its measurements still depend on the instrument’s bands and calibration. Values should not be presumed interchangeable with a DIY system. | The NDVIpi paper compared its study results with a purpose-built camera and cited an approximately US$4,500–US$5,000 publication-era estimate for that comparison instrument in 2023. This is not a current quote. |
| Ground-based NDVI sensor | When handheld spot checks or automated repeated measurements matter more than a full image map. | The 2025 study reports performance after application of its derived calibration function; that result does not guarantee performance from other sensors or setups. | A 2025 study describes a sensor priced under €250, with handheld and standalone automated modes. It reports field work in Benin and the Philippines and additional tests in Germany. |
The ground-based study reports r² = 0.99 after calibration against a reference sensor. That is the authors’ reported result for their derived calibration function, not a general accuracy guarantee. Details appear in the 2025 study, “A new, low-cost ground-based NDVI sensor for manual and automated crop monitoring”.
How should you choose a monitoring setup?
- Choose dual-camera imaging if you need spatial maps and can maintain alignment, consistent capture conditions, and reference-based calibration.
- Choose a multispectral camera if the required bands or additional indices, such as NDRE, are important. Verify that the model actually captures the needed bands; NDVI capability alone does not establish support for other indices.
- Choose a ground-based sensor if manual readings or automated time series are more useful than spatial images.
- Compare total workflow cost, not just sensor cost. For a DIY imager, include compute hardware, both cameras, optics and filters, mounting, reference targets, power, and image processing.
- Keep comparisons within a consistent measurement system. Before comparing readings across devices or locations, account for wavelength bands, calibration, and capture conditions.
For a Raspberry Pi build, the central engineering question is not simply whether the camera can produce an NDVI-looking image. It is whether both channels are measuring the intended reflectance consistently, are aligned on the same scene, and have a defensible calibration for the comparisons you plan to make.
