Yes—you can build a standalone voice translator around Google’s Gemma Translator project. Its documented Raspberry Pi setup runs Gemma 4 E2B locally through LiteRT-LM, with Moonshine components for speech recognition and speech output. The project says it needs no internet after setup, but downloading software and model files still requires initial access. Its README describes a build path, not a tested, turnkey product or a guarantee for every language pair.

How the Gemma translator works

A voice translator has four stages: capture speech, convert it to text, translate that text, and speak the translated result. The Gemma Translator project documents this sequence:

  1. Capture: A microphone or USB audio interface records the speaker.
  2. Transcribe: Moonshine speech-to-text (STT) converts the audio into text.
  3. Translate: Gemma 4 E2B runs locally through LiteRT-LM to translate the text.
  4. Speak: moonshine-voice text-to-speech (TTS) produces audio in the target language.

The project pairs a Python API server with a web front end intended for small displays. Its README is the source for the architecture and setup requirements: Google Gemma Translator repository.

What you need for the documented Raspberry Pi build

The project names a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM as its compute target. The board is only one part of the build; you also need audio input and output, a display, and the software environment.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (8GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
Requirement Documented specification
Compute Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM
Audio input Microphone or USB audio capture interface
Audio output Speaker or headphones
Display Monitor or touchscreen
Software Python 3.10+, Node.js 18+ (Node.js 20 LTS recommended), and Linux or macOS

These are the README’s stated prerequisites, not a claim that every combination of operating-system image and peripheral has been verified. For a kit, check that it contains the 8GB board and confirm separately whether it includes a suitable power supply, storage, cooling, case, and display. Verify that chosen audio and display peripherals work with the operating system and build you plan to use.

Build and start the project

Follow the repository’s current README and scripts rather than assuming the commands or model package will remain unchanged. The documented sequence is:

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
  1. Review the project README and confirm the current hardware, operating-system, and model instructions.
  2. Make the project scripts executable as directed in the README.
  3. Run the setup script to install and configure the project dependencies.
  4. Download and import the model using the project’s instructions.
  5. Start the services as documented, then check that the web interface, audio capture, translation, and speech output work together.

The repository also describes a Raspberry Pi deployment script that installs packages, configures the environment, fetches the LiteRT model, and sets up a kiosk-style service. The exact commands and their compatibility are repository-specific; check the live instructions for your chosen operating-system image before relying on them.

What “offline” means here

The README says the translator requires no internet after setup. In practical terms, plan to obtain the software, dependencies, and model files first; the offline claim applies to use after that setup, not to downloading the components. If the device must be installed in a location without internet, acquire the required files and prepare the system before taking it there.

Google describes LiteRT-LM as an on-device framework with CPU, GPU, and NPU support on Android and iOS. That platform description does not by itself establish performance on a Raspberry Pi. For the Pi appliance workflow, the project specifically documents LiteRT-LM with Gemma 4 E2B, so use its current runtime and model instructions rather than substituting an arbitrary Gemma package.

Choosing a model and runtime for another device

The Raspberry Pi project is one route, not the only way to run Gemma locally. Google’s model guide maps Gemma 4 E2B to mobile devices, E4B to mobile devices and laptops, 12B to laptops, desktops, and small servers, A4B to desktop computers and small servers, and 31B to large servers or clusters. These mappings are starting points for choosing a model, not guarantees of speed or translation quality on a particular machine. See Google’s Gemma model guide.

Google’s inference guide groups tools by intended use. Local chat interfaces include LM Studio and Ollama; local or edge inference frameworks include LiteRT-LM, llama.cpp, and MLX; and developer or tuning options include Transformers, Keras, Tunix, and Unsloth. Check that the framework supports the format of the model you intend to run. The guide is at Google’s Gemma inference guide.

For an alternative device-focused model family, Google DeepMind describes Gemma 3n as designed for local use on phones, tablets, and laptops, with audio, text, image, and video input capabilities and transcription and translation support. That page does not identify Gemma 3n as the model used by the Gemma Translator project. Google DeepMind says Gemma 3n “Enables developers to build intelligent, interactive features that respect user privacy and work reliably offline.” Treat that as the product page’s description, not independent validation of a particular translator build. See Google DeepMind’s Gemma 3n page.

How to judge translation quality for your use

TranslateGemma provides evidence about translation-focused models, but not a guarantee for the Gemma Translator Raspberry Pi workflow. Its technical report describes models based on Gemma 3, fine-tuned in two stages: supervised fine-tuning using synthetic and human-translated parallel data, then reinforcement learning using reward models. The report authors describe human evaluation on WMT25 across 10 language pairs and automatic evaluation on WMT24++ across 55 language pairs. Those counts describe benchmark coverage—not accuracy scores, and not results for every pair or real-world conversation. The report abstract says TranslateGemma improved over baseline Gemma 3 models, but the cited summary does not provide pair-by-pair scores or an operational test of this Pi voice system. Read the TranslateGemma technical report.

Before relying on a build, try the actual language pair and content you need. Check transcription errors with different speakers and background noise, review translated text against a trusted translation where possible, and observe end-to-end delay on the target hardware. Do not rely on an unvalidated setup for medical, legal, emergency, or other high-consequence communication.

Which local setup should you choose?

Route Best fit What to consider
Documented Raspberry Pi kiosk A dedicated voice-in, voice-out appliance with a display Requires the specified Pi 5 with 8GB RAM and separate audio and display components; setup is a custom project deployment.
Phone or tablet edge project A portable device-focused build Google describes Gemma 3n for local use on phones and tablets, but the cited page does not provide a like-for-like performance comparison with the Pi project.
Laptop or desktop local runtime Experimenting with local Gemma inference through a desktop interface or framework Google’s model guide maps model variants to device classes; actual behavior depends on hardware, runtime, model format, and configuration.

The cited sources do not establish comparable setup times, speed, battery life, or translation accuracy across these routes. Choose based on the device you already have, the interface you need, and the exact language pair you can test.
