A reliable text checker should distinguish the units it counts, keep findings positioned in the original string, and prevent slow analysis of old input from replacing newer results. In JavaScript, use Intl.Segmenter for human-facing grapheme counts, keep source offsets in UTF-16 code units, and commit asynchronous results only when they still match the current input revision.

Why “character count” needs a definition

JavaScript exposes several useful measures of text length, but they answer different questions. String.length counts UTF-16 code units—the units JavaScript uses for string indexing—not the number of visible characters. A supplementary-plane symbol such as the fox emoji shown in MDN’s String.length documentation uses two code units.

Unicode code points are another measure, but they do not necessarily match what a person sees as one character. A visible grapheme cluster can contain multiple code points, such as a base letter and combining mark or a joined emoji sequence. Unicode Standard Annex #29 describes default grapheme-cluster boundaries and permits implementations to use a declared profile. Its Version 49, dated 2026-09-01 and corresponding to Unicode 18.0.0, notes that a code point is often—but not always—the same as a writing-system unit or what a typical user considers a character. See the Unicode grapheme-boundary specification.

Measure What it counts JavaScript technique Best use and limitation
UTF-16 code units JavaScript string-indexing units text.length Use for indexes, slicing, and source offsets. Supplementary-plane code points use two units.
Unicode code points Code points encountered during string iteration [...text].length Useful when code-point count is the intended measure. Combining marks and emoji sequences may still comprise several code points per perceived character.
Extended grapheme clusters Approximate user-perceived characters Intl.Segmenter with granularity: "grapheme" Best default for a human-facing character counter, but boundaries are a standard approximation and can follow a declared profile.
UTF-8 bytes Encoded bytes new TextEncoder().encode(text).length Use for storage, transmission, or byte-based limits. It is not a character count and varies with encoding.

Count graphemes for a human-facing character total

For a counter intended to match what people perceive as characters, segment the original string into grapheme clusters:

    throw new Error("Intl.Segmenter is not available in this runtime");
  }

  const segmenter = new Intl.Segmenter(locale, {
    granularity: "grapheme"
  });

  let count = 0;
  for (const _segment of segmenter.segment(text)) {
    count += 1;
  }
  return count;
}

MDN’s Intl.Segmenter documentation labels the API Baseline 2024, meaning it became available across the latest browser versions starting in April 2024. That designation does not guarantee support in every older browser or embedded JavaScript runtime; check the environments your checker supports before relying on it.

Grapheme segmentation follows Unicode rules, not a guarantee that every reader will count every symbol the same way. If a product requires a specialized definition, state that definition rather than presenting the count as universally definitive.

Keep source offsets in UTF-16 code units

JavaScript string indexes, slice positions, and Intl.Segmenter segment indexes use UTF-16 code-unit offsets. A segment record’s index therefore points into the original JavaScript string, and its end is index + segment.length. You can use that range directly with string operations:

  });

  return Array.from(segmenter.segment(text), ({ segment, index }) => ({
    segment,
    start: index,
    end: index + segment.length
  }));
}

const text = "A 🦊eu0301";
const ranges = graphemeRanges(text);
// Each range's start and end are UTF-16 code-unit offsets into text.

Keep the original input as the source of truth when reporting matches, highlights, or replacement ranges. Normalizing, changing case, stripping punctuation, or otherwise transforming text can change lengths. If analysis needs transformed text, retain a mapping back to original code-unit positions; otherwise a range found in the transformed string may select the wrong source text.

Use locale-aware segmentation for words and sentences

Word boundaries depend on language conventions. A whitespace split is not a universal word tokenizer: languages including Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Lao, Khmer, and Myanmar commonly do not separate every word with spaces. Intl.Segmenter supports locale-sensitive word segmentation, and word segments include an isWordLike property that can help define which segments your checker counts.

function countWords(text, locale = "en") {
  const segmenter = new Intl.Segmenter(locale, {
    granularity: "word"
  });

  let count = 0;
  for (const item of segmenter.segment(text)) {
    if (item.isWordLike) count += 1;
  }
  return count;
}

Make the locale explicit, or explain how the application chooses it. The isWordLike approach is a practical product definition of a word count, not a universal editorial standard. For sentence counts, use sentence segmentation where supported, while recognizing that punctuation conventions differ; segmentation does not make the checker a grammar tool or guarantee an editorially preferred sentence count. Unicode’s UAX #29 defines default segmentation behavior, with room for declared profiles.

Measure bytes separately when encoded size matters

Use UTF-8 byte length only when the requirement is about encoded size, such as a storage or transmission limit. The TextEncoder API encodes strings as UTF-8:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
const byteLength = new TextEncoder().encode(text).length;

Do not label this result a character count. If using TextEncoder.encodeInto(), note that its result distinguishes the number of UTF-16 code units read from the number of bytes written; those values describe different units.

Prevent old asynchronous analysis from replacing current results

When text changes while analysis is running, treat each input revision as a distinct request. An earlier request can finish later than a newer one, so completion order alone is not a safe rule for updating the interface. The state update should be guarded by the revision that started the work.

let currentRevision = 0;

async function analyzeLatest(text) {
  const revision = ++currentRevision;
  const result = await runAnalysis(text);

  if (revision !== currentRevision) return;
  displayResult(result);
}

In a framework with effect cleanup, invalidate work in the cleanup function. React’s official useEffect documentation demonstrates an ignore flag set during cleanup because responses can arrive in a different order than requests:

useEffect(() => {
  let ignore = false;

  async function analyze() {
    const result = await runAnalysis(text);
    if (!ignore) setResult(result);
  }

  analyze();
  return () => {
    ignore = true;
  };
}, [text]);

If the underlying operation supports cancellation, cancel obsolete work to avoid spending effort on it. Keep the revision or cleanup guard as the commit check, especially for computations that cannot be cancelled. Handle failures under the same rule: an error from an obsolete request should not replace the current revision’s output. When showing the previous result beside newly edited text could mislead, clear it or visibly mark it as out of date while the new analysis is pending.
