A Go application can integrate with Gitea code review through three pieces: the pull-request review API to publish reviews and line comments, webhooks to react to pull-request and review activity, and an HTTP client or Gitea’s Go SDK to make authenticated API calls. The safest design checks the target instance’s API schema, ties every comment to the diff revision it was written for, and verifies webhook signatures before processing event data.
How a Gitea-first review tool fits together
Use Gitea as the system of record for pull requests and reviews. Your Go service can fetch the information it needs, run or coordinate review logic, then send a review back through Gitea’s API. Webhooks let the service respond to relevant repository activity instead of relying only on periodic checks.
- Read and analyze: retrieve pull-request and diff data from the target Gitea instance using its API.
- Publish feedback: create a pull-request review, optionally with file-specific line comments.
- React to activity: receive webhook deliveries for pull-request and review events, validate them, and dispatch work.
The API calls and event payloads are version-sensitive. Gitea’s API documentation currently includes a 28.0.0-labeled reference, while a separate reference is available for 1.26. Check the API documentation exposed for the instance you will integrate with and test the required operations against that instance; documentation versions alone do not establish which version a server runs. See Gitea’s API documentation and the Gitea 1.26 API reference.

Gitea documents review creation as POST /repos/{owner}/{repo}/pulls/{index}/reviews. The request can include a review body, the commit ID being reviewed, an event, and an array of line comments. A line comment includes its body, a repository tree path, and old and new positions in the diff. Positions are integers; the API describes zero for a new-file line or line zero. See Gitea’s create-review API reference.

A simplified request shape looks like this:
{
"body": "Please handle the error before returning.",
"commit_id": "commit-id-for-the-reviewed-patch",
"event": "COMMENT",
"comments": [
{
"body": "This branch can be nil here.",
"path": "internal/example.go",
"new_position": 42
}
]
}
This is an illustration of the documented fields, not a complete universal payload: use the schema for the Gitea version you target, especially for comments on changed or removed lines. Do not assume a position is a source-file line number. It refers to a location in the patch, so a comment can land on the wrong line or fail if the diff has changed.
Choose the review event deliberately
The documented event values are APPROVED, PENDING, COMMENT, REQUEST_CHANGES, and REQUEST_REVIEW. Select the value that matches what the tool actually intends to communicate: a comment is not an approval, and a request for changes should represent a meaningful review outcome rather than a generic notification.
A pending review can be created and submitted later with a separate operation: POST /repos/{owner}/{repo}/pulls/{index}/reviews/{id}. The submit operation accepts a body and event. This separation is useful when a tool needs to gather several comments before making the review visible as a submitted review. Confirm the request and response schema for the deployed instance in the pending-review submission reference.

Keep comments aligned with the patch
The create-review request associates feedback with a commit and diff coordinates. A practical implementation should fetch the current pull-request and diff data, generate comments against that patch, and verify the commit and positions immediately before submission. This fetch-and-check sequence is an engineering safeguard inferred from the API’s commit and position fields; it is not a guarantee that Gitea will detect every stale coordinate for you.
For existing feedback, Gitea’s review-comment retrieval operation documents records with fields such as body, commit IDs, diff hunk, path, original and current positions, and review ID. Those fields can help render stored comments or reconcile a tool’s proposed output with the review already recorded by Gitea. See the review-comment API reference.
Choose an HTTP client approach
Go’s standard net/http package gives a service direct control over requests, headers, transports, and response handling. Gitea’s Go SDK provides a more specialized client abstraction. Choose based on the operations you need, the versions you must support, and your project’s dependency and maintenance preferences—not on an assumption that either option is universally more compatible.

Go net/http |
You want direct request control or need an operation that your chosen SDK release does not cover. | You must implement the required API paths, authentication headers, serialization, errors, and response handling yourself. Close response bodies and configure the client and transport deliberately. |
| Gitea Go SDK | You want a Gitea-oriented client abstraction and its supported operations fit your integration. | Verify the release’s endpoint coverage and compatibility with both your Go toolchain and target Gitea instance. Package metadata is version-sensitive. |
The package page for Gitea’s Go SDK lists module path gitea.dev/sdk and states requirements of Go 1.26 or newer and Gitea 1.11 or newer. Treat those as the package metadata shown there, not as a guarantee for every release: verify the requirements of the specific version you plan to use. Gitea’s API usage documentation also points to the official Go SDK as a reference for authentication flow.
Authentication details can vary by Gitea release. The API documentation notes that the AccessToken method is deprecated for removal in Gitea 1.23. Check the authentication guidance for the target server instead of hard-coding an older token pattern. With direct HTTP calls, keep credential acquisition separate from request construction so the correct scheme can be supplied for that deployment.
Whichever client you choose, the Go net/http documentation covers client and server behavior, including response-body closure and client configuration. A direct request should set an appropriate content type for JSON, use a bounded timeout appropriate to the service, check the response status, and close the response body even when decoding fails.

Receive Gitea webhooks safely
Gitea supports repository, organization, user, and system webhook scopes. For a repository-level tool, subscribe only to the pull-request and review-related activity it needs. The webhook documentation explains that selecting the review umbrella event fans out to more specific approval, rejection, and review-comment events. Deliveries are asynchronous and include a unique delivery identifier and event headers; X-Gitea-Event-Type distinguishes specific triggers when a normalized event groups multiple actions. See Gitea’s webhook documentation.
Verify the signature before parsing
Read the raw request body, calculate HMAC-SHA256 with the configured webhook secret, and compare the result with the signature header before decoding JSON or acting on the event. Gitea documents X-Gitea-Signature as lowercase hexadecimal without a prefix. The compatible X-Hub-Signature-256 form uses a sha256= prefix. Use a constant-time comparison when possible; a parseable payload or the presence of a compatibility header does not establish authenticity.

deliveryID := r.Header.Get("X-Gitea-Delivery")
_ = eventType
_ = deliveryID
// Decode the verified body and dispatch the supported event.
w.WriteHeader(http.StatusAccepted)
}
}
The one-mebibyte body limit in this example is a local defensive choice, not a Gitea requirement; set a limit that fits the payloads your integration expects. Add appropriate imports and decode the verified body into the event schema supported by your target Gitea version. The exact delivery-header names and event payloads should be confirmed against that instance’s webhook documentation and configuration.
Make event handling safe to repeat
Record the unique delivery ID and make event processing idempotent where practical. For example, a worker can persist a delivery identifier before scheduling expensive analysis and avoid repeating the same side effect if the same delivery is encountered again. This is an application design recommendation based on Gitea’s documented unique delivery ID; it does not imply a particular retry policy or exactly-once delivery guarantee.
Keep the HTTP handler short: validate, identify the event, and enqueue or otherwise hand off work, then return a response. Perform slow analysis and review publication in a worker so webhook reception is not coupled to the full review duration. This is an operational design choice, not a promise about Gitea delivery timing.

- Confirm the target instance. Identify its Gitea version and inspect its own API documentation. Verify the review-create, pending-review submission, comment retrieval, and webhook schemas that your tool requires.
- Choose the client boundary. Compare the SDK release’s supported operations and version requirements with your needs. If using
net/http, isolate API calls behind a small client so authentication, timeouts, status handling, and JSON encoding are consistent. - Start with a non-posting path. Fetch a pull request and its patch, then produce proposed findings without submitting them. Check that each finding has the intended file path, patch position, and commit association.
- Submit a controlled review. Exercise the chosen event type and a line comment against a test pull request. Test pending-review submission separately if the tool uses drafts, and inspect the stored result through Gitea.
- Enable webhooks after verification is in place. Test valid and invalid signatures, unsupported event types, malformed JSON, oversized bodies, and duplicate delivery IDs. Confirm the handler does not parse or act on an unverified body.
- Observe API and worker failures. Log request identifiers and useful error context without logging secrets. Handle non-success API responses explicitly, and avoid blindly retrying review creation in a way that could publish duplicate feedback.
Compatibility checks that prevent avoidable breakage
Gitea documentation is not a substitute for checking the server you will call. The available references include different API-documentation generations, including a 28.0.0-labeled API page and a 1.26 reference. Before deployment, validate these points against the actual instance:
- The exact request and response fields for review creation and pending submission.
- The line-position rules for the diff formats and comment cases your tool emits.
- The event names and payloads enabled for the webhook scope you select.
- The accepted authentication method and any token behavior relevant to that server release.
- The SDK release’s Go and Gitea compatibility, if using the SDK.
These checks matter because API documentation versions and authentication guidance change over time; they do not identify the version or configuration of a reader’s server.
