Hyperledger Identus is an open-source toolkit for building decentralized identity applications—not a single wallet or ledger product. A practical first workflow assembles issuer and verifier cloud agents, a holder wallet SDK, and a mediator; then creates DIDs and a credential schema, issues a credential, and verifies a presentation. The right DID method, credential format, and protocol depend on the use case and on the support status of the exact components you plan to connect.
What Hyperledger Identus provides
Identus brings together software components for decentralized identity workflows. Its developer resources describe cloud agents, wallet SDKs, and modular functions for cryptography, DID operations, verifiable credentials, and messaging. Teams assemble the pieces they need for their application rather than adopting one mandatory identity format or registry. See the Identus project site and developer documentation.
Core building blocks
- Apollo: cryptographic primitives.
- Castor: DID operations.
- Pollux: verifiable credential functions.
- Mercury: DIDComm messaging.
- Cloud Agent API: DID management, credential issuance and verification, DIDComm messaging, connections, and multi-tenancy.
- Wallet SDKs: documented references for TypeScript, Swift, and Kotlin Multiplatform.
These components support distinct roles: an issuer creates credentials, a holder stores and presents them, and a verifier requests and checks presentations. A mediator can assist with DIDComm message delivery. The exact capabilities available depend on the selected component and protocol combination.

Plan a first issuer-to-verifier workflow
Start by deciding what the verifier needs to establish, what claims the issuer can attest to, and what the holder should retain. Minimize the information disclosed to what the interaction requires. The official quick-start sequence provides a useful development path, but it should not be mistaken for a universal production architecture.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Define roles and claims. Specify the issuer, holder, and verifier, the credential’s purpose, and the minimum claims needed for the verification decision.
- Choose the application SDK and deployment shape. Select among the documented TypeScript, Swift, or Kotlin Multiplatform wallet SDK references based on the client application. Decide whether Cloud Agents fit your deployment and integration needs. Do not assume SDKs or agents have identical feature coverage.
- Deploy issuer and verifier agents. Follow the Identus quick-start documentation to bring up the cloud-agent roles for the development flow.
- Set up the holder wallet and mediator. Configure the wallet SDK and deploy and connect to a mediator where the workflow requires DIDComm message delivery.
- Create identity and schema artifacts. Create the DIDs and credential schema needed by the chosen flow.
- Issue and verify. Issue a credential to the holder, request a presentation, and have the verifier check it. Confirm that the entire exchange uses the intended protocol and format on each side.
Use the developer documentation for the quick-start path and the reference documentation for component details. Before adapting a walkthrough, verify that its assumptions match your selected SDK, agent, DID method, credential format, and registry.
Choose DID methods, credential formats, and protocols
Identus documentation lists multiple approaches, including W3C DID support, PRISM DID, Peer DID, AnonCreds, SD-JWT, DIDComm, and OpenID for Verifiable Credentials flows. Its standards overview also references W3C DID Core 1.0, W3C credential formats, DIDComm Messaging v2, Hyperledger AnonCreds v1.0, OID4VCI, OID4VP, W3C Bitstring Status List, and DIF Presentation Exchange. Those listings are an index, not proof that every version or flow is interchangeable across every agent and wallet.

Before committing to a combination, consult the Identus specification matrix. It records implementation-specific statuses and qualifications, including cases described as partial, outdated, or in progress. Check the relevant rows for each participant in your flow, not just the headline standard name.

Use privacy and disclosure needs to guide format choice
AnonCreds is an option when selective disclosure and data minimization are important. Its specification describes a revocation mechanism using an accumulator for AnonCreds v1.0 and explains how methods can make AnonCreds objects usable with different verifiable data registries. The specification page labels v1.0 as a draft, so check its current status and the precise Identus method and workflow before relying on a version-specific capability. Read the Hyperledger AnonCreds specification.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Do not choose a format solely because it advertises a privacy feature. Confirm that the issuer, wallet, verifier, and any counterparties support the disclosure and presentation flow you need, and assess what information a verifier can infer from the exchange.
Match the DID method to the registry and application
The reference documentation describes PRISM DID as a Cardano-based decentralized identifier method. That does not mean every Identus deployment must use PRISM or Cardano. Select a DID method and any associated verifiable data registry based on the application’s resolution, publication, and interoperability needs, then verify that the chosen components support that method.

Compare options against the actual workflow
- Disclosure: determine which claims can be selectively disclosed and what data-minimization or correlation-resistance properties the use case requires.
- Interoperability: establish whether the selected agents, wallet, and counterparties support the required DIDComm, OpenID4VC, or presentation-exchange flow.
- Registry and method fit: check how identifiers and credential artifacts are published and resolved for the selected DID or AnonCreds method.
- Implementation status: use the specification matrix to identify whether the precise component-and-specification pairing is supported, qualified, outdated, or in progress.
- Operational model: account for agent deployment, multi-tenancy, authentication, and secret storage in the cloud-agent and wallet applications.
Review operational requirements before production
A working demonstration establishes that a particular development flow can run; it does not establish a universally secure or production-ready configuration. The Identus developer resources identify authentication, secret storage, verifiable data registry configuration, multi-tenancy, and troubleshooting as areas to review. Design and validate these choices for your threat model and deployment instead of assuming defaults provide a security guarantee.
