You can create a clean, text-first publication with WordPress by using a block theme and the Site Editor to shape a simple homepage, consistent article pages, and restrained navigation. “Medium-style” here means a readable editorial layout—not a promise to reproduce Medium’s proprietary design or features.
Choose how to run WordPress
WordPress can power a blog, a website, or both, as WordPress.org explains in its getting-started guide. Before designing, decide whether you want to manage a WordPress installation on your own host or use managed WordPress.com hosting.
| Route | What to expect | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted WordPress | You arrange hosting and usually a domain, and your hosting setup runs the WordPress software. Check host compatibility and understand who handles maintenance and backups. | People who want control over their hosting and installation. |
| WordPress.com | A managed WordPress hosting and website-building option. Setup and management differ from installing WordPress software on a separate host; available features depend on current terms. | People who prefer a managed service and want to assess its current plan features. |
The Learn WordPress setup course covers hosting and a domain as usual public-site basics, and also describes a private practice-site option for learning before choosing a public setup. Prices, plan limits, backups, support, and included features vary; check current provider terms rather than assuming they are equivalent.
Check hosting requirements before you build
For self-hosted WordPress, the official WordPress requirements page, checked October 7, 2026, recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. These are current recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular host configuration is secure. The page notes that some older versions may remain compatible, but they are end-of-life and may create security vulnerabilities. Verify the live requirements with your host before choosing a plan.

Choose a theme that exposes the Site Editor
For a no-code, whole-site editing workflow, choose and activate a block theme. Block themes use blocks for site areas such as navigation, headers, content, and footers. With one activated, open Appearance > Editor to access the Site Editor. WordPress’s block themes guide and Site Editor documentation explain this approach.
Classic themes remain a valid choice, but they generally use the Customizer, widgets, and PHP templates instead of the same Site Editor workflow. If your Appearance menu does not show the Editor, first check whether your active theme is a block theme; the Site Editor is not available in the same way with a classic theme.

Set a restrained visual system
In the Site Editor, open Styles to adjust site-wide typography, colors, and layout. Aim for a small color palette, clear heading hierarchy, and comfortable body-text width. These are design decisions, not WordPress requirements; the goal is to make reading and finding stories straightforward.

- Use a readable body type size and distinct, consistent heading styles.
- Keep the palette limited so links and calls to action remain easy to identify.
- Give article text enough horizontal breathing room, especially on wide screens.
- Reserve decorative elements for places where they help readers navigate or understand a story.
The Site Editor guide covers global styles, layout controls, and block-level style adjustments.
Build the shared header and footer
Use navigation and reusable template parts for areas that recur across the publication. Keep the header focused on the publication name and a small number of useful destinations, such as the story archive and an About page. Use the footer for secondary information rather than repeating the main navigation in a competing form.
Template parts let you reuse and manage shared areas such as headers and footers across templates. The Site Editor documentation describes how to work with these elements. Keep the main route to stories obvious so the frame supports reading rather than distracting from it.

Create a homepage that helps readers discover stories
A block theme can use the Query Loop and Post Template blocks to display a repeated list of posts. In the homepage template, select the Query Loop, choose a list or grid presentation, and arrange the post fields you want readers to scan. WordPress’s additional Site Editor guide describes these configurable blocks.
- Title: make it the clearest and most prominent link to the story.
- Date and author: include these when they help readers assess context and authorship.
- Category or tags: use them to clarify a story’s subject, not as clutter.
- Featured image: include one when it adds meaning; a text-first design does not require an image on every listing.
Decide whether the homepage should emphasize the latest posts, a featured story, or a simple archive. The blocks are configurable; WordPress does not prescribe a single Medium-like arrangement.

Make article pages consistent
Adjust the single-post template so every story has a familiar structure. A practical order is title, author and date context, article content, and any useful category information. Keep the reading area focused on the story, and avoid adding optional elements that compete with the text.
Patterns can speed up repeatable layouts. A pattern is a collection of blocks that can be inserted and edited like other blocks. If a pattern is synced, changes to it propagate wherever it is used; use synchronization only for elements that should genuinely stay the same across those uses. WordPress explains the distinction in its Block Patterns documentation.
Preview at narrow and wide widths
Before saving, use the Site Editor’s preview and responsive viewport controls to inspect the homepage and a sample article. Check that navigation remains usable, titles do not become awkwardly cramped, metadata is understandable, and body text is comfortable to read at both narrow and wide widths. Preview tools help you inspect the design; they do not guarantee that a layout will work well on every device.

WordPress.org’s getting-started guide lays out reading, planning, installation, and setup as the basic path. Before launch, confirm that your host meets the current technical requirements, review the public pages, and understand how your installation will receive updates. Keep WordPress and its active components current, and select themes or plugins only when they meet a real need and are compatible with your setup.
