To build a volume profile in C#, map each trade or bar’s reported volume to a canonical price bucket, then derive the point of control (POC) and value area high/low (VAH/VAL) from those buckets. The calculation is only as meaningful as its inputs: decide what the feed calls volume, how prices are grouped, which period the profile covers, and which Value Area convention you need before writing the indicator.
Decide what the profile should represent
A volume profile groups activity by price; ordinary time bars group activity by time. Its results depend on both the source data and the bucketing rules. A profile built from individual executions can preserve traded prices that a bar-based approximation cannot. A bar input may assign the bar’s reported volume to its close or another chosen price, but that is an approximation, not a reconstruction of every trade.
Write down the data contract before implementing the accumulator:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Input: individual trades, bars, or another feed event.
- Fields: timestamp, price, volume, instrument, and—if available—bid, ask, or an aggressor-side flag.
- Volume meaning: actual traded quantity or a proxy such as tick count. Feed semantics vary; do not assume every field named volume has the same meaning.
- Profile period: a session, selected bar range, composite interval, or rolling window.
- Price grouping: exchange tick increments or a deliberately coarser level size.
- Compatibility: whether output must match another platform’s specific Value Area and tie rules.
The market, exchange, feed vendor, session calendar, and charting API are project-specific decisions. They determine details such as tick size, available resolution, and session boundaries.

Map prices to stable bucket keys
Avoid using an unnormalized floating-point price as a dictionary key. A practical approach is to convert price to an integer tick index using the instrument’s tick increment, so prices that represent the same valid level share a key. Use the platform’s canonical price-rounding helper when available, and explicitly handle off-grid values and overflow.
long ToTickIndex(decimal price, decimal tickSize)
{
if (tickSize <= 0m)
throw new ArgumentOutOfRangeException(nameof(tickSize));
decimal ticks = price / tickSize;
return checked((long)decimal.Round(ticks, 0, MidpointRounding.AwayFromZero));
}
This example makes a rounding choice explicit; it is not a universal exchange rule. Confirm that the feed’s price convention and the instrument’s tick increment support it. An alternative is to use decimal prices rounded to a configured increment. QuantConnect LEAN’s MarketProfile is one reference implementation that uses rounded close prices and a sorted price map; its design is an example, not a guarantee of parity with another platform. See the LEAN MarketProfile source.
Also decide whether the profile uses every execution price, bar closes, or grouped ticks. These choices change the profile’s resolution and interpretation.
Accumulate volume by price
A dictionary keyed by integer tick index is a straightforward starting point for a range that can expand as prices arrive. Each update adds volume to its bucket; optional fields can track trade count and side-specific subtotals.

buckets.Add(key, bucket);
}
bucket.TotalVolume += volume;
bucket.TradeCount++;
}
Choose numeric types that suit the feed’s volume representation and expected range. For historical bars or live events, validate inputs according to the feed contract; do not silently convert a count-like value into traded quantity. A sorted structure can simplify ordered traversal, while a dictionary can make updates straightforward. Neither is automatically faster for every workload.
Calculate POC and define tie behavior
The point of control is the price bucket with the greatest accumulated volume. A full scan is simple and easy to verify. Make ties deterministic so repeated calculations produce the same answer.
long FindPoc(IReadOnlyDictionary<long, VolumeBucket> buckets)
{
if (buckets.Count == 0)
throw new InvalidOperationException("Cannot find POC in an empty profile.");
long bestKey = 0;
decimal bestVolume = decimal.MinValue;
foreach (var pair in buckets)
{
if (pair.Value.TotalVolume > bestVolume ||
(pair.Value.TotalVolume == bestVolume && pair.Key < bestKey))
{
bestKey = pair.Key;
bestVolume = pair.Value.TotalVolume;
}
}
return bestKey;
}
The sample chooses the lower price when volumes tie. You could instead choose the higher level or apply another documented rule. LEAN’s implementation resolves tied maxima by choosing the level closer to the midpoint of its sorted price levels; follow that only if it suits your compatibility target.

Calculate Value Area with an explicit convention
Value Area is a contiguous price range intended to include a configured fraction of the profile’s volume. The percentage alone does not define the result: expansion order, treatment of equal neighboring volumes, and handling of empty price levels can also differ.
A common expansion method is:
- Choose a target fraction and calculate the corresponding volume from the profile total.
- Start with the POC bucket included in the range.
- Compare the next eligible bucket above and below the current range.
- Add the side with greater volume; document a deterministic rule for equal volumes.
- Continue until the included volume reaches or exceeds the target. The outer included prices are VAH and VAL.
Decide whether “next bucket” means the next occupied price or the next tick level; gaps can make those approaches differ. Validate behavior with small known profiles, including ties and gaps, before using live data.
Settings are platform conventions, not universal definitions. LEAN’s MarketProfile source has a configurable Value Area percentage with a default of 0.70. NinjaTrader’s Order Flow Volume Profile documentation describes a configurable Value Area setting of 68%. These settings do not imply that either convention is correct for every use case. For exact compatibility, reproduce the target product’s full calculation rules rather than matching only its percentage: LEAN MarketProfile source and NinjaTrader Order Flow Volume Profile documentation.
Keep aggressor-side classification separate
Total volume can be accumulated even when the feed does not identify buyer- or seller-aggressed trades. If the source supplies a reliable aggressor flag, retain its meaning and provenance. If it does not, a common heuristic classifies a trade at or above the ask as buyer-aggressed and one at or below the bid as seller-aggressed; trades inside the spread or without usable quotes need an explicit fallback, often an unknown category.

Do not infer side from price alone when the necessary quote data is absent. Keep total volume authoritative and side subtotals optional so uncertainty in classification does not corrupt the base profile. NinjaTrader documents bid/ask classification and notes that tick resolution is required for its buy/sell and delta display modes; its feature behavior may depend on the platform version. Consult its Order Flow Volume Profile guide for that product’s conventions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Manage updates, rolling windows, and profile lifecycle
For live accuracy, update the affected bucket as each input event arrives. Derived values need not necessarily be recalculated and redrawn on every event: mark them dirty and recompute on a cadence that meets the indicator’s latency needs. Recompute or finalize when a session or other profile period completes.
For a rolling window, retain enough information to reverse old contributions. When an observation expires, subtract its volume from the corresponding bucket and remove the bucket if it becomes empty. LEAN’s source is a useful example of rolling-window bookkeeping alongside its profile calculations: MarketProfile.cs.

Input resolution affects fidelity. NinjaTrader describes volume profiles based on last-traded volume at the selected source resolution, with session, bar, and composite periods and options to group price levels. Its documentation says minute resolution may suit daily or larger chart intervals, while granular intraday drawings may call for tick resolution. Treat those as product-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every feed or charting system.

Separate the calculation engine from rendering
The calculation layer should expose a consistent snapshot of price levels, volumes, POC, and VAH/VAL. The renderer can then map visible prices and volume to pixels and handle viewport changes and bar scaling without owning the profile logic. If updates and rendering run on different threads, use an immutable snapshot or synchronization so rendering cannot observe partially updated state.
Visual refresh cadence and data-update accuracy are separate decisions: the engine can consume every event while the renderer refreshes less often. Measure processing time, worst-case latency, allocations, recomputation frequency, synchronization waits, and render time before replacing a dictionary with arrays or chunked storage.
Test the rules, not just the drawing
Before wiring the engine into a chart, test its calculations with small, hand-checkable input sets. Include cases that exercise:

- Prices that are off-grid or close to a rounding boundary.
- Two or more buckets tied for maximum volume.
- Value Area expansion ties, gaps, and a target reached exactly versus exceeded.
- Empty input and zero-volume observations.
- Rolling-window expiry that empties a bucket or changes the POC.
- Missing quotes or unknown aggressor side while total volume remains correct.
For a platform-parity requirement, compare outputs against that platform using the same input resolution, period boundaries, price grouping, Value Area percentage, and tie rules. A visually similar profile is not proof of identical calculations.
Implementation choices to settle before release
- Input fidelity: raw trades preserve execution-level prices; OHLCV bars provide a coarser representation.
- Volume semantics: confirm traded quantity versus tick count or another proxy.
- Price grouping: use the actual instrument tick increment or a documented coarser grouping.
- Period: define session boundaries, fixed-range behavior, composite intervals, or rolling-window length.
- Value Area: specify target share, expansion algorithm, tie behavior, and treatment of unoccupied levels.
- Runtime: set throughput and latency needs, then measure memory, allocations, recalculation cost, and rendering separately.
- Compatibility: match a platform’s data resolution and conventions only when exact parity is a requirement.
For a C# implementation reference, LEAN documents Market Profile VOL, configurable periods and Value Area percentage, price rounding, rolling history, and POC/Value Area outputs. Its algorithm is informative, but should not be assumed to match another platform: QuantConnect Writing Algorithms documentation.
