A browser-based saxophone synth can use Web Audio to create the sound and Web MIDI to receive notes and expressive controls from an external controller. Gemini’s role needs to be described separately: its documented audio features analyze audio and return text, but do not establish Gemini as the real-time sound engine. The practical prototype is therefore an instrument built from a Web Audio synthesis graph, with MIDI as an optional control input and Gemini used only for a clearly defined assistance or analysis step.
What the prototype does
Think of the instrument as two connected parts: an input path that supplies musical events and a sound engine that turns those events into audio. A controller can send note and control messages; the browser app maps them to parameters such as pitch, loudness, or vibrato, then uses its audio graph to produce sound.
- Web MIDI: receives control data from an external MIDI device. MIDI messages are not audio.
- Web Audio: processes and synthesizes audio through connected audio nodes.
- Gemini: may support a separate task, such as helping draft code or analyzing supplied audio, but the available documentation does not establish it as the instrument’s real-time synthesizer.
The W3C’s Web Audio API 1.1 Working Draft, dated 22 September 2026, describes a high-level API for processing and synthesizing audio in web applications and frames audio as a routing graph. It is a working draft, not a final specification. Read the Web Audio API 1.1 specification.

How to structure a rapid prototype
1. Build the sound engine first
Create a Web Audio graph that responds to a small set of instrument controls. Start with a sound that can be triggered and released reliably, then refine its tone and articulation. Web Audio is the part that generates and processes the audio; MIDI is not needed to make a first playable prototype because controls can be triggered within the app.
2. Map MIDI events to instrument controls
Add an optional Web MIDI input path. The app can use note events to start and stop sounds and map controller messages to expressive parameters. Treat this as an event-to-control mapping problem: a message from the device changes the instrument’s state, while the Web Audio graph remains responsible for producing the sound.

3. Choose an input that fits the playing style
A keyboard-style MIDI controller can supply notes and controls. A MIDI wind controller is another relevant option for a saxophone-style instrument because it provides a wind-oriented way to send MIDI control events. It is optional; the browser synth does not inherently require one. The specifications establish the category, but do not guarantee compatibility for a particular device, browser, or operating system.

Gemini’s official audio documentation describes audio input and audio-understanding use cases that produce text responses. That supports using Gemini for a distinct audio-analysis task, not assuming it creates the live notes or sound of this instrument. If Gemini helped generate or revise code, describe that as coding assistance. If it analyzed a recording, identify the recording-analysis step. Do not present either workflow as a built-in real-time synthesis capability. See Gemini’s audio documentation.

What to test before calling it usable
- Trigger and release notes from the app itself before adding external hardware.
- Confirm the intended MIDI device can be selected and that its note and controller messages reach the app.
- Check that each mapped control changes the intended sound parameter rather than triggering an unrelated action.
- Test the full setup in the target browser and operating system. The cited specifications do not provide a current compatibility guarantee for every combination.
- Keep the sound engine functional when no MIDI device is connected, so the external controller remains an optional input path.

This architecture is a credible way to prototype a browser instrument: Web Audio generates the sound, Web MIDI can supply expressive input, and Gemini can be assigned a separate, documented assistance or audio-understanding role. It does not establish a particular saxophone sound quality, latency, cross-browser support, or a specific Gemini integration. Those depend on implementation and the target environment, and should be evaluated in the actual prototype rather than assumed.
