Build the site shell in Astro and make the game board a Vue 3 component hydrated in the browser. Keep the rules explicit: represent a word as a path through adjacent cells, forbid reusing a cell within that path, and validate the resulting letters against a dictionary chosen for your game. The timer, minimum word length, and scoring should follow a named edition or a clearly stated house ruleset.

How should Astro and Vue divide the work?

Astro is a good fit for page structure, navigation, metadata, content, and routes. Vue can own the changing game state: the board, selected path, accepted words, score, and countdown. This keeps static or content-focused pages from needing game logic while hydrating the interactive portion where play happens.

Astro’s official @astrojs/vue integration supports rendering and client-side hydration of Vue 3 components. Its documentation displayed version 7.0.3 when accessed on October 7, 2026; package versions change, so check the current page for the version and setup details. The documented setup commands are npx astro add vue, pnpm astro add vue, or yarn astro add vue. Manual installation is also documented. See the Astro Vue integration guide.

In an Astro page, place the game component where it belongs and choose a hydration directive according to when it should become interactive. For a game that should work as soon as the page loads, a client-load strategy is straightforward; a visibility-based strategy can defer hydration until the game is near the viewport. Choose based on the experience you want rather than treating one directive as mandatory.

Big Boggle, with 5x5 Grid and 25 Letter Cubes, by Winning Moves Games USA
  • BIGGER BOGGLE: Now you can make longer words with a larger 5x5 grid AND you've got 3 minutes to do it
  • SETUP: Shake, shake, shake the letter cubes, start the timer and let your eyes see what's right in front of you
  • IT'S FUN AND SIMPLE: Each player searches the letters to make words of FOUR letters or more. When you find a word, write it down
  • SCORING: Points are tallied based on the length of your word - BUT - if another player has the same word, NO ONE scores for that word! So - be unique
  • HISTORY LESSON: Big Boggle debuted in 1979 as Parker Brothers Bigger Hidden WORD Game, and was enjoyed by word game players for over 30 years

A useful project boundary is to keep the Vue component focused on composition and user interaction, while moving rules into small modules or composables. For example, separate board/path validation, dictionary lookup, scoring, and timer behavior. This is an organizational choice, not an Astro convention.

How do you represent a Boggle board and check adjacent letters?

Store each cell with its row, column, and letter. A selected word is not an arbitrary string assembled from the board: it is an ordered path through cells. For every new selection, compare its coordinates with the previous cell and allow it only if it is one step away horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Also track the cells already used in the current path so that a cell cannot be selected twice in the same word.

Hasbro’s C2187 rules say: “The letter cubes used to form a word must touch in sequence horizontally, vertically, or diagonally in any direction.” The C2187 rules also prohibit using the same cube more than once in one word. See Hasbro’s Boggle Classic Instructions, C2187 (© 2018).

Validate the path before validating the word

  1. Start with an empty path and an empty set of used cell identifiers.
  2. When a player selects a cell, accept it only if it is adjacent to the current path’s last cell and is not already in the used-cell set.
  3. Append the cell to the path and add its identifier to the set. If the player removes a selection or starts over, update both together.
  4. Build the candidate word from the selected cells in path order, then apply the game’s length and dictionary rules.

Keep these checks distinct. A string can be in the dictionary but still be invalid if the player did not trace a legal path; a valid path can still spell a word your chosen dictionary does not accept.

Which dictionary and Boggle rules should the game use?

Choose the rules before writing the timer and score logic. Hasbro’s C2187 rules require words of at least three letters, permit horizontal, vertical, and diagonal connections, exclude proper nouns, and allow words in any tense or form. Words contained inside longer words can also count. Players use an English dictionary agreed for play; there is no single dictionary requirement in those rules. State the dictionary and policy in your game rather than presenting a particular word list as universally official.

A simple implementation can load normalized dictionary entries into a JavaScript Set and use membership checks after a path passes the board rules. Decide how to handle capitalization, punctuation, inflections, regional spellings, and words with special characters. A larger or broader dictionary improves coverage but increases the data sent to the browser; the right trade-off depends on the intended locale and game experience.

Be careful with Qu. In Boggle, the Qu cube counts as two letters for word length and scoring even though it is one cube and one path step. Store or render that cube in a way that preserves the distinction between selected cube count and displayed letter count.

How long should a round last, and how should scoring work?

Timer length varies by edition. Hasbro’s 2018 C2187 rules specify a 90-second round and explain that traditional three-minute play can be made by restarting for another 90 seconds. Hasbro’s US page for model 00384 describes a three-minute version for two to six players. These are edition differences, not one universal timer; identify the ruleset you implement.

For scoring, translate the chosen rules into a small, testable function rather than tying points to UI behavior. Apply the minimum word length and any word-deduplication or player-comparison rules required by your mode. Account for Qu as two letters where the rules call for letter-based scoring. If you use a different scoring table, label it as a house rule and describe it to players before the round starts.

Hasbro’s C2187 document lists 16 letter cubes. If you generate boards digitally rather than reproducing a particular physical edition, explain that distinction; a digital board generator need not be assumed to match a specific box’s cube distribution.

How should mouse and touch selection work?

Treat pointer input as another way to construct the same cell path, not as a separate rules system. The board model should receive a sequence of selected cell identifiers regardless of whether a person clicks, taps, or drags. Keep the path visible while it is being built, provide an obvious way to submit or cancel it, and ensure the interaction can also be operated without dragging when practical.

Touch behavior depends on the implementation and device. Do not assume desktop mouse events alone will provide a good touch experience, and do not claim compatibility across devices without testing the actual interaction. Test selection, cancellation, and release behavior on the target browsers and input methods.

Should a browser word game validate on the client or server?

For casual solo or local play, client-side dictionary lookup is simple and avoids a network request for every submitted word. It also keeps the core play loop responsive when connectivity is unavailable. This is appropriate when the score is only for the player’s own session.

For competitive results or leaderboards, the browser cannot be treated as a trusted authority: players control the client and can alter its state or submit fabricated scores. If results matter, have a server verify submissions against the board, ruleset, dictionary policy, and scoring logic, and apply appropriate abuse controls. That is an architecture recommendation, not a claim that any particular implementation has been security-audited.

A practical hybrid is to validate immediately in the browser for responsive feedback, then send a completed result to a server for authoritative verification before it appears on a leaderboard. The server must know which board and rules were used; otherwise it cannot reliably recompute whether submitted words were possible.

What should the implementation keep explicit?

  • Framework boundary: Astro owns the site and routes; Vue owns the interactive game island.
  • Path legality: each step touches the previous cell in one of eight directions, with no repeated cell in a word.
  • Word policy: publish the dictionary and the rules for minimum length, proper nouns, variants, and Qu.
  • Edition: name the timer and scoring rules rather than implying all Boggle editions use the same settings.
  • Trust level: client-side validation suits casual play; important competitive scores need server verification.
  • Input coverage: model path changes independently of mouse or touch and test the actual devices and browsers you support.
