You can add an interactive Three.js scene to a React developer portfolio without turning the whole site into a 3D interface. Use React Three Fiber to render the scene inside a React app, while keeping navigation, project details, and contact information as ordinary page content. The result can demonstrate both interface work and 3D interaction; it does not, by itself, prove hiring or conversion outcomes.
What React Three Fiber does in a React portfolio
Three.js is the 3D library; React Three Fiber is a React renderer for Three.js. It lets you describe a scene with React components and connect scene behavior to React state and the wider React ecosystem. This makes it a natural option when the rest of the portfolio is already a React app.
A portfolio can combine regular React sections—such as an introduction, selected projects, skills, and contact details—with a focused 3D scene. Keep essential content readable and usable without interacting with the canvas. The 3D element should demonstrate a deliberate interaction or visual idea, rather than become a barrier between visitors and your work.
Choose the scene approach before building
| Approach | Fits when | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| React Three Fiber | The application is React-based and scene elements benefit from components, React state, or integration with the existing UI. | Keep the React and Fiber major versions compatible, and account for the rendering work of an interactive scene. |
| Direct Three.js | You want to build around Three.js directly rather than express the scene through React components. | You will manage the scene in the Three.js setup alongside, rather than through, React’s rendering model. |
Neither route is universally faster or easier. The choice depends on the app you already have, the amount of direct Three.js control you need, and how you want scene logic to relate to application state.

Set up React and verify version compatibility
Start with a React application using a build tool such as Vite, or the framework already used by your project. Three.js documents npm with a build tool as a local-development option. The React Three Fiber introduction lists three, @types/three, and @react-three/fiber as the installation set.
Check the versions before installing or copying a tutorial’s package file: the React Three Fiber introduction states that Fiber v8 pairs with React 18, and Fiber v9 pairs with React 19. These are version-sensitive details, so verify the current stable documentation and the versions actually installed in your app.

Add the canvas to the React page
React Three Fiber’s Canvas component is the bridge between the React page and the 3D scene. It sets up the scene and camera, renders the scene, and sizes itself to its parent. That last point makes the surrounding layout part of the implementation, not an afterthought.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteimport { Canvas } from '@react-three/fiber';
function PortfolioScene() {
return (
<Canvas>
{/* Add scene components here. */}
</Canvas>
);
}
Place PortfolioScene where the visual belongs in the page, and give its containing element an intentional height and responsive layout. If the parent has no usable height, the canvas has no useful area to fill. Test its proportions at the screen sizes your portfolio supports, and preserve normal page flow for text, links, and project content.

Organize models, textures, and other assets
Three.js’s installation guide describes keeping static assets such as models and textures in a public directory. A sample portfolio repository also separates model and texture assets. Treat that as a useful organization pattern, not a universal rule: asset paths and loading behavior depend on your bundler and project structure.
- Keep models and textures in a predictable location that matches the asset paths used by the app.
- Load only the assets needed for the scene being displayed.
- Check the deployed build, not just the local development server, because asset paths must remain valid after deployment.
Design interaction and animation around the purpose of the scene
Decide what the visitor should be able to do or notice. A small, focused interaction can communicate more clearly than adding motion everywhere. If the scene does not need continuous motion, avoid doing unnecessary rendering work; if it does animate, evaluate the workload on the devices and screen sizes you intend to support.

React Three Fiber’s performance guidance covers reusing resources loaded from the same URL, instancing, and scaling performance. A public portfolio project also describes lazy loading, level of detail, and quality adjustment. These are techniques to evaluate, not guaranteed performance improvements for every scene. Profile the actual page and test it on lower-powered devices instead of assuming a technique will solve a bottleneck.

Build, test, and deploy the portfolio
Three.js supports npm and build-tool workflows, while its installation guide describes public directories for static assets. Deployment steps vary with the application’s framework and hosting setup, so verify that the production build can load every model and texture and that the canvas still fits its parent after the page is served.

- Test the page at target sizes: inspect the canvas, surrounding layout, and access to portfolio links on desktop and smaller screens.
- Profile the live page: look for excessive scene work and assess whether lazy loading, resource reuse, instancing, level of detail, or quality adjustment fits the measured issue.
JavaScript Mastery’s video, “Build & Deploy an Amazing 3D Portfolio with React.js & Three.js,” was published on September 6, 2024. Its chapter list covers React Three Fiber and Drei, portfolio sections, hosting setup, and deployment, so it can serve as a guided project example. Because its instructions date from 2024, check package versions, APIs, and deployment steps against current documentation rather than treating every tutorial step as current.
What makes the portfolio full-stack
Adding Three.js to a React page makes the portfolio interactive and 3D; it does not automatically make it full-stack. “Full-stack” describes the broader development work you choose to show. If the portfolio includes backend work, explain what that work does and how it connects to the interface. The cited tutorial covers a portfolio and deployment, but the available project details do not establish a particular backend architecture, API, or database to copy.
Keep the project description precise: distinguish the React interface and 3D scene from any server-side features you actually built. That gives readers a clearer account of your role and avoids implying that the visual component supplies a backend.
