The Bugaboo Donkey Duo is a side-by-side stroller designed to carry two children, including a newborn and an older sibling, with seats that can face different directions. Its defining trade-off is clear: flexible seating and useful storage come with a wide, heavy frame that can be demanding to fold, lift, store, and fit into a car.
This review focuses on the Donkey 5 Duo specifications, while separating them from hands-on evidence about its successor, the Donkey 6. Bugaboo’s US Donkey 5 page currently says the model is no longer available; its UK page showed a listing with limited-stock indications when reviewed. Availability depends on region and can change.
Which Bugaboo Donkey model does this review cover?
“Donkey Duo” can refer to more than one generation. The published measurements below are for the Bugaboo Donkey 5 Duo. The independent family test discussed later is for the Donkey 6, Bugaboo’s current US successor listing. Those experiences should not be mistaken for a direct Donkey 5 test.
For US buyers, Bugaboo labels the Donkey 5 Duo “No longer available.” In the UK, Bugaboo’s Donkey 5 listing showed a price of £1,224 against an original £1,530 and mixed stock indications when checked. These are regional, time-sensitive listing details, not a guarantee of current price or stock. Bugaboo’s US page listed the Donkey 6 double stroller at $2,169; check the product page for current availability and price.

What does the Donkey 5 Duo offer?
The Duo is a side-by-side stroller: the two children sit next to each other rather than in a front-and-back tandem arrangement. Bugaboo lists independently reversible and reclining seats, making it possible to orient each seat separately. The configuration is intended for siblings of different ages and can accommodate a newborn with an older child.
Bugaboo lists the Donkey 5 Duo for ages 0–4 years, with a maximum of 22 kg (50 lb) per seat. Its two canopies have UPF 50+ protection. The listed package includes rain covers and two baskets, alongside the stroller components.

Measure the actual opening and usable space, allowing room to maneuver the stroller into position.

How does it handle everyday use?
The closest independent hands-on evidence in the available coverage is a four-month Donkey 6 test by Mumsnet, not a Donkey 5 trial. Parent tester Beth used the Donkey 6 daily with a two-month-old and a 15-month-old, including park and shopping trips and one train journey. The test covered pavements, gravel, grass, muddy paths, a small car boot, and tighter spaces.

The tester reported smooth handling on common surfaces and liked the storage, comfort, and perceived sturdiness. She also found it harder to use on sand and rough pebbles, said it did not fit all doorways and was awkward in small shops, and described lifting it onto public transport as challenging. Folding and loading took effort; in the small car tested, the stroller occupied much of the boot, and the tester felt that folding it alone with two children was impractical. These are observations from one family’s Donkey 6 use, not established Donkey 5 test results.
Mumsnet’s displayed scores for that Donkey 6 review were performance 5, quality 5, ease of use 3, value 3, safety/stability 5, folding 3, comfort 5, and adjustability/storage 5. They are the review publisher’s category scores, not a universal rating or laboratory result.

Will the Donkey Duo fit through doors and into a car?
Bugaboo gives the Donkey 5 Duo a double-mode width of 74 cm (29.1 in). That is a useful starting point, not a promise that it will clear every doorway: frames, handles, hinges, and the angle of approach reduce usable clearance. Measure the narrowest route you expect to use, including home and building doors, lift entrances, shop aisles, and vehicle openings. The Donkey 6 family test likewise found that the successor did not fit all doorways and could be awkward in smaller shops.
Plan for transport as carefully as for width. At 19.24 kg (42.41 lb) assembled with a seat and bassinet, the Donkey 5 Duo is substantial to lift. Check the folded dimensions against your car’s boot opening and interior, not just its advertised capacity, and consider who will fold and lift it when both children are with you. A stroller that fits once dismantled may still be inconvenient if the routine requires frequent lifting or compact storage.

Newborn and car-seat compatibility
Bugaboo lists the Donkey 5 Duo for use from birth and says car-seat adapters are needed. The cited product information does not establish a universally compatible car-seat and adapter pairing. Before buying, confirm that the adapter is approved for the exact car-seat model and the Donkey 5 generation, and check which seat positions and configurations the combination allows.
How does the Donkey 6 differ?
The Donkey 6 is the successor listed by Bugaboo US, but it is a distinct model. Its current product page says the stroller converts between single and double in three clicks, and describes side-by-side, reversible and reclining seats and larger all-terrain wheels. Bugaboo says its underseat basket is 50% larger than earlier models; that is the manufacturer’s comparison claim.

Who should consider the Donkey Duo?
- It may suit you if you want two children beside each other, value independently oriented seats, and have space for a wide stroller and its fold.
- Think carefully about it if you often use narrow shops, crowded public transport, stairs, or a small car boot. The successor-model family test highlights practical friction in several of those settings.
- Check before buying if you need a specific newborn setup or car-seat combination; adapter requirements alone do not establish compatibility.
- Confirm the generation and region if shopping for a Donkey 5, since availability differs between the US and UK listings and specifications or accessories can vary by model.
CHOICE also lists a Donkey Duo as a side-by-side double stroller and marks it discontinued, but its public listing gives different dimensions and weight from Bugaboo’s Donkey 5 page. CHOICE’s expert rating and detailed test results are behind member access, so those figures cannot be treated as a substitute for a clearly identified generation’s manufacturer specifications or as evidence of its hidden test findings.
