Effective bug fixing starts by identifying the guarantee the software was supposed to uphold—not by assuming the component showing an error caused it. Reconstruct what happened, identify the violated rule or contract, correct the mechanism behind the failure, then verify that the guarantee holds under the conditions that exposed the bug.

Jose Maria Iriarte frames bug fixing as system stabilization engineering: restoring predictable behavior across the parts of a system that must work together. This is the framing of his DEV Community article, not a formal industry standard. A bug report records an observation; it does not, by itself, diagnose a cause. For example, a UI showing incorrect data might reflect stale state, a delayed response, an API mismatch, or a problem in the underlying business logic.

Iriarte puts the central question this way: “What guarantee did the system fail to uphold, and what mechanism must change to make that guarantee reliable?”

Start with the guarantee, not the visible symptom

Before selecting a fix, describe the expected behavior precisely. Include the inputs, relevant conditions, expected state transition, whether the work is synchronous or asynchronous, and any concurrency guarantees. Then express the requirement as an invariant—a condition that must remain true whenever the operation completes.

Examples include unique project identifiers, access restricted to authorized users, search results corresponding to the current query, completed updates eventually appearing in the UI, or a completed operation not being applied twice when its message is processed again.

Reconstruct the execution across boundaries

Gather evidence that lets you rebuild the sequence of events, rather than treating isolated logs as a diagnosis. Depending on the failure, examine:

  • Inputs, decision data, logs, exceptions, and correlation identifiers.
  • HTTP requests and responses, including the data actually sent and returned.
  • Database queries, transaction boundaries, and overlapping writes.
  • Task completion or cancellation, message publication and consumption, and downstream processing.
  • Deployed versions, configuration, dependencies, migrations, and the artifact running in the affected environment.

Follow the operation through the relevant client, API, domain logic, database, event consumer, UI reconciliation, and runtime environment. The point is to find where the guarantee failed, not to assign blame to a particular layer.

Match the fix to the failure mechanism

A similar symptom can result from different defects. Classify the mechanism before choosing a remedy:

Logic and business rules

Code can run without errors and still produce the wrong business result. Check the intended rule and its boundary conditions; a successful execution is not proof that the result is correct.

State and lifecycle

An operation may succeed while the UI, cache, shared store, or background work fails to reflect the intended state transition. Trace when state changes, when responses arrive, and whether the relevant component or task is still active.

API and integration contracts

Components may run normally while disagreeing about data shapes, types, dates, enum serialization, endpoints, headers, or API versions. Inspect actual requests and responses instead of relying only on what each side is expected to send.

Data and database behavior

Duplicate inserts, lost updates, missing transaction boundaries, deadlocks, and integrity violations require attention to the database operation and its concurrency conditions. An existence check alone does not guarantee uniqueness: two requests can both check before either inserts. Enforce the guarantee at the appropriate data boundary and handle conflicts deliberately.

Exceptions and crashes

An exception shows that execution failed; it does not necessarily explain why an assumption was false. Broadly suppressing an exception can make a failed operation look successful, obscuring rather than repairing the violated guarantee.

Authentication and authorization

Establishing who a user is and deciding whether that user may access a particular resource are separate checks. Trace both when investigating an access failure or a security boundary problem.

Messaging and eventual consistency

A successful request may finish before downstream consumers have processed its effects. Account for processing delays, failed or duplicate deliveries, ordering, and whether a retry is safe. If a repeated message can apply a completed operation twice, the processing mechanism must protect that invariant.

Environment and deployment

Local success does not establish that production has the same configuration, dependencies, runtime, migrations, or artifact. Compare the deployed conditions with the ones under which the behavior was expected.

Compare plausible remedies by the guarantee they restore

When several fixes seem possible, ask which one restores the invariant at the mechanism that violated it. Check whether it remains valid under concurrent work and dependency failures, respects the component or request lifecycle, and accounts for assumptions that another system boundary can break.

A retry can be useful when an operation is safe to repeat, but unsafe retries can create duplicates. A null check can prevent one crash without correcting why required data is missing. Clearing a cache or refreshing a UI can hide stale state without fixing propagation. These remedies are not inherently wrong; they are unreliable substitutes for diagnosing the failure mechanism.

Verify the invariant under failure conditions

Recreate the conditions that exposed the defect, then test the guarantee—not just whether the original error message disappeared. Choose checks that reflect the suspected mechanism:

  • Use overlapping operations to test race conditions.
  • Send concurrent requests to test duplicate-write protection.
  • Navigate away or change context while responses are delayed to test lifecycle handling.
  • Use invalid and boundary inputs to test domain rules.
  • Exercise delayed, failed, or repeated message processing to test eventual consistency and retry safety.
  • Verify behavior with the production configuration, dependencies, migrations, runtime, and artifact when investigating a deployment issue.
