The best-value starting point for a PS5 monitor is a 1440p display that accepts a 120Hz signal. Confirm that the exact model supports PS5 VRR if variable refresh matters to you. A monitor advertised at 165Hz or 240Hz is not automatically a better PS5 monitor, because the console’s supported output modes, the game and the monitor’s HDMI implementation determine what you actually get.

Best budget PS5 monitor: the short answer

For most desk-based PS5 players, target a 27-inch 1440p monitor with a genuine 120Hz mode and documented PS5 VRR compatibility. This combination is usually a more sensible value target than paying for a very high PC refresh rate that the console cannot use.

RTINGS’ 2026 guide currently places the KOORUI S2721PM in its budget category. RTINGS says it replaced the AOC Q27G3XMN because the KOORUI supports VRR with PS5. That is a current review-site recommendation, not a guaranteed winner in every country or at every price. Check the exact model number, HDMI behavior, local listing, warranty and current price before buying. RTINGS’ PS5/PS5 Pro monitor guide provides the cited recommendation.

Option What the evidence says What to verify before purchase
KOORUI S2721PM RTINGS’ current budget-category pick; its PS5 VRR support is the stated reason it replaced the previous pick. Exact SKU, region, price, stock, warranty, 1440p/120Hz behavior and VRR on the HDMI input.
AOC Q27G3XMN Previous RTINGS budget recommendation; the current guide says it was replaced in that category. Do not treat the older recommendation as the current winner. Verify current firmware, PS5 VRR behavior and local value.

No single “under $X” ranking is reliable here because the intended country, currency and maximum spend were not specified. Monitor prices and availability change by market, so use the compatibility criteria below and then compare current local listings.

What a PS5 monitor must support

1440p output

1440p is an official PS5 output option. Sony states that a compatible TV or PC monitor must support 1440p at 60Hz, or 1440p at both 60Hz and 120Hz, for the corresponding output modes. Sony also describes 1440p output with supersampling from higher native game resolutions. Read the complete PS5 features documentation when checking a display’s capabilities.

“1440p video output on PS5 requires a TV or PC monitor that supports 1440p/60Hz, or 1440p/60Hz and 120Hz.” — Sony’s official PS5 features page

A 1440p monitor can therefore be a strong middle ground: sharper than 1080p at a typical desktop distance, less expensive than many 4K high-refresh displays, and compatible with the console’s 1440p testing option. The monitor still has to accept the signal through the specific HDMI input you intend to use.

120Hz output

PS5 has a 120Hz output setting for games that support a 120Hz frame rate. A monitor’s 144Hz, 165Hz or 240Hz headline specification describes its maximum capability with suitable equipment; it does not make PS5 games run above the console’s supported output. Confirm that the display accepts 1440p at 120Hz if that is the mode you want, rather than checking only the maximum refresh number.

Some games offer a performance mode targeting higher frame rates, while others remain at lower frame rates or use different resolution modes. The game, selected PS5 setting and monitor all have to agree before 120Hz appears as an active signal.

VRR on PS5

Variable refresh rate can synchronize the display’s refresh timing with the console’s changing frame rate, reducing tearing and making uneven performance less distracting. Sony documents PS5 VRR with compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR displays and warns that results vary by display and game. Compatibility must therefore be checked for the exact monitor, HDMI input and firmware.

Do not infer PS5 VRR support from a PC adaptive-sync label alone. RTINGS’ console-compatibility testing explanation notes that HDMI 2.1 bandwidth itself is not required for HDMI Forum VRR. Conversely, an HDMI 2.1 label by itself is not proof that a particular monitor will deliver the VRR behavior you want with PS5.

Which resolution and refresh combination is best?

Target Strengths Trade-offs Best fit
1080p, up to 120Hz Usually the simplest and least expensive route; 120Hz can still be useful in supported games. Less desktop sharpness and less image detail than 1440p or 4K. Small screens, tight budgets or seating farther from the display.
1440p at 60/120Hz Sharper than 1080p while retaining a practical high-refresh target; a strong value category for a desk setup. Every model does not provide the same PS5 VRR behavior; verify the 120Hz mode at 1440p. Most players who want a balanced budget PS5 monitor.
4K at 60Hz Native 4K detail when the game and PS5 output use it. Does not provide the same 120Hz experience as a 4K/120Hz display; high-refresh 4K models generally cost more. Players who prioritize resolution over high frame rates.
4K at 120Hz Combines native 4K with a high-refresh mode in supported games and equipment. Typically requires a larger budget and careful HDMI 2.1/VRR verification. Players who specifically value 4K detail and 120Hz and accept the higher cost.

For a budget purchase, start by deciding whether you value smoother supported performance or maximum pixel detail. A 1440p/120Hz monitor is the practical default; choose 4K/120Hz when native 4K is more important and the price remains acceptable in your market.

How to evaluate the current budget candidates

KOORUI S2721PM

RTINGS names the S2721PM as its budget-category option in the 2026 PS5/PS5 Pro guide and specifically cites PS5 VRR support. That makes it a useful starting point for a shortlist, particularly if VRR is a priority. The recommendation does not establish a universal price, stock level or warranty in your country, and it does not replace checking the exact retail SKU.

  • Confirm that the listing identifies S2721PM, not a visually similar model with different ports or firmware.
  • Check the supported PS5 modes at the monitor’s HDMI input, including 1440p/120Hz if that is your target.
  • Look for model-specific evidence of PS5 VRR rather than relying only on generic adaptive-sync wording.
  • Compare the local price with other 1440p/120Hz displays after shipping, tax and warranty terms.

AOC Q27G3XMN

The Q27G3XMN remains a relevant comparison because the same RTINGS page identifies it as the previous budget recommendation. However, RTINGS says it was replaced in the current budget category. Treat it as an alternative to investigate, not as the current RTINGS winner, and verify its present PS5 VRR behavior and local value before buying.

Budget, region and price checks

A “budget” monitor has no universal price ceiling. A model that is excellent value in one country can be poor value after import costs or a local sale ends. Before comparing products, write down:

  • Your country and currency.
  • Your maximum delivered price, including tax and shipping.
  • Whether the monitor must be new, or whether a reputable used/refurbished option is acceptable.
  • The return period and dead-pixel policy.
  • How many HDMI devices you will connect, such as a PS5 and a PC.

Recheck the listing immediately before ordering. Stock, promotions and firmware can change, and the same product family may contain regional variants with different inputs or included accessories.

Screen size and desk distance

A 27-inch panel is a common fit for a desktop because it gives 1440p enough pixel density to look crisp at normal close seating without requiring the desk depth of a very large screen. A 24-inch 1080p display can be easier to fit and cheaper, while a 32-inch 1440p panel gives a larger image but looks less dense at the same viewing distance.

Choose the size based on where your eyes will be, not only on the diagonal measurement. If you sit close, a smaller or denser screen can be more comfortable. If you sit several feet away, a larger panel may be easier to read. Measure the desk, stand footprint and viewing distance before ordering.

Panel, contrast and HDR priorities

Contrast and dark-room play

Panel technology affects the experience beyond resolution. A display with stronger native contrast can make dark scenes look less gray, while a fast-response panel may prioritize motion clarity and viewing consistency. Compare measured or documented contrast where available, but do not assume that a panel label alone predicts the result in every room.

Brightness and HDR

HDR support on a specification sheet does not guarantee convincing HDR. A useful HDR experience depends on brightness, contrast, local-dimming behavior, highlight control and the game itself. On a budget monitor, decide whether you primarily want SDR clarity and 120Hz smoothness or are willing to pay more for stronger HDR hardware. Treat an HDR badge as a compatibility feature, not a quality rating.

Viewing angle and room layout

If the monitor will be viewed from the side or shared, viewing-angle consistency matters. A single-player desk setup lets you optimize directly in front of the panel, while a couch or multi-person arrangement may favor a display whose image remains stable away from center.

Ports and cables

Count the HDMI inputs before buying. One HDMI input is enough for a PS5-only setup, but two can be useful if you also connect a PC, streaming device or another console. Check which input supports the desired resolution, 120Hz signal and VRR; ports on the same monitor do not always have identical capabilities.

Sony recommends using the high-performance HDMI cable supplied with the PS5. The included cable is normally sufficient for the console’s supported features. Buy a replacement only if the original is damaged, lost or too short for your installation. A new cable cannot make a monitor support a mode that its HDMI input does not accept.

PS5 setup: verify the monitor before gaming

Use the console’s own output information rather than trusting a retailer’s generic specification. Sony’s PS5 resolution and video-output guide explains the relevant settings and testing process.

Troubleshooting common PS5 monitor problems

The PS5 shows 60Hz instead of 120Hz

  • Check that the game actually supports a 120Hz frame-rate mode.
  • Confirm that the monitor accepts 120Hz at the chosen resolution, not merely at a lower resolution through a different input.
  • Use the supplied PS5 HDMI cable and connect directly to the compatible HDMI port.
  • Revisit Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and run the 1440p test again.
  • Check the monitor’s input or overclock menu for a setting that limits the refresh rate.

VRR is unavailable

  • Verify PS5 VRR support for the exact model and HDMI input; do not rely solely on a PC FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync label.
  • Install any available monitor firmware update according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Enable VRR on both the PS5 and monitor, then restart the console.
  • Test with a game that supports VRR. Sony notes that results can vary by display and game.

1440p is missing

  • Run the console’s 1440p output test while connected directly to the monitor.
  • Try the monitor’s other HDMI input if the specifications identify different capabilities.
  • Remove an AV receiver, switch or capture device temporarily, since an intermediate device can change the reported modes.
  • Check the exact model number; a similar-looking regional SKU may have different video support.

The image flickers or goes black

  • Reseat the HDMI cable and check for visible damage.
  • Disable VRR temporarily to determine whether the problem is tied to variable refresh.
  • Return the monitor to its default input settings and test at 60Hz.
  • If 60Hz is stable but 120Hz is not, verify the monitor’s documented 120Hz limit at the selected resolution.

When a 4K/120Hz monitor is worth the extra cost

Choose 4K/120Hz instead of 1440p/120Hz when native 4K detail is a primary goal, you sit close enough to appreciate the additional pixels, and the local price is within your ceiling. Confirm the monitor’s 4K/120Hz and VRR behavior on the exact HDMI input. Do not pay for a 4K label alone if your priority is smooth 120Hz play and the model only accepts 60Hz at 4K.

Using the monitor with a PC as well

For a mixed PS5-and-PC desk, consider the PC’s graphics hardware, the number of inputs and whether you need a refresh rate above 120Hz for PC games. Higher PC refresh rates can be useful on the computer, but they should not be the deciding factor for PS5 compatibility. Make sure the monitor can switch inputs conveniently and that the desired PS5 mode remains available on the HDMI connection rather than only through DisplayPort.

Final buying checklist

  • Resolution: 1440p is the default value target; choose 4K when native detail matters more than cost.
  • Refresh: confirm 120Hz at the exact PS5 resolution you plan to use.
  • VRR: verify model-specific PS5 behavior for the HDMI input and current firmware.
  • Size: match the diagonal to desk depth and viewing distance.
  • Image priorities: weigh contrast, brightness, HDR implementation and viewing angle instead of treating an HDR label as proof of quality.
  • Ports: count HDMI inputs and identify which one supports your target mode.
  • Cable: start with the PS5’s supplied HDMI cable.
  • Price: compare delivered local cost, warranty, returns and stock on the date you buy.
  • Testing: use the PS5 video-output screen and 1440p test after installation.

For most buyers, a verified 1440p/120Hz monitor with PS5 VRR support is the most balanced budget choice. The KOORUI S2721PM is a current review-site starting point, while the AOC Q27G3XMN is a previous recommendation rather than the current budget-category pick. Treat both as models to verify against your market, not as permanent price rankings.
