For an affordable DSLR that can record 4K, the Canon EOS Rebel SL3—called the EOS 250D in Europe—is the most direct starting point. Its vari-angle screen is useful for filming from different positions, but its 4K video is heavily cropped and its video autofocus is not the fastest. If you want a more advanced body and can accept a narrower 4K view, consider the Nikon D7500; if Full HD is enough, a used Nikon D5600 is another option.
Which budget DSLR makes the most sense for video?
Digital Camera World identifies the Canon EOS Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D as a budget DSLR video pick, citing its 4K recording and vari-angle screen. That makes it a practical fit for a buyer who wants an articulated display and the option to record 4K without moving beyond DSLR cameras. The recommendation is editorial, not a Canon claim. Digital Camera World’s DSLR video guide discusses the pick, while Canon’s EOS 250D specifications provide the manufacturer’s reference for that European model.
What are the trade-offs between the three options?
| Camera | Best fit | Video details | Main caveat |
| Canon EOS Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D | Budget buyer who wants a vari-angle screen and 4K capability | 4K recording; vari-angle screen | 4K is heavily cropped, and video autofocus is not the fastest, according to Digital Camera World’s guide |
| Nikon D7500 | Buyer seeking a more advanced all-round DSLR who accepts a cropped 4K view | 4K at a 1.5x crop; Full HD up to 60fps, according to Digital Camera World’s 2026 comparison | The 4K crop narrows the view; it is an ageing model |
| Nikon D5600 | Used-market buyer who is satisfied with Full HD | Full HD up to 60p; no 4K, according to Digital Camera World’s 2026 comparison | Discontinued |

Choose the SL3 / 250D for flexibility, not uncropped 4K
The articulated screen can help when the camera is positioned for a self-recording shot or at an unusual angle. But the heavy 4K crop changes framing: a lens shows a narrower view in that mode than you might expect. If you plan to record mostly in 4K, account for that tighter framing before buying. The source also cautions that video autofocus is not the fastest, so do not assume it will keep up with every moving subject.

- Use the EOS Utility Webcam Beta Software (Mac and Windows) to turn your compatible Canon camera into a high-quality webcam. Compatible Lenses- Canon EF Lenses (including EF-S lenses, excluding EF-M lenses)
Choose the D7500 if its 4K crop and Full HD option suit your work
The D7500 offers 4K with a 1.5x crop, so it is worth considering when a narrower angle of view is acceptable. Digital Camera World reports Full HD recording up to 60fps as well. Decide which mode you will actually use: the 4K crop and Full HD frame-rate option are different trade-offs, not interchangeable advantages.
Choose the D5600 only if Full HD is sufficient
The D5600 is a discontinued model with no 4K. Its Full HD recording tops out at 60p in the cited comparison, making it a possible used-market choice for buyers who do not need 4K. Do not buy it expecting a firmware setting or menu option to add 4K.

What to check before buying
There is no single dependable current price for “budget” across markets, and prices and availability change. Check the live listing in your region, including whether the camera is new or used and what the kit includes. For a used body, verify condition, battery health, seller return terms, and the model’s regional name; listings may use Rebel SL3 or EOS 250D for the Canon. Confirm the included lens, too, since it affects the framing you can achieve—particularly important with cropped 4K.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Choose the video resolution you need before comparing bodies; the D5600 is Full HD only.
- Check whether the 4K crop on the Canon or Nikon will make your intended framing too tight.
- Consider screen articulation and how you will focus in live view, rather than judging a video camera only by still-photo specifications.
- For a used or discontinued camera, inspect the specific unit and seller terms instead of assuming every listing is equivalent.
Is a DSLR the right kind of camera for video?
This shortlist stays within the DSLR constraint in the query. The buying guide notes that mirrorless cameras are often stronger for video, so someone without a DSLR requirement may want to broaden the search. Within these DSLR choices, the key distinctions are the Canon’s articulated screen and cropped 4K, the D7500’s 1.5x-cropped 4K and Full HD up to 60fps, and the D5600’s Full HD-only recording.
