Budget Direct renters contents insurance is designed to cover your belongings, not the building you rent. Its published summary includes legal liability, limited cover for belongings temporarily away from home, and temporary accommodation after an insured event. Whether it suits you depends on your replacement-value estimate, the policy limits and exclusions, your excess, and the quote you receive—not on a general claim that it is the cheapest or best option.

Do I need contents insurance as a renter?

You may want contents insurance if you would struggle to replace your belongings after a covered loss. Budget Direct identifies renters, people who have moved in with a partner, long-term house-sitters, and people renting temporarily during renovations as potential customers. The insurer says renters generally do not need to insure the building they rent; that is the landlord’s responsibility. Contents insurance is for your own property.

Budget Direct’s examples of contents include furniture and furnishings, electrical appliances, kitchenware, clothes and shoes, and some valuables. Fitted carpets and rugs, plus internal blinds, curtains, and window coverings, are also listed. Categories and individual items can be subject to limits, and some items may need to be specified. Check the applicable policy wording and your certificate for how your belongings are treated. Budget Direct’s renters cover summary and its contents cover comparison provide starting points, not a substitute for those documents.

Does renters insurance cover my landlord’s building?

No. This policy is presented as contents insurance for a renter’s belongings, not insurance for the rental property’s structure. Building insurance is the landlord’s responsibility. If you are unsure whether an item belongs to you or is part of the property, check your lease and ask the insurer how it is classified before relying on cover.

What does Budget Direct contents insurance cover?

Budget Direct’s public summary lists cover for specified insured events and several additional benefits. The figures below are maximums or caps described on its live renters page; they do not guarantee payment. Eligibility, conditions, excesses, and the applicable policy documents determine what is payable.

Benefit What Budget Direct says Important qualification
Temporary accommodation Additional temporary accommodation costs above your usual rent for your family and pets, up to 10% of the contents sum insured. Available if an insured event makes the rental unliveable; capped at a maximum of a year or until the limit is reached.
Legal liability Up to $20 million for death or physical injury to other people, or loss or damage to another person’s property caused by an accident. Check the policy wording for the circumstances, exclusions, and conditions that apply.
Belongings away from home Cover may apply for up to 90 days away from the insured home, up to 20% of the sum insured. Subject to the events and conditions in the PDS and the stated limit.
Replacement of locks Up to $1,000 for stolen keys, locks, and key codes. Check the policy wording for eligibility and claim conditions.
Unattached equipment Up to $500 for loss or damage to unattached equipment or accessories, with examples involving vehicles, watercraft, trailers, and caravans. Check the policy wording to confirm which items and events qualify.
Debris removal and storage Removal and disposal of damaged contents, and storage of undamaged contents while the rented home is repaired. The public summary does not specify a dollar limit; consult the applicable policy documents.

These limits come from Budget Direct’s renters insurance page. Treat them as a summary of the insurer’s offer, not a full account of claim terms.

Which events are covered, and what optional cover is available?

Budget Direct’s general coverage explainer lists storm, including cyclone, and rainwater; fire; theft or attempted theft; escape of liquid; lightning; impact; breakage of specified glass, ceramic, or sanitary fixtures; malicious damage, vandalism, riot, or civil commotion; explosion; and earthquake or tsunami. Its explainer describes flood cover as optional, so do not assume it is included in a renters quote. Check that flood cover is selected and shown in your policy documents if you need it. Budget Direct’s cover explainer summarizes events; the PDS and any supplement govern the actual cover.

Optional extensions listed for renters

  • Accidental Damage Cover: described as cover for sudden, unintended, and unexpected damage, with examples such as spilling wine on a couch or dropping a vase.
  • Motor Burnout Cover: described as applying to electric motors under 10 years old damaged by electric current or a power surge.
  • Commercial Storage Cover: listed as an optional extension on the renters page.

Do not assume an extension applies automatically. Confirm availability, limits, exclusions, and the premium impact in your quote and policy documents. Budget Direct’s coverage explainer also gives examples of exclusions or issues that may affect cover, including pre-existing damage, leaking showers, lack of maintenance, vermin and insect damage, faulty workmanship, chemical damage, and tenant-caused loss unless relevant optional cover applies. The precise treatment depends on the current wording; check the PDS rather than treating this list as a definitive statement about every contents claim.

How much contents insurance do I need?

Estimate what it would cost to replace the belongings you want insured, rather than using what you originally paid. Budget Direct recommends calculating replacement cost and offers a contents calculator. Work through each room and include less obvious items such as clothing, kitchenware, linens, electronics, and furnishings. Keep a record of values and check whether valuables have individual or category limits; a total sum insured alone may not resolve those limits.

What excess will I have to pay?

The amount depends on the excess offered and selected for your particular quote and policy. Budget Direct says choosing a higher excess may reduce the premium, but it means paying more yourself on an eligible claim. Compare the excess shown in the quote with the policy documents, and choose an amount you could afford to pay if you needed to claim. The public summary does not establish a single excess that applies to every renter.

How much does it cost, and is it good value?

There is no single price established for all renters: premiums depend on the applicant and the cover selected. Budget Direct advertises a 15% discount on the first year for a new policy bought online, subject to conditions. This is a promotional discount, not a quote or evidence that the resulting premium is cheaper than another insurer’s. The insurer also says paying annually or choosing a higher excess may reduce cost; check the actual quote and payment terms for your circumstances.

To compare value, get like-for-like quotes and consider the contents sum insured, insured events and flood treatment, limits on particular items, away-from-home cover, temporary accommodation, optional extensions, excess, and premium. The available published information does not establish that Budget Direct is the cheapest or best policy.

Which policy documents should I check?

Use the PDS, any Supplementary PDS (SPDS), and your certificate of insurance to confirm the cover that applies to your policy. The applicable documents can depend on when you received your quote or renewed. Auto & General’s official insurance document index identifies the Budget Direct Home Insurance PDS for new policies quoted on or after 21 September 2023 and renewals on or after 29 October 2023. The index also lists a June 2026 SPDS for new quotes on or after 25 June 2026 and renewals on or after 2 August 2026. Check the index and the documents attached to your own quote or renewal to identify the wording that applies.

The index’s linked PDFs were not accessible when this information was compiled, so detailed interpretations of that June 2026 supplement are not established here. For a particular claim, exclusion, limit, or optional extension, read the current wording and certificate rather than relying only on the online summary.
