Budget Direct Home and Contents Insurance covers specified insured events, but it is not an all-risks policy: flood is optional, exclusions and benefit limits matter, and the price and eligibility depend on your property and selected cover. The useful way to judge it is against your own quote and Insurance Certificate, then compare those documents with alternatives on the same cover—not on a headline discount or an unverified claim that one insurer is cheapest.
What the policy covers—and what it does not
Budget Direct’s summary lists cover for storm, including cyclone, and rainwater; fire; theft or attempted theft; escape of liquid, such as a burst pipe; impact, such as a fallen tree; breakage of glass, ceramic and sanitary fixtures; malicious damage, vandalism or riot; explosion; and earthquake and tsunami. The list is subject to the applicable policy wording, conditions, limits and exclusions. Budget Direct’s cover summary is not a substitute for the PDS and any Supplementary PDS (SPDS).
Flood is a separate decision
Flood is an optional cover, subject to eligibility and underwriting, and may add to the premium. Check the quote and certificate to confirm whether it is selected, and read the policy definition of flood rather than assuming it includes every kind of water damage. Storm or rainwater cover and flood cover are not interchangeable labels.
Exclusions can matter as much as insured events
Budget Direct gives pre-existing damage, leaking showers, lack of maintenance, vermin and insect damage, faulty workmanship and chemical damage as examples of damage that may not be covered. These examples are not a complete exclusions list. The PDS and applicable SPDS set out the definitions and event-specific conditions. Tenant-caused loss is not covered unless the relevant optional landlord cover has been selected. Landlord cover options are subject to availability and policy terms.

How home and contents cover differ
The home component is for the insured building; contents cover is for belongings such as furniture, electrical appliances, clothing, valuables and fitted carpets. Each component has its own declared sum insured and terms. The Insurance Certificate records the selected sums insured, excesses, optional covers and specified contents. Budget Direct’s product information describes benefits including temporary accommodation for up to 12 months when the home is uninhabitable due to an insured event, and legal liability cover up to $20 million. Those are insurer-published maximums or summaries, not a promise that every loss receives that amount; policy terms, limits and exclusions apply.
Portable and high-value belongings need special attention
Contents cover at the insured home does not automatically provide broad cover for valuables taken away from home. Budget Direct says Personal Effects Cover is needed for portable cover. Its FAQ states that unspecified personal effects have a maximum of $1,000 per item, with an event-level total limit selected from $1,000 to $5,000; specified personal effects are individually described and valued. Optional cover requires additional premium and insurer approval. Check whether your phone, jewellery, camera or other frequently carried valuables need to be specified, and whether the selected limit is enough. Personal effects FAQ.
Optional cover and excesses to inspect
Depending on the policy and selection, listed options include flood, motor burnout, accidental damage, personal effects, commercial storage and sum insured safeguard. Landlord options include tenant default and tenant theft or malicious damage. Do not assume an option is active because it appeared in a quote flow: verify it on the Insurance Certificate.

Budget Direct’s policy-options page lists selectable basic excesses from $100 to $5,000. A fixed excess may also apply based on perceived risk and underwriting; landlord cover may have a four-weeks-rent excess, and earthquake or tsunami a $500 excess. Confirm all applicable excesses in your own certificate, since more than one excess or a specific event excess may affect what you pay on a claim. Policy options and excess information.
Which policy documents apply to your quote?
Auto & General’s document register lists a Budget Direct Home Insurance PDS for new policies quoted on or after 21 September 2023 and renewals on or after 29 October 2023. It also lists a June 2026 SPDS for new policies quoted on or after 25 June 2026 and renewals on or after 2 August 2026. The register says to use the quote or Insurance Certificate to determine which PDS Part B applies. Match your quote or renewal date to the document set and check whether an SPDS applies; do not assume a general webpage summary is the operative wording. Auto & General policy document register.
Budget Direct describes the certificate as recording key selections, while the PDS and SPDS contain terms, conditions, limits and exclusions. Save the exact document versions issued with the quote and renewal so you can read the wording alongside the certificate. Budget Direct PDS information.

What affects your quote and whether cover is available?
Budget Direct asks about the property address, occupancy, building type, age and construction materials, estimated replacement cost, business use, insurance and claims history, and optional extras. It asks about claims during the previous five years. For contents, you provide an estimated total value and information about high-value or portable belongings. These details influence underwriting, eligibility and price, so an estimate that is too low can leave you with inadequate cover, while inaccurate property information can cause problems at claim time. Quote preparation information.
Premiums are quote-specific: no representative market price or like-for-like competitor quote is available here. Budget Direct says annual payment may be slightly cheaper overall than paying by instalments, but compare the total cost over the same payment period in your own quotes. Understand the discount terms, not just the advertised figure
Budget Direct’s homepage terms for new policies quoted on or after 20 August 2026 state a 15% online discount for the first year when purchased or quoted online; a valid online quote reference may also qualify when buying later through its contact centre, subject to the stated terms. A site savings claim based on customer-provided comparisons for a defined 2026 period is not an independent market-wide price comparison. Confirm the terms applying to your quote and do not assume every buyer qualifies for a maximum combined discount. Budget Direct homepage and current discount terms.

There is also a regulatory issue worth understanding. ASIC said it sued Auto & General over alleged misrepresentations in Budget Direct discount advertising. The regulator said the advertisements ran between March 2020 and July 2024 and that about 39,000 customers lost an online discount after making policy amendments during that period. ASIC’s release said court orders were made by consent for progression of the matter on 30 March 2026; that is not a final finding that the allegations were proven. The release does not establish the latest outcome of the case. ASIC’s 2026 media release.

There is no substantiated basis here to rank Budget Direct as cheaper, better or worse overall than competitors: no independent live-premium comparison or independently measured claims-outcome comparison is established. What to expect if you make a claim
Budget Direct says claimants should take reasonable steps to prevent further loss, report theft, attempted theft, malicious damage or vehicle impact to police, and provide incident details and supporting documents. Claims are assessed against the specific policy and may be accepted in full, partly accepted or declined. The insurer cites an inactive policy, pre-existing damage and an applicable exclusion as possible reasons for a partial or declined claim. Claims information.
This explains the stated process, not claim acceptance rates, complaint rates or comparative service quality. If dissatisfied, Budget Direct says it will acknowledge a complaint within 24 hours or as soon as practicable, and refer an unresolved complaint to its Customer Disputes Resolution Team if it has not been resolved to the customer’s satisfaction within five business days. If dissatisfied with the final decision, a customer may complain to AFCA. Budget Direct complaint guidance.
Who should consider it?
It may suit an Australian household whose quote offers the needed building and contents cover at an acceptable total price, provided the household is comfortable with the selected excesses and any optional cover required. It is a poor fit if you assume flood is automatic, need portable valuables protection but have not selected it, or have not checked whether the sums insured and item limits match what you would need to replace. The decisive evidence is your applicable PDS/SPDS, quote and certificate—not a generic recommendation.
