The strongest case for a five-year Android phone is a published update commitment that covers the whole ownership period—but software support alone cannot guarantee five years of good battery life, speed, repairability, or parts availability. Among these five budget and midrange candidates, the Google Pixel 10a has the clearest support promise in the available evidence: Google lists seven years of operating-system and security updates for it.
The Google Pixel 9a has the same stated update duration, while Samsung’s Galaxy A27 5G has an “up to” six-year commitment and select-market availability. The Samsung Galaxy A57 and Nothing Phone (4a) Pro are worth investigating, but their support terms here come from secondary reporting rather than manufacturer policy pages. Prices and availability depend on country, so check local listings before choosing.
How to judge whether a phone can make it five years
There are two different software clocks to check: major Android or operating-system upgrades, which bring new platform versions, and security updates, which address vulnerabilities. A manufacturer can promise different durations for each. The period also has a start date; it may begin at launch or at first sale in a specified market, rather than on the day you buy the phone.
Even a five-year or longer update window is not a five-year durability guarantee. Battery capacity declines with use, performance needs change, and the availability and cost of repairs vary. The list below is therefore a shortlist based chiefly on update support, not a claim that each phone has been proven to remain fast or trouble-free for five years.

Which one fits your five-year plan?
For the clearest long-support commitment: Google Pixel 10a
Google’s official support policy gives the Pixel 10a seven years of both OS and security updates, making it the clearest support-first option in this group. Google measures that period from the phone’s first availability on Google Store in the US, so the remaining support window depends on when you buy it. Confirm the policy and the model’s availability in your own market before purchase.
For a supported alternative with known launch specifications: Google Pixel 9a
The Pixel 9a is also covered by Google’s seven-year policy. Google announced a 6.3-inch display, 48 MP main and 13 MP ultrawide rear cameras, and IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating. Its $499 US starting price was announced at launch in March 2025; it should not be treated as its current selling price. Those specifications do not establish long-term battery health or repair costs.
For a Samsung option with a qualified six-year promise: Galaxy A27 5G
Samsung describes the Galaxy A27 5G commitment as “up to” six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and “up to” six years of security updates, counted from initial global launch. Samsung announced select-market availability beginning July 3, 2026. Its stated hardware includes a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 120 Hz refresh and a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor. Check that the model is sold in your country and that the local variant receives the support terms you expect.

For a Samsung midrange candidate needing policy verification: Galaxy A57
Tom’s Guide reports six numbered Android updates and six calendar years of security updates for the 2026 Galaxy A57. Because those terms were not verified against Samsung’s policy for the intended market, confirm them with Samsung before treating this as a firm five-year-support choice. The available information does not establish a current local price or a comparable performance, battery, or repairability assessment.

For longer security coverage than major-version coverage: Nothing Phone (4a) Pro
Tom’s Guide reports three major Android updates but six years of security updates for the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro. That distinction matters: the reported security window may cover a five-year ownership plan, while the major-version upgrade count is shorter. Verify the exact terms for your regional model with Nothing before buying; the reporting cited here was not manufacturer-confirmed.

- Start date and remaining coverage: Ask when the update period begins and how much time remains if you buy after launch. Google explicitly starts its Pixel commitment at first US Google Store availability; Samsung gives the A27’s security period from initial global launch.
- Local model and policy: Match the phone’s exact name and regional variant to the manufacturer’s support terms. A “select markets” announcement or a reported policy does not establish availability and identical coverage everywhere.
- Battery and repairs: Check local repair options, replacement-part access, and battery-replacement pricing. The support durations listed above do not establish battery performance after years of use or guarantee parts availability.
- Performance headroom: Consider whether the processor and memory configuration suit your likely apps and workload. Android Authority’s test-based analysis treats performance headroom as a separate consideration from update duration; the information available here does not provide comparable benchmark results for all five phones.
- Total cost and configuration: Compare the current price in your country, storage and RAM configuration, and any local warranty terms. The Pixel 9a’s announced US launch price is not a current market quote, and no consistent current-price comparison is established for this list.
- Physical protection: A screen protector and case can reduce some everyday damage risks, but neither extends software support or guarantees the phone will last five years.
Bottom line
For a five-year plan centered on software support, start with the Pixel 10a or Pixel 9a and verify the remaining coverage in your market. The Galaxy A27 5G is a plausible alternative where Samsung’s qualified commitment applies. Treat the Galaxy A57 and Nothing Phone (4a) Pro as candidates whose reported terms need manufacturer confirmation. Whichever model you choose, assess price, repair access, battery replacement, and performance separately from the update promise.
