There is no verified setting or guaranteed workaround that blocks the browser scanning alleged in the BrowserGate controversy. You can take cautious steps to reduce the extension information a site may be able to detect: remove extensions you do not need, and consider using a separate browser or profile for sensitive LinkedIn activity. Those precautions are not proven BrowserGate-specific fixes.
What BrowserGate alleges—and what LinkedIn says
BrowserGate is the name used for allegations by the advocacy group Fairlinked about LinkedIn scanning for browser extensions and collecting browser or device signals. Fairlinked describes a broader system operating in Chrome-based browsers; those technical details and any counts should be understood as the group’s claims, not as independently verified findings. LinkedIn acknowledges looking for browser extensions. In a statement quoted by Ars Technica on April 8, 2026, the company said: “To protect the privacy of our members, their data, and to ensure site stability, we do look for extensions that scrape data without members’ consent or otherwise violate LinkedIn’s Terms of Service.” LinkedIn has said the detection supports technical defenses and site stability and that it does not use the data to infer sensitive information. What the September 2026 court ruling decided
On September 10, 2026, Ars Technica reported that a federal judge dismissed two related lawsuits because the plaintiffs had not adequately alleged personal, concrete harm needed for standing. The judge found they had not sufficiently alleged that their own extensions conveyed private information, allowed them to amend their claims, and expressed doubt about their prospects. The ruling did not decide whether LinkedIn’s practices were lawful or validate the alleged scanning. Ars Technica’s September 10, 2026 report
Practical steps to limit potential exposure
Remove extensions you do not use
Review your browser’s installed extensions and uninstall those you no longer need. If a site can detect extension identifiers through the method Fairlinked describes, having fewer extensions installed could mean fewer identifiers are exposed. This is a reasonable precaution, not a tested BrowserGate-specific fix.

Separate sensitive activity
If you are concerned about the allegations, you could avoid visiting LinkedIn in a browser you believe may be in scope or use a separate browser or profile for sensitive activity. Fairlinked says the alleged scan targets Chrome-based browsers, but the reviewed sources do not independently verify behavior across all browsers or establish that switching browsers prevents fingerprinting. A separate profile is a precaution, not an assurance that activity cannot be linked.
Use ordinary care when installing extensions
Install extensions only from publishers you trust, and check requested permissions before adding one. This is sound general browser hygiene, but it does not directly prevent a website from reading signals exposed by the browser.

What these precautions cannot promise
- The available reporting does not establish a specific browser setting that opts users out of the alleged scanning.
- It does not establish that users can erase information already collected or that another browser is immune.
- A VPN, webcam cover, security key, or privacy screen is not shown to prevent the browser-side collection described in the allegations.
For now, extension cleanup and separating sensitive browsing are cautious exposure-reduction measures, not confirmed defenses. The underlying technical claims and their legal implications remain distinct from LinkedIn’s stated rationale and from the court’s procedural ruling.
