In my 30-phrase test, I judged 30% of the translations wrong in meaning. That is a result from one small test, not a measure of browser translation overall. Because the language pair, phrase list, scoring rules, browser versions, and replacement engine are not specified here, readers cannot reproduce the result or use it to identify the most accurate browser. The practical lesson is to compare engines on the same text and check meaning—not just fluency—before relying on a translation.

What the 30% result does—and does not—tell you

The result means that, in this particular 30-phrase test, 9 phrases were judged wrong in meaning. It does not establish that browsers generally get 30% of translations wrong. A different language pair, sample, page context, or evaluator could produce a different result.

The details needed to interpret or reproduce this test are not established: the source and target languages, phrase texts, reference translations, browser and operating-system versions, scoring rubric, evaluator qualifications, and which engine replaced the original. Without them, the result is best treated as a warning to verify translations, not as a browser ranking.

Why translation rankings depend on how they are judged

Meaning errors can be harder to assess than whether a sentence sounds natural. A translation may read smoothly while changing a negation, confusing an ambiguous word, or mishandling an idiom, name, or number. Conversely, different wordings can preserve the same meaning.

In a 2021 study, Markus Freitag and coauthors evaluated machine-translation systems for English–German and Chinese–English with professional translators, document context, and an MQM error-analysis framework. Their rankings differed substantially from rankings based on crowd-worker evaluations. The authors summarized the problem this way: “Human evaluation of modern high-quality machine translation systems is a difficult problem, and there is increasing evidence that inadequate evaluation procedures can lead to erroneous conclusions.” The study is methodological context, not a validation or refutation of this 30-phrase result. How to compare browser translations fairly

To learn which option works better for your use, compare translations of the same source text under the same conditions. A useful comparison checks several separate dimensions:

Merriam-Webster's Pocket Spanish-English Dictionary, Newest Edition, (Flexible Paperback)
  • Over 40, 000 entries including English pronunciations given in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
  • A compact guide to essential Spanish and English vocabulary.
  • For ages 13 and up.
  • Bi-directional: English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
  • Meaning: Does the translation preserve the original claim, including negation, uncertainty, and relationships between ideas?
  • Idioms and ambiguity: Does it handle expressions and words whose meaning depends on context?
  • Names and numbers: Are names, dates, quantities, and units preserved correctly?
  • Fluency: Is the result readable? Assess this separately from whether it is accurate.
  • Language pair and context: Use the same source and target languages and, where possible, full sentences or surrounding page text rather than isolated fragments.
  • Browser behavior: Record whether translation was offered and applied as expected, separately from the quality of the resulting text.

Keep the original beside the translation. For important material—such as legal, medical, financial, or safety instructions—verify the meaning with a qualified person or a dependable source in the target language rather than treating browser output as authoritative.

On-device processing is a privacy distinction, not an accuracy score

Mozilla says Firefox webpage translation is processed on your device, with language files downloaded as needed; users can also preinstall full language files. Mozilla contrasts this with Chrome and Edge webpage translation, which it says send text to Google or Microsoft cloud servers. These statements describe the processing arrangements in Mozilla’s support documentation, not the relative accuracy of the browsers or the data flow of every translation feature in every release. Firefox’s technical documentation says its translation models run locally and that it may use English as a pivot when a direct source-to-target model is unavailable. It also describes language identification and the conditions under which Firefox displays a translation icon. A result can therefore depend on language-pair availability as well as the model’s output. Firefox translation technical documentation.

Microsoft describes a separate Edge Translator API for developers: it downloads a task-specific language-pair model on first use and can then operate offline. This API is not a controlled evaluation of Edge’s webpage translation. Microsoft cautions that its task-specific models “can potentially produce translations that are unfair, unreliable, or offensive.” Microsoft Edge Translator API documentation.

When a translation problem may be a setting or page issue

A missing translation offer or an unexpected result does not automatically mean the translation engine misunderstood the text. Edge’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking language preferences and translation exceptions, whether the issue affects one page or a whole profile, page-language markup, extensions, policy, and network or proxy access. In Edge, begin at edge://settings/languages and review the preferred-language list and “Never translate” exceptions. Microsoft Edge translation troubleshooting.

Separate two questions: did the browser detect and translate the page as expected, and did the translated text preserve the meaning? The first is a browser configuration or page-detection issue; the second is an output-quality judgment.

What can be concluded from the engine change

Changing engines after finding meaning errors is a reasonable response for your own workflow, but the change alone does not prove that the replacement is more accurate in general. The engine used after the change and any retest results are not established here, so there is no supported before-and-after comparison to report.

Mozilla’s archived evaluation project compared Firefox’s Bergamot system with Microsoft and Google systems across language pairs and datasets, using evaluation options including SacreBLEU, FLORES, COMET, and BLEU. The repository was archived in October 2023, so it provides methodological background rather than evidence about browser releases in 2026. Mozilla’s archived evaluation project.
