You do not need a magic tab limit. Keep pages for the task you are doing open and easy to find, save useful pages that can wait, and close the ones you no longer need. Browser tab groups help organize active work; built-in memory features can reduce resource use without deciding what belongs in your workflow.
Choose a destination for each tab
For every open page, make one of four decisions: keep it active for the task at hand, group it with related work, save it for later, or close it. This is more useful than aiming for a fixed number: available sources do not establish a universal ideal tab count.
- Active now: You need the page for the task you are doing.
- Grouped: It belongs with other pages for a recognizable project or task.
- Saved for later: It may be useful, but you do not need it open right now.
- Close: You no longer need the page, or can find it again if necessary.
That last distinction matters: an open tab is not the same as a reminder system. If you keep pages open mainly so you will remember them, put them somewhere you can deliberately revisit instead.
Group tabs that support the same task
When several pages are useful for current work, put related tabs together and give the group a clear name, such as “Trip planning” or “Q4 report.” Google Chrome Help documents tab grouping on desktop, and Mozilla says Firefox has built-in tab groups. The exact controls can vary by browser version and platform, so use the current help page for your version if a label or menu differs.

When the tab strip is hard to scan
Firefox also supports vertical tabs, and its tab groups work in the sidebar. Moving the list to a sidebar can make group names easier to scan than a crowded horizontal strip. Mozilla describes the feature and its development in its vertical tabs article. Availability and interface labels may change across versions.

Save pages that are useful but not active
If a page is not part of the current task, move it to a later-reading list, bookmark collection, or saved session rather than leaving it open as a visual reminder. Choose a system you will actually check, and name collections so you can retrieve them by project or subject. A session tool can be useful if you need to restore a set of pages together, but the academic literature that discusses tab-management tools does not establish which extension is best or whether a particular extension’s current privacy practices suit you. Review its current permissions and privacy information before installing one.

Use memory features for slowness, not as a filing system
Organizing tabs and reducing their resource use are different jobs. Sleeping or discarded tabs may ease memory pressure, but they do not decide which pages matter to your work. A tab that has been put to sleep or discarded may need to reload when you return, depending on the browser and page.
- Microsoft Edge Sleeping Tabs: Microsoft describes the feature as pausing inactive pages to release system resources. In a 2022 post, Microsoft reported that a sleeping tab saved “83% of its memory on average.” That is the vendor’s reported average, not an independent comparison or a promise for your device, page, or workload. - Chrome tab discarding: Chrome for Developers describes discarding tabs under low-memory conditions. This memory-management behavior is separate from choosing what to keep open. See Chrome for Developers: Tab Discarding in Chrome.
If your browser feels slow, these features may help manage memory, but the cited material does not establish a specific speed improvement for an individual user. For a clearer workspace, decide what to group, save, or close regardless of whether the browser can suspend inactive tabs.

A repeatable cleanup routine
- Identify the task you are doing. Treat pages needed for that task as candidates to keep active.
- Group related active pages. Use a short label that will still make sense when you return to it.
- Move useful non-active pages out of the tab strip. Save them to a reading list, bookmarks, or a session system you can retrieve later.
- Close pages with no remaining purpose. Do not keep a tab solely because it has been open for a long time or because closing it feels like losing progress.
- Turn to browser memory features if resource use is the issue. Sleeping and discarding address inactive-page memory use, not task organization.
One person’s online question about handling “80+ tabs” is an anecdotal example, not evidence that 80 is a common threshold. The decision rule is the useful part: keep what is active, group what belongs together, save what can wait, and close what you no longer need.
